Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which the Consciousness-Raising (C-R) method improves students' writing skills and to identify the factors that influence the improvement process. The study was conducted with third-semester students in the English Department, consisting of 16 students. The research design was Classroom Action Research (CAR) and was carried out in three cycles over a period of 12 weeks, with four meetings including one test in each cycle. The cycles comprised of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Qualitative data was obtained through observation, field notes, and interviews, while quantitative data was obtained from students' writing tests. The results of this study showed improvement in the students' writing skills, as demonstrated by the teaching and learning activities throughout each cycle and the increasing scores of the students' writing tests, which went from 65.45 in cycle 1 to 77.63 in cycle 2 and 88.22 in cycle 3. The decrease in errors in each test cycle also supported this improvement. The observation and field notes indicated that the C-R method increased students' attention and awareness, resulting in more focus and engagement in the learning process. The factors that influenced the improvement of students' writing skills were motivation, the role of the instructor, classroom environment, materials, and media. The C-R method was found to be effective in improving students' writing skills and resolving writing problems. The researcher therefore recommends the use of this method, taking into consideration the supporting factors.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has compelled a shift to online learning, thereby necessitating parental involvement in their children's education at home. In this study, we aim to explore the perceptions and roles of parents in guiding their children's mathematics education during the pandemic. Our research comprises a sample of 67 participants who are parents of junior high school students with diverse occupational backgrounds in Jambi, Riau, and West Sumatra. We adopted an accidental sampling technique to select our research sample. The primary instrument for our study is a questionnaire that consists of closed questions that probe parents' emotions, knowledge, and perceptions regarding their responsibility in supporting their children's learning at home. Our survey was conducted in two phases: the initial phase spanning six months at the onset of the pandemic, and the second phase occurring several months later. Our findings indicate that during the first phase, parents were generally unaware of their roles and held negative perceptions of the online learning process. However, in the second phase, parents demonstrated a more proactive and mentoring role in supporting their children's online learning. Our study highlights the vital role of parents in facilitating their children's education during the pandemic and suggests that parental involvement is essential for optimizing online learning outcomes.

Abstract

One of the challenges faced by students is academic anxiety, which can have negative impacts on their academic activities. The aim of this study was to examine the direct effects of mindfulness, self-compassion, and resilience on academic anxiety, as well as the mediating role of resilience in these relationships. A cross-sectional study was conducted, and a sample of 344 university students from Jambi Province, Indonesia was recruited to complete the Academic Anxiety Scale (AAS), Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), and Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). The structural model was tested using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The study revealed that there were significant negative effects of mindfulness, self-compassion, and resilience on academic anxiety. Additionally, the findings indicated that resilience acted as a mediator in these relationships. This study has implications for the importance of preventing and managing academic anxiety among students by enhancing mindfulness, self-compassion, and resilience. Counseling services in universities should be maximized to address this issue.

Abstract

Sistem pendidikan pada saat ini lebih mengutamakan pada pengembangan sikap Spiritual yang ada hubungannya dengan kecerdasan spiritual (SQ). Kecerdasan spiritual (SQ) sangat penting dibentuk dalam diri mahasiswa. Kenyataan di lapangan, proses pendidikan yang selama ini dilakukan dinilai belum sepenuhnya berhasil dalam membangun manusia Indonesia yang berkarakter. Di samping itu, dilihat dari perkembangan zaman saat sekarang ini, kebutuhan masyarakat sangat dipengaruhi oleh budaya barat. Oleh sebab itu, individu jika dinilai dari kecerdasan spiritualnya sangat memprihatinkan. Jika dihadapkan dalam permasalahan individu akan mengambil jalan yang tidak baik. Penelitian ini menggunakan jenis penelitian kuantitatif dengan kajian deskriptif dengan pendekatan korelasional. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Jurusan Manajemen Pendidikan Islam Fakultas Tarbiyah dan Ilmu Keguruan IAIN Kerinci angkatan 2015, 2016, 2017, dan 2018 dengan jumlah mahasiswa sebanyak 118 orang. Jumlah sampel diambil dengan menggunakan teknik Propotional Stratified Random Sampling sehingga diperoleh sampel sebanyak 91 orang. Teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan skala likers. Analisis dilakukan dengan bantuan program SPSS Versi 20.00 dan data yang telah terkumpul dianalisis dengan cara (1) deskriptif data; (2) Pengujian Persyaratan Analisis; dan (3) Pengujian Hipotesis. Hasil Penelitian dijelaskan bahwa Pendidikan karakter dan lingkungan keluarga secara bersama-sama berkontribusi signifikan terhadap kecerdasan spiritual mahasiswa. Artinya, semakin tinggi pendidikan karakter dan hubungan lingkungan keluarga maka maka semakin tinggi kecerdasan spiritual mahasiswa.

