Abstract

This research aims to describe the representation tendencies of Netflix in the documentary film "Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee, and Jessica Wongso." The study applies a qualitative descriptive research method using the Critical Discourse Analysis approach by Fairclough. The data source for this research is the narrative of the documentary film "Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee, and Jessica Wongso" produced by Netflix. The analysis of description results of agency reveal that the agents mentioned by the narrator are Cyanide 37%, Netflix 31%, authorities 13%, Jessica 13%, and All Indonesian people 6%. Thus, the agents mentioned by the narrator in the film "Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee, and Jessica Wongso." Regarding the analysis of narrator data using the theory of transitivity processes, it shows that the most dominant is Pr. Verbal at 24%, followed by Pr. Mental at 23%, and Pr. Material at 23%. The third position is Pr. Existential at 18%, and the lowest is Pr. Behavioural at 12%. Therefore, in the analysis of the narrator's narrative, it is found that both mental and material processes have equal percentages, each at 32%. This analysis identifies that the narrator comprehensively. The interpretation found that the narrator uses material and verbal processes to convey the efforts and hard work of the production team in conducting interviews with all the sources involved in this case. The narrator also predominantly uses mental processes because the narrator conveys and convinces the public about the facts of cyanide unknown to the public. The narrator convinces the public that the knowledge about cyanide with facts and evidence in Mirna's case cannot be considered the cause of Mirna's death. The explanation Netflix's efforts to bring in several narrators, even with the absence of some key narrators, become a question mark. Jessica, as a suspect in Mirna's death case, is hard to find. Netflix's belief is that Mirna's death is not because of cyanide. Netflix also has an interest in gaining significant profit from making this film, as evidenced by the trailer being watched by as many as 44 million viewers, and the documentary becoming one of the most popular documentaries produced by Netflix.

Abstract

This study employs literary ecocriticism theory to examine elements of environmental and social resistance in Wiji Thukul’s poetry. Wiji Thukul is a poet from the '98 generation, known for his provocative and vibrant works. The connection between literary works and elements of environmental and social resistance is prevalent in Wiji Thukul's poetry. Literary ecocriticism is applied to analyze his poetry using a qualitative descriptive method. The ecocritical analysis of Wiji Thukul’s poetry offers insights into the ecological issues related to environmental and social resistance reflected in his poems. Seven of his poems will be analyzed in this study: Leuwigajah, Bunga dan Tembok, Nyanyian Akar Rumput, Sajak Anak-Anak, Nyanyian Tanah Ibu, Di Bawah Selimut Kedamaian Palsu, and Sajak Tikar Plastik - Tikar Pandan. The results indicate that Wiji Thukul’s poems, when analyzed through literary ecocriticism, reveal elements of environmental and social resistance that serve as a critique of the government and as a means of raising public awareness about the deteriorating environmental conditions.

Abstract

The study is to find out the potential opportunity to offer and possible challenges to face in implementing technology in the EFL classrooms in low-tech community such as rural Bangladesh. The data was collected from seven EFL teachers of rural middle schools of rural Bangladesh through semi-structured interviews. A purposive sampling was done to select the interviewees. The semi-structured interview information was explained for an interpretive qualitative study which used thematic analysis technique to identify the opportunities and challenges that technology can offer in the development of EFL teaching and learning in rural Bangladesh. The study is significant because technology integration comes with the promises of a better learning opportunity in a low-tech, low-resourced community, and problems to use right kind of technology in right way. Teachers’ opinions in this regard are instrumental because they the frontliners in the way of bringing a change in EFL learning through technology integration. Knowing the challenges and their proposed solutions from the perspectives of the teachers is the other side of the coin equally important to be considered.   The Study finds that technology integration in EFL learning bears the potential to offer a better teaching learning environment despite some of the challenges in rural EFL classrooms in Bangladesh.

Abstract

This study examines code-switching among college students in Makassar, Indonesia. Code-switching, defined as the practice of alternating between two or more languages in a single conversation, is a common phenomenon in bilingual and multilingual communities. With the increasing influence of English in Indonesian education, students frequently switch between Indonesian and English. This research aims to identify the types of code-switching, understand its functions, and explore the reasons behind this linguistic behavior among college students. Data were gathered through recorded conversations and semi-structured interviews with 50 participants from different universities in Makassar. The results show that intra-sentential code-switching is the most prevalent, and the practice is influenced by social context, language proficiency, and exposure to digital media. This study provides significant insights into the bilingual language practices of college students in Makassar, specifically highlighting how code-switching serves as a dynamic tool for social interaction, identity negotiation, and academic expression. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of bilingual practices in Southeast Asia and provide practical insights for educators, suggesting that embracing multilingualism in academic contexts can create more inclusive and effective learning environments.

