Abstract

Enola Holmes and Sherlock Holmes produce different shows within the same genre. This research aims to discover the differences in case-solving techniques between Enola and Sherlock Holmes. The appropriate method for this research is qualitative using literary criticism. The researcher only focused on the films and reference sources to find out the case-solving patterns and the influence of color in Enola Holmes and Sherlock Holmes. The findings are that Enola uses more case-solving techniques, such as wordplay and intuition, and prioritizes feelings. The colors displayed also look more cheerful with a combination of bright colors. Whereas, Sherlock uses more deductive abilities with a focus on goals without involving his feelings by using dark colors that make him look serious and dark. In his every action, there is no hesitation at all. This research proves the difference between Sherlock and Enola in solving cases and the fact that colors are not just aesthetics but can also support the narrative, which then creates a deeper message and atmosphere.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the challenge of translating elliptic particles in the Holy Qurʼān, a subtle linguistic feature often overlooked by translators due to its implicit nature. Elliptic particles pose significant challenges for translators, given that they are not always immediately apparent and require deep reading of Qurʼānic exegeses. Although there are many studies on Qurʼānic ellipsis, the specific focus on elliptic particles remains scarce. The present paper fills this gap by examining how elliptic particles are rendered in selected English translations of selected verses and evaluating the strategies employed in terms of accuracy and clarity. Through qualitative content analysis and comparative evaluation of three key English translations of twelve selected verses, the study findings revealed that while literal translation was predominantly used and often ensured precise and comprehensible renditions, it in a few cases resulted in misconceptions. In contrast, explicitation strategy offers enhanced clarity and readability. These findings thus contribute to the field of translation studies by underlining the need for a balance between fidelity to the original text and accessibility of the translation. The findings also suggest that translation strategies must carefully account for both linguistic precision and reader comprehension to ensure accurate delivery of the Qurʼānic message.

Abstract

Teachers have the power to change their students' lives for the better; therefore, teachers should be armed with some skills to become more effective and successful ones.  However, Teachers' Immunity (TI) is defined as a robust armoring system one with high-intensity threats and allows teachers to maintain professional equilibrium and instructional effectiveness.  Thus, the present study aimed at examining the probable association between EFL teachers' immunity as a booster for Iraqi EFL teacher’s energy. To this end, two scales of Teacher Immunity Questionnaire (TIQ) and Teacher Energy Questionnaire (TEQ) administered among 100 Iraqi EFL teachers comprising of 28 females and 72 males. Besides, SPSS program 26 and Pearson Correlation was utilized to analyze data. It sounds that concerning the provided definitions of both scales plus the findings, the more immune the EFL teachers are, the more energized they are in handling their job satisfactorily. Moreover, the significant role of language teacher immunity as predictor of EFL teachers was discovered throughout this study and significant and meaningful relationship between EFL teachers' immunity as a booster of energy was found using Pearson correlation (Sig=0.000). The implications of the present study may shed new light on the significance of incorporating teacher immunity approach into teacher development programs as a core subject as well as teacher energizer.

Abstract

This research aims to explore how the Small Moments strategy can increase student involvement in the English language learning process, especially in writing skills. The research method used is a case study in a junior high school (SMP), where students are grouped into several groups and then each group applies the Small Moments strategy. Data was collected through observation, interviews, and analysis of students' writing before and after the intervention. The results showed that students who engaged in the Small Moments strategy showed significant increases in their motivation, creativity and writing abilities. Students are more active in sharing personal experiences and relating these experiences to the writing context, which in turn increases their sense of ownership of the work produced. These findings indicate that implementing the Small Moments strategy is not only effective in improving writing skills, but can also create a more inclusive and interesting learning environment. This research recommends implementing similar strategies in teaching English and other subjects to increase student engagement.

