Abstract

Small talk is defined as an informal dialogue or conversation that does not cover an important topic of conversation. It is a polite conversation about insignificant matters. To date, the small talk function of Arab and Malay communication has not been clearly understood due to a lack of research in this field. This study compares the part of small talk in Arab and Malay communication based on three communication phases: beginning, middle, and closing. The study is descriptive and employs a qualitative approach. The data from the small talk was analyzed using Malinowski's Phatic Communion Theory (1923). The researchers obtained data from an Arabic drama called "أوراق الزمن المر" and a Malay drama called "Nur 2". ATLAS.tiV9 was used to analyze and code small talk expressions. The findings revealed similarities and differences in the small talk function used in each conversation phase between Arab and Malay communication. Regarding the use of small talk in the middle stage of communication, the Arab and Malay communities are similar. Among the differences, the Arab community was discovered to like to interrupt conversations with small talk while having a conversation. In contrast, the Malay community rarely interrupts conversations with small talk while interacting. Overall, this study discovered that the Arab community demonstrated a broader function of small talk than the Malay community. This study will likely benefit both the field of intercultural communication as well as the use of small talk in learning and teaching Arabic as a foreign language.

Abstract

Heritage is a significant tributary of learning and knowledge acquisition in modern communities. Heritage research is of many advantages. It could pave the way to evaluate the past, learn from its mistakes, and benefit from its positive aspects to build the future successfully. This research aims to examine the most important theoretical frameworks that deal with the subject, derive a correct intellectual model in dealing with the heritage text, and highlight the most prominent academic problems and obstacles that prevent the proper dealing with the heritage text in understanding and acquisition. This research uses a comparative approach to assess three intellectual models, extract their key characteristics, and analyze each model, enabling a comprehensive comparison highlighting their most significant features. The results of this study: 1. The most important theoretical frameworks that deal with the heritage of Arabic text are the models of Abed Aljabri, Fahmī Jadʻān, and Ṭāhā ʻAbd al-Raḥmān. 2 The model of Ṭāhā ʻAbd al-Raḥmān is the accurate and comprehensive intellectual framework for dealing with the heritage text. 3. The most prominent academic problems and obstacles that hinder a proper understanding and acquisition of the heritage text are the issue of methodology and objectivity, the challenge of avoiding preconceived notions, and the utilization of pre-existing theoretical and methodological frameworks without considering the unique nature of the text.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the low creative thinking skills of students in applying the grammatical rules of Maf’ul Muthlaq in writing and speaking in Arabic and their low cognitive skills in understanding Maf’ul Muthlaq learning materials. These deficiencies result from the application of grammar teaching strategies limited to giving lectures, explanations, presentations, and examples. None of them allows students to think creatively, which leads to high cognitive skills. This fact is based on the experience of the researchers in teaching Arabic grammar and writing skills courses. This study aims to apply the poem-writing strategy using Canva in the Tathbiq Nahwi Tsanawi course and assess its effectiveness in increasing students' creative thinking skills in using Maf’ul Muthlaq. This study utilizes an experimental method with the one-shot case study design to assess the effectiveness of this strategy in improving the students' creative thinking skills. The results of this study indicate that the implementation of the poem-writing strategy using Canva can improve the students' creative thinking skills in learning Maf’ul Muthlaq to a high level.

Abstract

The use of humor by teachers in classroom interactions can stimulate students and change their attitudes toward learning. The study aims to determine the level of humor applied among Arabic teachers (GBA) and students' speaking anxiety in the Arabic language class at the Government Aided Religious Secondary School (SABK) in Kerian, Perak, Malaysia. A total of 152 out of 258 fourth-form students were selected as a sample by stratified random sampling technique. The research instrument was a questionnaire that was adapted from the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) (Horwitz et al., 1986) and the Students' Evaluation of Teaching Effectiveness Rating Scale (SETERS) (Toland & Ayala, 2005). The study found that the frequency of GBA humor practice was moderately low (M = 2.88, SP = 0.50). At the same time, the frequency of students' speaking anxiety in Arabic is relatively high (M = 3.12, SP = 0.74). Pearson's correlation test shows a significant relationship with weak negative strength (r = -.197, p =.000) between the frequency of GBA humor practice and the level of students' speaking anxiety in Arabic. In conclusion, although the frequency of GBA humor practices is medium-low, most GBA use cheerful humor practices compared to hostile ones. However, the method of GBA humor alone is not enough to reduce the frequency of students' speaking anxiety in Arabic. Therefore, every party, especially teachers, must significantly diversify other effective teaching practices in teaching Arabic to improve students' speaking skills.

Abstract

A common problem in learning Arabic is students' weak ability to speak Arabic, even though they have studied Arabic for a long time. This encourages Arabic language teachers to be smart in choosing and using the right methods. One of the methods in question is the Total Physical Response Method, abbreviated as TPR. This research aims to determine the improvement in students' speaking skills using the Total Physical Response method. This research uses the Classroom Action Research method. Interviews, observation, documentation, and tests carried out data collection. The total population is 27 class VII students at MTs Raudhatul Akmal Batang Kuis. The research results show that students' abilities increase by using the Total Physical Response method, this can be seen from the students' activeness in participating in learning and the Post-test scores are higher than the Pre-test scores. In the pre-cycle only 26.0% of students exceeded the Minimum Completeness Criteria (MCC), in the first cycle, 70.4% of Arabic language teachers, both in schools, madrasas, and Islamic boarding schools, applied the Total Physical Response method so that students' ability to speak the language Arabic is getting better. Students who reached the MCC, and in cycle II 92.6% of students reached the MCC. This shows that the Total Physical Response method is effective in improving students' ability to speak Arabic. The implications of the research provide alternatives to Arabic language teachers, both in schools, madrasas, and Islamic boarding schools, to apply the Total Physical Response method so that students' ability to speak Arabic is getting better.

Abstract

Language learners with a solid international posture are generally more willing to communicate in the foreign language they learn. However, studies on global posture could have been conducted better, especially for Arabic language learners. Therefore, this study aims to examine the level of readiness of students of Arabic studies programs in terms of international posture. This study uses a quantitative design by distributing online questionnaire instruments to 180 final-year students of the bachelor’s degree from three public universities in Malaysia, namely Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), and International Islamic University (UIA). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. The results showed that students in tertiary Arabic Studies programs in Malaysia report that international posture is in the moderate range but relatively lower. Students need to capitalize on all these aspects, which will directly and indirectly contribute to better achievement in learning Arabic.

Abstract

The need for integration in religious sciences reaches the level of necessity in the humanities sciences. As for the integration between religious sciences and humanities, the need for it is necessary due to the returns and benefits it brings to both fields. The intended goals of each field can only be achieved at an individual level through integration. Similarly, the intended purposes of both major areas can only be achieved through integration between them in terms of influence, activation, engagement, and exchange. The Arabic language, learning, and teaching are significant guarantees for fostering this integration. This is due to the essential role of the Arabic language in dealing with religious sciences and its unique ability to provide a common thread between Islamic sciences on the one hand and other related fields on the other hand. Hence, the importance of teaching the Arabic language becomes evident. The Arabic language has become the point of convergence and pivot for all human sciences, underscoring its significance in fostering integration among these disciplines. If Arabic has a significant role in facilitating integration among religious sciences, it has assumed paramount importance in shaping this integration among the human sciences. The results and their discussion: A vital conclusion has been reached by reviewing the statements of scholars and linguists regarding the significance of Arabic for understanding Islamic sciences and by citing the opinions of language experts and their modern branches. This conclusion is that the Arabic language has become the universal bridge for both religious sciences and human sciences. This will become evident through the research.