Abstract

Ketatnya persaingan dalam lapangan kerja sekarang ini menuntut lulusan dari lembaga pendidikan yang bermutu pendidikan Islam sebagai agen perubahan sosial masyarakat. Indonesia dituntut untuk mampu memainkan perannya secara dinamis dan proaktif dalam setiap zaman. Harapan tersebut tidaklah mudah untuk diwujudkan, hingga pendidikan Islam di Indonesia sering berhadapan dengan berbagai problematika yang tidak ringan. Penelitian ini dirancang melalui pendekatan kualitatif untuk melakukan studi deskriptif dan explorative dengan jenis penelitiannya adalah studi kasus pendekatan fenomenologis naturalistik. Penetapan subjek yang ditetapkan dalam penelitian ini dengan teknik purposive atau sampel bertujuan. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan teknik pengumpulan data dengan cara pengamatan terlibat (participant observation), wawancara mendalam (indept interview), serta dokumentasi. Dalam analisis data penelitian ini penelitian menggunakan langkah-langkah analisis data penelitian kualitatif berikut: 1) reduksi data; 2) penyajian data; 3) penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil Penelitian perencanaan strategis dalam upaya peningkatan mutu lulusan yang dikaji melalui aspek proses perencanaan strategis yang meliputi peramalan dan pemprograman; pelibatan; dan pengambilan keputusan, faktor yang dipertimbangkan dalam proses pengimplementasian perencanaan strategis dalam upaya peningkatan mutu lulusan di MAN Sebukar, meliputi: (a)peraturan pemerintah; (b) standar mutu sebagai acuan madrasah; (c) tekanan perubahan masyarakat; (d) ketegangan antara berbagai macam pemenuhan kebutuhan yang satu dengan yang lain, baik dana, sarana dan prasarana.

Abstract

The present study aimed to examine the academic writing creativity and self-efficacy of Indonesian school teachers. Under a survey design, a five-point Likert scale of Academic Writing Creativity and Self-Efficacy (ACSE) questionnaire was distributed to school teachers in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi, of whom 262 voluntarily completed it. Rasch analysis was conducted on the quantitative data, with the results showing that almost half of Indonesian school teachers possess a low level of academic writing creativity and self-efficacy (N = 112, or 48.7%), some with a moderate level (N = 88, or 38.3%), and a few with a high level (N = 30, or 13%). Although teachers were found to have a strong ability to seek feedback on their writing from their colleagues and to make decisions about whether to accept or reject it, they lacked creativity in their academic writing, particularly their skill to express original ideas using a wide range of words and expressions in a grammatically correct manner. Moreover, their competence in utilizing technology for writing resources and assistance, such as researching pertinent literature, referencing accurately, paraphrasing effectively, and addressing spelling and other language errors, was limited. A discussion of the findings was presented in the article, and recommendations were offered regarding further academic writing training and research.

