Abstract

AbstractGenerative artificial intelligence tools pose a fundamental challenge to traditional technology acceptance models, which were originally designed to evaluate static technologies and largely overlook the relational and interactive dimensions of AI-powered translation tools. This challenge is particularly pronounced in the context of learning linguistically complex languages such as Arabic, where constructs such as trust in output accuracy, perceived risk associated with over-reliance, and perceived intelligence of the tool emerge as primary drivers of adoption. To address this theoretical and methodological gap, the present study aims to develop and establish the content validity of a novel measurement instrument that moves beyond the limitations of conventional technology acceptance models and foregrounds human–AI interaction. Given the inherently fuzzy nature of these emergent constructs, the Fuzzy Delphi Method was employed to elicit systematic consensus from a panel of ten experts in Arabic language pedagogy and educational technology on an initial pool of 60 items. The analysis, applying a threshold of d ≤ 0.20 and a minimum agreement level of 75%, resulted in the retention of 58 items. Beyond offering a validated measurement instrument, this study proposes an alternative and more contextually appropriate theoretical framework for assessing AI adoption in language education, thereby opening new avenues for investigating the complex dynamics between learners and intelligent systems.

Abstract

Most studies on audiovisual translation focus on English-to-Arabic direction and little research has been conducted on the other Arabic-to-English direction. However, digital technology has increased the need for subtitling from Arabic into English as more and more Arabic-language movies and series are being subtitled and shown abroad. Amateur subtitling or fansubbing, which is a translation done by fans for other fans, has gained considerable attention recently. However, few studies have been conducted to investigate the amateur subtitling of Arabic movies and series into English. To address the paucity in this area of research, the present study is an attempt to explore the translation of Arabic idiomatic expressions, focusing on the strategies used by amateur subtitlers to render these expressions into English. Idioms are culture-specific expressions that are challenging for subtitlers. To achieve the study objective, three Egyptian movies translated by amateur subtitlers on YouTube were collected to examine the strategies used by fansubbers to translate Arabic idioms into English. The analysis of the examined data was conducted using Gottlieb’s model (1997) for the subtitling of idioms. The results of the study reveal that amateur subtitlers use a number of strategies to translate Arabic idioms into English. These are correspondence, paraphrase, congruence, omission, reduction and compensation. The analysis shows that the most frequently used strategies are correspondence (36.7%) and paraphrase (33.3%), which constitute 70% of the examples in the current study, while the least used are reduction and compensation, representing 3.3% for each of them. In addition, some of the analyzed subtitles are inappropriate translations of the Arabic idioms, as they are not communicatively translated into the target language.

Abstract

Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) poses well-documented pronunciation challenges for adult non-native speakers due to its rich phonological system, including sounds absent in many learners’ first languages. This study investigates an innovative pedagogical approach: leveraging Qur’anic recitation techniques (Tajwīd) to enhance MSA pronunciation among non-native speakers. A quasi-experimental design was adopted in which one group of learners received traditional pronunciation training while the experimental group received supplementary Tajwīd-based instruction focusing on the precise articulation of Arabic phonemes. Pre- and post-intervention pronunciation assessments (expert ratings and acoustic analyses) indicate that the Tajwīd-trained group achieved significantly greater improvement in segmental pronunciation accuracy and clarity than the control group. Qualitative feedback also suggests heightened learner confidence and awareness of articulation. These findings highlight that integrating Qur’anic recitation rules, which emphasise exact phonetic realisation, into MSA instruction can substantially improve learners’ pronunciation. The paper discusses implications for Arabic as a foreign language pedagogy, noting that this culturally informed technique offers a promising complement to traditional methods, and recommends its incorporation to help learners attain more native-like pronunciation in MSA.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the attributes specific to humans in the lexicon Tahdhib al-Lugha by al-Azharī, as well as to examine the semantic significance of these terms among early and later scholars and to compare between them. It also investigates whether al-Azharī was unique in assigning these particular attributes, and what role these terms play in serving the Arabic language in our present time. The study employs the descriptive-analytical approach, wherein I present the issue as found in al-Tahdhib, then examine it, trace the views of early scholars on it, compare them with those of later scholars and their statements, assess the validity of their opinions, and connect them to the contemporary linguistic reality. The study identified a number of attributes specific to humans in Tahdhib al-Lugha and documented them from their narrators. It also found that the semantic significance of many terms has remained unchanged up to the present time, owing to al-Azharī's precision in transmitting from narrators or his direct oral consultation with the Arabs. Furthermore, the study highlighted the passages in Tahdhib al-Lugha where scholars judged the attributes as being specific, using expressions denoting particularization—such as "exclusively," "not said except," "not described with," and "not used except"—and presented the scholars' views on them, linking them to the statements of later scholars.

Abstract

In the current research, the focus is on exploring some of the most common translation problems encountered by undergraduate translation students when translating Arabic culture-bound terms (henceforth referred to as CBTs) into English. The mentioned terms pose serious obstacles to translation, as they carry complex cultural connotations and cannot be regarded as equivalents in other languages. Based on existing translation theories by scholars such as Peter Newmark and Mona Baker, this study aims to define the nature of the aforementioned problems and the ways undergraduates can solve them. This study is exploratory and serves as a pilot for a larger-scale investigation. Thus, the chosen methodology was of the same nature and included a sample of 30 undergraduate translation students who translated 10 Arabic statements containing culture-bound terms into English. The data collected from the students were analyzed using the thematic analysis framework proposed by Newmark (1988). In particular, he proposed defining categories that include various cultural objects in accordance with Peter Newmark's classification. Then the chosen expressions were assigned to the appropriate categories, while their translation difficulties were identified with respect to the three mentioned aspects: semantic accuracy, syntactic appropriateness, and cultural adequacy. According to the findings from this sample, students face a significant challenge in retaining the cultural meaning when translating culture-bound expressions. They translate them using literal translation or partial equivalence, thus losing meaning and cultural essence. Moreover, the findings show that students prefer foreignization over domestication, with 67% preferring foreignization and 33% domestication. This is mainly because of their lack of understanding of the target culture.

