Abstract

This article examines critical literacy practices carried out by the informal education community thoughtfully and potentially so that they can be applied to developing the school literacy movement program. Statistically, 95.66% of Indonesia's population can read, but on the other hand, the reading literacy score in the PISA study is still below average. So far, there have been different perspectives regarding literacy as a reading activity and literacy as an activity to process information. These differences result in different interpretations and attitudes in processing information in a text. Critical literacy relates reading analysis skills to the realities faced by students. This study aimed to find patterns of critical literacy carried out by the Ngampar Boekoe community and Jamaah Maiyah Al Manhal about the inherent development of the school literacy movement program. The research method used is qualitative with an auto-ethnographic approach. The data comes from the researcher's personal experience, observation, in-depth interviews and artefacts. Data analysis uses triangulation with a bottom-up pattern to find critical literacy formulas and can be reflected in the school literacy movement program. The results found are in the form of alternative formulations which consist of critical material that can develop students' critical power, dialectical methods filled with a sense of trust, and quality-based evaluation using response journal instruments and written works. The results of this study can be used as policy-making considerations for relevant stakeholders to build the qualifications of a literate society.

Abstract

In the realm of education, fostering a moderate character is closely tied to the selection of effective strategies. The precision in executing these strategies plays a crucial role in instilling values successfully. The article aims to assess the effectiveness of group-based intelligent character education services (PKC-KO) in improving madrasah students' awareness of religious moderation. The study utilizes an experimental design with a Non-Equivalent Control Group, focusing on Class X students from Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 EastLampung, using Purposive Sampling. A Likert scale-based assessment is employed, and the data is analyzed using statistical tools such as the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov 2 Independent Samples with the assistance of SPSS. Overall, the research findings reveal the success of group-based intelligent character education programs in enhancing madrasah students' awareness of religious moderation. There is a notable disparity in the students' awareness of religious moderation before and after receiving PKC-KO in the experimental group. In contrast, the control group, without such educational intervention, did not experience a significant increase in awareness. The study underscores that PKC-KO imparts principles of religious moderation, encouraging students to maintain a balanced perspective, avoid extremism, practice tolerance towards diverse religious backgrounds, dispel stereotypes, develop positive interpersonal skills, and contribute to societal peace by respecting religious distinctions. This research holds educational implications, emphasizing the potential of PKC-KO-based programs for cultivating awareness of religious moderation among madrasah students. The study suggests that implementing PKC-KO can significantly impact students' perspectives on religious moderation, promoting a more harmonious and tolerant society.

Abstract

A tourism route is a sequence of tourist attractions visited. Students are familiar with tour activities and often plan tourism routes to visit several tourist attractions. Students' experience and knowledge about tourism routes can be used as a context for teaching the rule of product. Therefore, this research aims to design a learning trajectory for the rule of product using the Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI) approach in the Kerinci nature tourism route context. The research method used is design research with a validation study type, which consists of three stages: preparation and design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. The subjects involved in this research were 11 third-semester mathematics education students at a university in Jambi, Indonesia. The instruments include learning video recordings, student work results, field notes, and test sheets. The research results show that learning trajectories designed in the context of tourism routes can help students discover, understand, and use the rule of product in solving relevant mathematical problems. The learning tracjectory consists of four activities: making a list of Kerinci tourist attractions, determining the location of several tourist attractions on a sketch map, arranging tourist attractions in tourism routes, and solving problems regarding possible tourism routes. This research shows that the designed learning trajectory is vital in helping students discover and understand the rule of product and apply them to solving relevant problems.