Abstract

Dayah is a religious educational institution that has been a hallmark of the Aceh government since the sultanate. Throughout its existence, Dayah's presence in Aceh faded due to changes in the national education system which was general and conventional. Historically, the revitalization of Dayah emerged after the establishment of the Dayah Institute at the Aceh Province level which houses the Dayah Education Department at the regency and administrative city levels. The Dayah Education Department in Aceh emerged as a result of Aceh's special autonomy rights after obtaining a peace agreement with the Government of the Republic of Indonesia. The Dayah Education Department is a unique legal entity because it is not owned by other provinces in Indonesia. This article is included in field research that uses a qualitative approach. The method used is a phenomenological study of the existence of the Dayah Education Department, especially in East Aceh. Data was obtained through interviews, documentation, and direct observation. The research results show that the Dayah Education Department in East Aceh has an important role in improving the quality of Dayah in East Aceh, such as improving facilities and infrastructure; life skills training for students, as well as improving the quality of teachers and educational staff.

Abstract

The most crucial inventory of literacy skills for students is completing a final project in the form of a thesis. However, many students experience high levels of anxiety during the guidance process, due to worries about conducting difficult research and demands from parents, as well as finding problems that can be used as titles, understanding how to write scientific papers, finding references, and meeting supervisors. This leads to stress among students, who feel pressured and lack confidence in their abilities, which is an important phenomenon studied here. Therefore, this study aims to determine the influence of student self-efficacy factors on their ability to complete their thesis. This research is a form of correlation between student self-efficacy and the ability to write a thesis, and it involved 117 seventh-semester students of the Islamic Religious Education study program at one of the Islamic universities in Jambi, Indonesia. The study used a Thesis Writing Resilience questionnaire consisting of 43 items and an Academic Self-Efficacy questionnaire consisting of 35 items. The study found a strong correlation between self-efficacy and the ability to complete a thesis with a correlation coefficient of -0.8. Therefore, there is a strong influence of student self-efficacy on their ability to write a thesis. Self-efficacy can reduce or decrease student anxiety in preparing a thesis. This level of academic self-efficacy is more influenced by the level of individual resilience to their beliefs and individual ability to master a task. By improving student self-efficacy, students can feel more confident and less anxious in the thesis writing process. Therefore, universities and educators should develop interventions to improve student self-efficacy, such as providing guidance and support to help students develop the necessary skills to complete their thesis successfully. Additionally, future research should explore other factors that may influence student self-efficacy, such as family support, cultural backgrounds, and personal motivation, to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the topic.

Abstract

Ethnoscience is one of the activities in transforming indigenous science into scientific science that can be implemented in the biology learning process. The implementation of the ethnoscience stage in biology learning perhaps can improve students' critical thinking skills, which is the aim of this research. This research is experimental research using a pretest-posttest control group design. The research population consisted of 36 students. The sample selection used a random sampling technique consisting of 2 classes (experimental and control), each class consisting of 18 students. Research data was obtained through pretest and posttest. There are 10 questions with 5 indicators of critical thinking skills through a minimal structure essay test. The results of the research show that there is an increase in students' critical thinking skills in understanding concepts that integrate native community knowledge into scientific knowledge through the ethnoscience stage compared to critical thinking skills that do not go through ethnoscience-based learning in biology learning. Therefore, ethnoscience-based learning is recommended to be applied in the learning process in other subjects such as biotechnology and bioappliance to help improve critical thinking skills and other skills in simplifying content-rich biological material.

Abstract

This research aims to compare the education equity policies in remote areas of Indonesia and Malaysia to identify the differences, similarities, and effectiveness in addressing socioeconomic disparities between urban and remote regions. The study examines policy documents, government reports, and previous research using a qualitative comparative approach. Indonesia employs a regional autonomy approach, while Malaysia adheres to a centralized system in education policy. Both countries have adopted financial assistance programs to increase the participation of students from low-income families in remote areas. Critical challenges in policy implementation include limited facilities and infrastructure, demanding access to transportation, limited human resources, and sociocultural barriers. The study finds that policy successes are evident in increased student participation, improved infrastructure accessibility, provision of teaching staff, and community support. However, budget constraints and human resource limitations remain significant obstacles. The research concludes that effective education equity policies require proactive government involvement, active community participation, and periodic monitoring and evaluation to enhance policy effectiveness.