Abstract

This study conducts a philological and juridical analysis of selected terminology in Prophetic Hadiths concerning al-buyūʿ al-manhiyy ʿanhā (Islamic proscribed transactions). It delineates their etymological foundations and subsequent semantic transmutation into sharʿī (juridical) connotations as contextualized within the Hadith corpus, analyzing the relationship between linguistic and the jurisprudential sharʿī and their points of interconnection. The study interrogates hermeneutic divergences among lexicographers and fuqahāʾ (Islamic jurists) concerning the semantic boundaries of these terms, reconciling multiple interpretations where possible and prioritizing the most plausible ones when reconciliation is unattainable. The methodology critically engages classical lughawī (linguistic) commentaries, Sharh al-ḥadīth (Hadith exegeses), and gharīb al-ḥadīth (lexical studies of rare Hadith terminology) to triangulate semantic inferences. Additionally, the study traces the semantic development of these terms or phrases from their linguistic roots to their jurisprudential applications. The research adopts a descriptive-analytical methodology to study and dissect these terms. Key findings include: Linking linguistic and jurisprudential meanings is essential for uncovering a term’s true signification, and Surveying and compiling scholarly opinions can yield decisive insights into a term’s meaning

Abstract

Arabic language education is increasingly transitioning into digital spaces to meet the demands of modern learners and expand accessibility. However, many existing online Arabic learning modules lack structured instructional design, resulting in limited learner engagement and effectiveness. This paper addresses this gap by proposing a systematic approach for developing an Arabic-language online learning module using the ADDIE instructional design model, which comprises five phases: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The study presents a conceptual application of each ADDIE phase tailored to Arabic language instruction, incorporating needs analysis, learning objectives, content creation, digital tools, and formative assessments. The proposed design framework is expected to result in a more coherent, interactive, and learner-centered module that improves student outcomes in language acquisition. This research contributes to Arabic language pedagogy by offering a replicable model for educators and designers to develop high-quality digital learning materials aligned with pedagogical and technological best practices.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to analyze the efficacy of the Fun Easy Learn app in enhancing seventh-graders' command of the Arabic lexicon (mufradat). The study used a one-group pretest-posttest design, which is a quasi-experimental approach. There were 27 participants, drawn at random from a pool of 100 pupils. Vocabulary tests were given both before and after the therapy to gather data. The three topics addressed by the instruments were animals, jobs, and body parts. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS version 31.0. This included tests for normality and homogeneity, as well as one-way ANOVA and paired-samples t-tests for hypothesis testing. After using the Fun Easy Learn app, pupils' vocabulary skills significantly improved, according to the findings. Scores improved from an average of 32.04 on the pretest to 67.78 on the posttest. At a significance threshold of 0.000 (p < 0.05), the paired-samples t-test yielded a t-value of -6.819, indicating a statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores. Based on these results, it's clear that the Fun Easy Learn app helps students learn Arabic words faster. Students were more invested, enthusiastic, and motivated to study Arabic because of the app's interactive elements, including images, audio pronunciation, and educational activities. We may conclude that the Fun Easy Learn app is a useful tool for madrasah students to increase their Arabic vocabulary.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine how well students at UIN STS Jambi and UIN Mataram have learned Arabic language (mufradat) via the use of the TikTok app. The main focus of this research is to identify differences in the level of usefulness, students’ responses, and vocabulary improvement outcomes between the two institutions. The research employs a descriptive quantitative approach, using a Likert-scale questionnaire administered to 60 respondents (30 students from each university). The collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics in the form of percentages and mean scores to examine the comparative results. The findings reveal a significant difference in effectiveness between the two universities. UIN STS Jambi obtained 90% in the very effective category, while UIN Mataram obtained 85% in the effective category. These results indicate that students at UIN STS Jambi utilize TikTok more consistently and purposefully for vocabulary learning, whereas students at UIN Mataram demonstrate positive yet less optimal outcomes due to more situational usage. This conclusion confirms that TikTok does not only provide a positive impact in general but also displays varying results based on institutional context, usage patterns, and learning environments. Therefore, TikTok is considered feasible and recommended as a technology-based learning medium, particularly for improving Arabic vocabulary mastery in Islamic higher education settings.

Abstract

Arabic language learning in non-native settings often encounters a disconnection between linguistic proficiency and socio-cultural contexts, leading to mother-tongue interference in communication. This study aims to analyze the integration of cultural competence (al-kifâyah al-tsaqâfiyyah) into Arabic pedagogy to bridge this gap across six State Islamic Higher Education Institutions (PTAIN) in Java. Utilizing a multi-site comparative qualitative approach and SWOT analysis, the research evaluates environment-based language and culture learning models. Findings indicate that language acquisition effectiveness depends significantly on environmental engineering that synergizes formal and informal aspects while internalizing native patterns of thinking (anmâth al-tafkîr) and expression (anmâth al-ta’bir). Integrating Arabic-Islamic cultural content into the curriculum and syllabus through an integrated system is proven to enhance communicative skills and eliminate psychological barriers for students. This study recommends reformulating learning designs that position culture as a vital instrument in achieving authentic and functional language proficiency.