Abstract

This research aims to contribute to the analysis of feminism and patriarchal culture related to the objectification of women's bodies and their resistance in the memoir My Body released in 2021 and written by Emily Ratajkowski. The memoir My Body (2021) illustrates that patriarchal culture grows and develops in people's lives as shown by the dominance of men over women in various aspects of life which causes women's bodies to be objectified so that they experience limited access in various fields of life. The analysis in this study includes the depiction of patriarchal culture and objectification of women's bodies in the memoir My Body (2021) and the resistance to patriarchal culture carried out by female characters in the memoir My Body (2021). In conducting the analysis, the researcher used the literary criticism method by using the theory of feminism from Helene Cixous' thoughts to analyse feminism related to the culture of objectification of women's bodies and their resistance. The results of this study found 4 data in the form of narratives. This research describes body objectification as a culture that limits women that makes women disadvantaged, the culture depicts women as figures who depend on male superiority, and as objects of male lust. In their resistance, women reject norms by writing. Women also resist the culture of objectification by being independent from male roles, independent in defending themselves, and independent in making life decisions. Women are also portrayed as rebelling against male control. This research makes an answer to Helene Cixous' theory of "why women should write" because they have to "fight" the norms and culture that limit and harm women themselves and only fellow women understand how to be in that position.

Abstract

This study examines the Sowan tradition on Makeang Island, South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province. This tradition is often practiced during Ramadan and aims to help children get used to fasting from an early age. The study will address two questions, the first being: what is the form of the Sowan tradition practiced by the Makeang Luar people? This question also serves as a prophetic effort to counter the current trend in local cultures, which is the gradual decline leading to extinction. A comprehensive description of this tradition not only illustrates how its processes and characteristics are carried out but also serves as a means of documentation that can be preserved as the collective memory of the Makeang Luar community. Additionally, it examines how the Makeang Luar people utilize the wisdom inherent in this tradition to educate children's character from an early age. The research employed a qualitative method using an analytical descriptive approach. This approach was selected because it involved participant observation, in-depth interviews, and literature reviews. Utilizing this methodology allowed the study to gather qualitative data, which was systematically presented based on the facts collected from the field. The findings illustrated how the tradition was practiced, the materials required, and the various meanings and wisdom embedded within it. In terms of meaning, the tradition encompasses several connotations, including resilience, integrity, and maturity. Additionally, regarding local wisdom, the Sowan tradition plays a significant role in shaping children's character from an early age. This character is reflected in their obedience in performing religious duties.

Abstract

The search for identity is commonly experienced in adolescent development and includes various aspects such as spirituality and the self. However, in this process, an individual might struggle to adjust between personal beliefs and social norms. The novel Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume represents the struggles experienced by adolescents amidst social pressures and personal desires, as depicted through the main character, Margaret. This research applies literary criticism to discuss Margaret's journey in shaping her spiritual identity and anxiety about her physical development using Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity. Using a mimetic approach, the novel reflects social dynamics in 1970s America, including social pressures on gender roles and shifting patterns of religiosity. The results of this study show that Margaret's identity is formed through her interactions with society, influences from her family, and personal experiences. This research emphasizes that identity search is a dynamic process influenced by various internal and external factors.

The Gorontalo people are one of the tribal groups in Indonesia located on the island of Sulawesi, which has language and cultural differences with other Indonesian tribes. This study uses the Discourse Completion Task (DCT) as the data collection technique, which is an elicitation method in the form of a questionnaire equipped with situational descriptions to facilitate completion. The questionnaire, containing nine different situations designed to trigger criticism. The DCT was distributed to 45 Gorontalo people who have different backgrounds. The results of the data analysis in this study show that in conveying criticism, the Gorontalo community employed the forms of politeness strategies include bald-on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record. Furthermore, this community tends to use politeness strategies that are influenced by two factors: the situational context and the social context. The situational context refers to the specific situation that triggers criticism. Meanwhile, the social context refers to the difference in social class between speakers and interlocutors, where the older/higher the position, the more polite the language used.

Abstract

Technology-based language learning, particularly Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL), is increasingly utilized to support autonomous learning. However, limited research has explored how Duolingo contributes to metacognitive awareness and learning autonomy among non-English major students in Indonesia. This study aims to analyse the impact of Duolingo on these two variables and to explore the relationship between them. Using a mixed-methods approach with a quasi-experimental design, 56 non-English major students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Buton participated in the study. Quantitative data were analysed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Spearman Rank correlation, while qualitative data were examined through thematic analysis. The Wilcoxon test results indicated a significant increase in metacognitive awareness (p < 0.001) and learning autonomy (p < 0.001), with a strong positive correlation between them (r = 0.72, p < 0.001). Interviews revealed that Duolingo’s gamification features, such as streaks and leaderboards, helped students become more aware of their learning strategies and more independent in their learning process. This study demonstrates that Duolingo not only facilitates language learning but also enhances students' autonomy and metacognitive awareness.