Abstract

Group work (GW) is one of the strategies teachers employ to organize students and let them participate in collaborative tasks to achieve their learning-centered goals. The formation of single-gender (SG) and mixed-gender (MG) groups cannot be avoided in GW.  Thus, this research aimed to explore EFL (English Foreign Language) students’ lived experiences working in SG and MG groups. A qualitative study using a phenomenological approach was conducted. The data were collected from three rounds of semi-structured interviews with eight participants. They were selected through three steps of online screening with some criteria. The research was conducted at one of the state universities in East Java, Indonesia. Van Kaam’s method, modified by Moustakas (1994), was used to analyze the data. This research revealed two main results: positive and negative experiences reported by students in both the SG and MG groups. In the SG group, the themes include effective communication, postponed GW tasks, and a better environment. In contrast, in the MG group, the themes encompass ineffective communication, solid members, and ineffective time management. In short, two positive and one negative theme are mentioned in SG groups, while one positive and two negative themes emerge in MG groups. As a result, the core aspects revealed include communication, individual contributions and responsibility, and productivity and efficiency while working in groups. This present research adds more comprehensive theories of GW related to students' gender and helps students and teachers be more aware of GW related to gender aspects.

Abstract

This study evaluates the implementation of the Independent Curriculum in West Aceh District and its significant implications for local education policies. Through comprehensive regional-level analysis, this study explores its potential impact on enhancing educational quality. This research uses survey methods, interviews, and document analysis to understand better the dynamics of the Independent Curriculum's implementation in West Aceh. The findings indicate positive outcomes such as curriculum flexibility, freedom in teaching methodologies, and responsiveness to local conditions, which align with the principles of freedom-based learning approaches. This is consistent with literature emphasizing the importance of allowing teachers and schools to design a curriculum more relevant to local needs and student characteristics. However, challenges such as resource limitations, understanding of educational freedom, low community participation, and resistance to change reflect implementation issues identified in the literature. Consequently, implementing the Independent Curriculum necessitates careful strategies to overcome these obstacles and ensure its effectiveness. Improvement in teacher quality through further professional development aligns with research affirming that well-trained teachers positively impact student learning outcomes. These findings contribute to understanding the Independent Curriculum's implementation locally, serving as a valuable reference for policymakers and educational practitioners in similar regions.

Abstract

Teacher’s identity is crucial for the development of a professional teacher in education. It evolves through a continuous process of refinement and adaptation. Nevertheless, the construction of novice teachers’ professional identity in Islamic Junior High Schools, especially in the Indonesian context, is under-explored. Thus, this study aims to explore the development of English teachers’ professional identities and the integration between such identities and Islamic values as their religious beliefs in teaching in Islamic Junior High Schools. The narrative inquiry method was employed by three novice English teachers in Jambi. The data was collected through in-depth interviews to explore the novice teachers’ stories. The results were analyzed using Miles’ model through data condensation, data display, and conclusions. The research results show that novice teachers’ professional identity construction began with several challenges regarding adapting to the new profession, developing diverse learners’ needs, adapting teaching methods, and performing assessments. In terms of religious identity, these novice teachers reported their abilities to integrate Islamic values into teaching English through the lesson materials, becoming role models, and embracing tolerance in a multicultural society. The findings of this study suggest the need for support for novice teachers, including mentorship programs and professional development workshops, to enhance their professionalism. Such endeavor is pivotal to supporting students’ spiritual and moral development, leading to more inclusive learning environments. Implications for future research are related to longitudinal studies tracking novice teachers’ development and exploring their coping strategies, focusing on one facet of teachers’ identity.

Abstract

This quasi-experimental study investigates the impact of using free-body diagrams on the critical thinking skills of students studying rotational dynamics at MAN 1 Sungai Penuh. The study involved 140 eleventh-grade students, divided into an experimental group and a control group, each consisting of 70 students. The experimental group received instruction using free-body diagrams, while the control group followed traditional teaching methods. Critical thinking skills were assessed using a test comprising five essay questions, each representing different aspects of critical thinking: likelihood and uncertainty analysis, problem solving and decision making, reasoning, hypothesis testing, and argument analysis. Descriptive statistics and independent samples t-tests were employed to analyze the data. The results revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group in all aspects of critical thinking skills, with statistically significant differences and strong effect sizes. Specifically, the experimental group showed notable improvements in argument analysis, reasoning, and hypothesis testing. The findings suggest that the use of free-body diagrams significantly enhances students' critical thinking skills in the context of rotational dynamics. This study underscores the importance of incorporating visual learning aids in physics education to foster deeper understanding and improve analytical skills. The results have important implications for teaching practices, advocating for the integration of free-body diagrams to develop students' higher-order thinking skills effectively