Abstract

In multilingual settings, speakers frequently move between codes and languages during their frequent social interactions. Any circumstance in which speakers flip between accepted codes is now considered code-switching. Several studies have assessed and compared aspects of code-switching in EFL classrooms focusing on the perception of the teachers in a multilingual context. However limited studies examined the use of code-switching in EFL classrooms like Rwanda where three languages are officially used, and one native language is still the most dominant for all people. The current study uses qualitative methods to examine how teachers perceive different aspects of code-switching in multilingual classrooms to address the following questions: what types of code-switching do both teachers and students use in the classrooms and how do they perceive that phenomenon? The research participants in the interview were nine senior teachers from Groupe Scolaire Nyamirama and the data was collected by coding. The findings from the interview demonstrate that both intra-sentential and inter-sentential functions of code-switching are sometimes used to manage the language minority in the classroom, remaining united with the students, and the language learners' lack of proficiency. This study provides future researchers with suggestions and educational implications for EFL/ESL teachers.

Abstract

Motivation in language learning is a critical area of study since motivation greatly impacts second language acquisition. Socio-Educational Model theory explains motivation to learn a second language in two main types: integrative and instrumental motivation. Many studies have explored motivation in language learning, but such studies are deficient in the case of Rwandan EFL learners. This study analyses the motivational types that inspire students during learning and investigates the motivation factors for EFL learning. This descriptive study, which involves a class from a Rwandan high school of Groupe Scolaire Nyamirama, uses both a qualitative and quantitative design. The information was gathered using open-ended questionnaires and closed-ended questionnaires. The results indicated that instrumental and integrative motivation significantly influences students’ EFL learning process. However, it showed that instrumental motivation was major in EFL learning. Additionally, according to the data, twelve motivational factors were identified from students and ten from teachers regarding teaching strategies and teacher-student interactions, all which impact students during the learning process. However, because motivational variables and motivational types rely on context, it is recommended that a study on this topic be conducted in a different setting.

Abstract

During police interrogations, accused persons flout or violate conversational maxims to seek a soft landing or escape the law's wrath. Hence, this study evaluates the frequency at which Grice's Maxims were violated during suspects' interrogations. The study identifies these violations based on four maxims: quality, quantity, manner, and relation/relevance results of this study indicate that accused individuals often violate the maxim of quantity to create distractions and divert attention from incriminating evidence during police investigations. The results also show that accused persons violate the maxim of manner by making obscured statements to reduce tension during interrogations. This paper concludes that in suspects' interrogations, accused persons use flouting or violation of Grice's Maxims as communicative tools to escape the punishment(s) apportioned for crime(s) that they commit directly or indirectly.

Abstract

There are three results of this research, (a) the role of Borobudur as a symbol, Borobudur Temple is not only a Buddhist religious site but also a cultural symbol that connects spiritual values with the local culture of Javanese society. Borobudur has a broader meaning in a socio-cultural context, as a center of cultural identity that unites religion and local traditions, (b) harmony of the Nyadran and Sedekah Bumi traditions with the symbolic meaning of Borobudur. The Nyadran and Sedekah Bumi traditions are in harmony with the symbolic values of Borobudur which are reflected in the relationship between humans, nature and ancestors. Nyadran as a ritual of respect for ancestors contains moral and spiritual values that are in line with Buddhist teachings about karma and enlightenment. Likewise, Sedekah Bumi expresses gratitude towards nature, reflecting awareness of the importance of maintaining balance between humans and the environment. (c) harmonious integration between Buddhists, Buddhists and local culture. The tradition of Nyadran and Sedekah Bumi carried out by Buddhists in Central Java shows a harmonious integration between Buddhist teachings and local culture, thus making Borobudur a symbol of social cohesion and diversity. These two traditions have experienced cultural adaptation to become post-traditions. namely maintaining the tradition of Nyadran and Sedekah Bumi to the earth in the modern era accompanied by entertainment, but still maintaining its core meaning
