Abstract

A communication barrier is anything that comes in the way of receiving and understanding messages that one sends to another to convey his ideas, thoughts, or any other kind of information. These various barriers of communication block or interfere with the message that someone is trying to send. This paper aims to identify communication barriers occurring during interview sessions conducted by students with Arab tourists, and to analyze the situation that led to the communication barrier. Based on Effendy (2009) and Rani (2016), the research divided the communication barriers into four categories: cultural barrier, language barrier, environmental barrier, and attitude barrier. This paper applies a qualitative method, which its instrument is content analysis by analyzing 20 interview videos to study the communication barriers happening among the students and the Arab tourists. The research analysis instrument used is document analysis based on the checklist made for identifying the communication barriers. The researcher observed each scene to identify communication barriers that happened between them, while document analysis was applied to analyze the situation that triggered the communication barriers. Language barrier is the most recorded barrier for 87 times, with the lack of vocabulary found as the main issue among the students while conducting the interview with the Arab tourist.

Abstract

Palestinian resistance represents one of the central themes in contemporary Arab literature, where poetry serves as a powerful medium for articulating the hardships, hopes and defiance of an oppressed and displaced people. Ayman al-Atoom stands among the notable contemporary Arab poets whose works vividly expose the social and political realities of the Arab world. This study offers a critical analysis of Palestinian resistance narratives in selected poems of the Jordanian poet, examining both their literary aesthetics and political consciousness. Employing descriptive and analytical methods, the research explores how al-Atoom’s poetic language, imagery and symbolism construct a discourse of resistance. The findings reveal that his poetry functions as a reflective mirror of the Palestinian experience, highlighting themes of pain, suffering, tragedy, resilience and revolution. Moreover, the study underscores the poet’s view that the liberation of Palestine is a collective responsibility of the entire Muslim ummah, presenting the Palestinian cause not merely as a regional or national concern, but as a universal human tragedy. The study concludes that al-Atoom’s integration of aesthetic expression and political awareness contributes significantly to contemporary resistance literature and enriches the understanding of Palestine’s ongoing struggle.

Abstract

The rhetorical significance that this research seeks to uncover lies in the universal law (al-Qānūn al-Kullī) that Al-Sijilmāsī aimed to establish within the genre of conciseness (al-Ījāz). This principle serves as the general governing rule and the fundamental backbone of this genre. It represents a systematic trend governing the various rhetorical sub-types branching from the genre of conciseness, which share common rhetorical characteristics qualifying them to fall under a single 'High Genre' (Jins 'Ālī).In this study, we examine the rhetorical meaning within this genre, into which Al-Sijilmāsī categorized a set of Arabic rhetorical devices, without claiming to have exhausted all possible styles. His primary objective was to demonstrate the general law of rhetorical meaning rather than to provide an exhaustive inventory of styles. The research argues that the High Genre of conciseness represents a cornerstone that sheds light on a vital aspect of general rhetorical meaning, such as the duality of expression and meaning (al-lafẓ wa-al-ma‘nā) that governed this genre.

Abstract

The implementation of Arabic proficiency testing in Indonesian Islamic State Universities presents several challenges and opportunities for improving students’ language proficiency. This study explores the experiences of students and educators in navigating the Arabic proficiency tests and examines the implications for institutional and pedagogical practices. The study focuses on three major challenges in the implementation of testing policy: (1) inconsistency in testing standards across institutions, (2) misalignment between the test content and the Arabic curriculum, and (3) inadequate institutional support for student test preparation. This study adopts a qualitative case study design of Arabic proficiency testing at the State Islamic Institute of Parepare (IAIN Parepare). Data were collected through policy analysis, test results, and interviews with students from various academic programs.  The findings indicate that students often perceive the test as difficult due to unfamiliar test formats and content that exceeds the curricular scope. Moreover, educators struggle to integrate test-oriented skills into regular instruction due to the lack of clear institutional guidelines. The analysis reveals that, while the tests play a critical role in assessing students’ language skills, these challenges hinder the policy's effectiveness. Despite these challenges, the study offers recommendations for improving the standardization of testing procedures, aligning the curriculum more closely with the tests, and enhancing institutional support to prepare students better. Addressing these issues will help create more equitable and accurate assessments of Arabic proficiency across all institutions.
