Abstract

A positive image is very necessary for a company to promote its values and be accepted in society. However, if the positive image narrated is contrary to reality, then the case can be categorized as green-washing, if it concerns the environment, and woke-washing, if it concerns social welfare. Furthermore, literary works as a mirror of society have room to represent green-washing and woke-washing, one of which is in the novel How Beautiful We Were by Mbue. In the novel, green-washing and woke-washing are not just image manipulation for profit but also play a major role in perpetuating eco-apartheid by the American oil company called Pexton which occurred in the village of Kosawa. Based on this case, this research aimed to rigorously analyze the extent of eco-apartheid inflicted upon the affected community. Furthermore, it also attempt to critically uncover the mechanism that not only mask corporate exploitation but also actively reinforce eco-apartheid. Moreover, to achieve this goal, this research uses descriptive qualitative and the concept of levels of marginalization of eco-apartheid, green-washing, and woke-washing.  This study used close reading to systematically identify words, phrases, and sentences that revealed different levels of eco-apartheid, green-washing, and woke-washing. The collected data was then analyzed to uncover the extent and deeper mechanisms that allow eco-apartheid to persist based on the theories used. This research finds that the level of marginalization in eco-apartheid has reached the third level. Then, eco-apartheid is maintained through a green-washing mechanism, namely by creating the illusion of concern for environmental pollution and clean water, and a woke-washing mechanism, namely by promoting Pexton's concern for social welfare, offering job opportunities, compensation money and scholarships.

Abstract

Kya Kya, known as Kembang Jepun, has transitioned from a predominantly Chinese cultural hub to a diverse economic and social space reflecting Indonesia's multicultural identity. Using data collected from 130 signs across the district, combined with interview, this research examines language usage categorized as monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual, shedding light on the motives behind language selection. As a result, Indonesian emerges as the dominant language across all categories, reflecting its role as the national language. However, other languages such as Chinese, English, Dutch, and Javanese contribute to the district's linguistic diversity. Bilingual signage highlights the coexistence of globalization and the enduring presence of the Chinese community, while multilingual signs underline the area's multicultural identity. This study demonstrates how language in public spaces reflects Kya Kya’s evolving identity, shaped by historical legacies, cultural interactions, and social transformations. The findings provide valuable insights into the linguistic landscape of Surabaya and its relevance to broader discussions on language, culture, and urban identity in Indonesia.

Abstract

World War II was a major event that occurred in the past that had many impacts on human life, both in terms of economy, social, and culture. In addition, World War II also had an impact on literary works. Many writers criticized and expressed their emotions through literary works. One of them is the novel An English Murder by Cyril Hare which is set in the post-World War II era. This study aims to analyze how the novel An English Murder reflects what happened in Britain at that time using a qualitative descriptive method. Using Lucien Goldmann's theory of human facts, which emphasizes that literary works relate to the social structures that shape them, this study concludes that the novel An English Murder clearly depicts the social conditions in England after World War II. In addition, the research also shows that although An English Murder is a work of detective fiction, it manages to portray a broad social and political reality, as well as provide an overview of the problems that occurred in post-World War II Britain.

Terima Kasih Sudah Bertahan is a song by Ghea Indrawari that narrates an emotional journey and personal experiences in facing life’s challenges. This study aims to analyze the representation of personal resilience in the song through three aspects: commitment, control, and challenge, using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The research data includes verbal texts (song lyrics) and nonverbal texts (visuals from the music video) sourced from the YouTube channel HITS Records – Music Video Terima Kasih Sudah Bertahan. Data collection techniques involved listening, note-taking, and screenshot methods. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, focusing more on meaning-making than generalization. The findings reveal that the representation of personal resilience in this song is portrayed through a strong commitment to endure and not give up, effective self-control in facing difficulties, and challenges faced with courage and determination.

Abstract

This study explores the concept of representation, semiotics, and visual communication through the lens of fingerprint painting as a unique form of abstract art. Drawing on theories from Stuart Hall, John Fiske, Ferdinand de Saussure, Roland Barthes, and Charles Sanders Peirce, the research examines how meaning is constructed through signs, symbols, and artistic expression. Representation is understood as a process of encoding and decoding meaning, where language and media shape social perceptions. Semiotics, as introduced by Saussure and expanded by Barthes and Peirce, provides a framework for analyzing how signs function in communication and artistic expression. Fingerprint painting is investigated as a visual language that conveys identity, tradition, and cultural symbolism. This research applies Peirce’s semiotic theory to analyze fingerprint painting as a system of signs, incorporating icons, indices, and symbols. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, focusing on audiovisual data from the documentary Di Balik Lukisan Sidik Jari, supported by literature reviews and media analysis. Data collection techniques include observation, listening, and note-taking to interpret verbal and nonverbal elements within the documentary. Findings indicate that fingerprint painting serves as more than an aesthetic medium; it is a symbolic representation of cultural identity, tradition, and personal expression. Through semiotic analysis, the research highlights how fingerprints, as unique individual markers, contribute to the authenticity of artistic creation. This study provides insight into the role of representation in art and the broader implications of semiotic analysis in visual culture.

Abstract

In higher education context, many students encounter considerable difficulties in improving their literacy skills, which limits their ability to fully engage with course material and reach their academic potential. This study aims to explore how the use of intellectual diaries have significant influence in enhancing the literacy skills of university students enrolled in an English prose course. This study employed a qualitative research design with a case study approach focusing on in-depth examination of a single class of students in their natural classroom setting. The participants in this study were 34 undergraduate students enrolled in an English prose course at a state university located in Makassar city, Indonesia. Data were collected through three primary instruments: intellectual diaries, semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations. Data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis with six steps implementation stages. The findings revealed four key themes in dealing with students’ intellectual diary: enhanced critical thinking, improved reading comprehension and analytical abilities, increased self-reflection and metacognitive awareness, and greater engagement with course material. These findings suggest that intellectual diaries can be a valuable tool for promoting literacy development in higher education. The study's findings contribute to the existing body of knowledge on literacy education by providing empirical evidence of the benefits of intellectual diaries in an English prose course context.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze speech acts in the social context of the film Honeymoonish by Elie El Semaan using the theoretical framework of pragmatics according to John Austin. Speech acts are categorized into three types: locution, illocution, and perlocution. Through a qualitative approach, this research identifies how dialogues in the film reflect social interactions among characters and the meanings contained within them. Data is obtained through the analysis of key scenes that highlight verbal and non-verbal communication. The results of the study show that speech acts in this film not only function as communication tools but also as a medium to express emotions, conflicts, and relevant social values. Additionally, the study highlights the role of context in shaping the interpretation of speech acts, as well as the ways in which power dynamics and social hierarchies influence character interactions. By examining the intricacies of language use in Honeymoonish, this research underscores the importance of pragmatics in understanding the subtleties of human communication. These findings are expected to contribute to the study of pragmatics and film analysis, as well as enrich the understanding of social dynamics in the context of contemporary cinema.
