Abstract

Conversation analysis is one of the practical strategies for discourse analysis in speaking that may be used to teach oral English in an English foreign language classroom. Through conversational analysis, this study intends to examine the theoretical foundations of Arabian social identity and the possibility of using a discourse way of speaking to educate a group of learners. The current study focuses on cultural disparities between Arabic-speaking and English-speaking populations, examining the impact of such cultural barriers on Arab-English foreign language learners' communication. A case study of English foreign language students from the International Arab Egyptian School (IAES) was conducted to achieve this purpose. Using contrastive rhetoric, several challenges in students' English speaking were explained. Qualitative data analysis of culturally bound distinctions in numerous linguistic features such as letters, vowels, writing style, word use, and syntax, as well as some rhetoric and structural styles such as coordinating, subordinating, and metaphoric styles, revealed the high potential for errors and issues faced by Egyptian EFL students when developing spoken English. Data was collected by recording some sessions and extracting some language from both teachers and students by analyzing the language used inside the classroom. The most significant finding of this research is the organizing training to differentiate the interaction medium in the language classroom. In other words, teachers should use an "interactive decision-making" method in which they must make rapid decisions on which media to use to meet emerging issues such as subject matter comprehension, classroom management, or building a good rapport in the classroom.

Abstract

This study will examine the translation products of Arabic literary works that existed in the period of the Umawiyyah. This research generally uses two approaches, namely the literature approach and the translation science approach. Based on the translation approach, this study will measure the grammatical equivalence between Arabic and Bahasa Indonesia in the literary works of Arab poets during the Daulah Umawiyyah period. Then, this study will examine the application of translation techniques and methods in the literary works of the Arab poets of the Umawiyyah period. As for the approach to Literature, this research will investigate the product of the translation of literary works of Arab poets in the period of the Daulah Umawiyyah structurally. The diversity in Arabic Indonesian translation can be found in some aspects such as: (1) number, (2) gender, (3) person, (4) tense and aspect, and (5) voice. In addition, the application of translation techniques has a significant impact on the quality of Arabic poetry translation.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper is a study that examines the language code used by immigrant communities from the Tapal Kuda area, which is usually referred to as the Pendalungan group (the result of acculturation of Madurese and Javanese cultures who live and settle in the coastal area, in Roomo Pesisir Village, Gresik and their language patterns. This research is a qualitative research because it produces descriptive data in the form of written or spoken words from people and their observable behavior. The data collection techniques used are observation and interviews. At the data analysis stage, using ethnomethodological techniques in Ethnosociolinguistics. This study produced three language codes for the immigrant community in the Roomo Pesisir region, Gresik with details: 1) Indonesian; 2) Javanese (ngoko and krama); 3) Madurese (rough) language, and seven patterns of language selection in daily interactions by migrants from the Roomo Pesisir region, Gresik. The seven patterns of language selection are 1) everyday language in the family; 2) Language at school/workplace; 3) Language with fellow immigrants from the same area; 4) Language at the event (celebration, vaccine, recitation, etc.); 5) Language with parents; 6) Language based on ethnicity; 7) Language based on social status. Abstract

This study explores the character of Arthur “Boo” Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird through Sigmund Freud  psychoanalytic lens, focusing on his repression, isolation, and unconscious motivations. Arthur, a reclusive figure misunderstood by society, serves as a vital symbol of innocence and resilience in the face of trauma. The novel's themes of alienation and moral growth are intricately connected to Arthur’s interactions with the Finch children and the broader community. A qualitative research design was conducted, using textual analysis to examine Arthur “Boo” Radley’s psychological development and the dynamics of his id, ego, and superego. Key passages involving Arthur were analyzed to uncover how his experiences of trauma and societal judgment influence his actions and internal conflicts. The study reveals that Arthur's repressive upbringing and community ostracism shaped his unconscious desire for connection, which manifests in his small yet significant acts of kindness toward Scout and Jem. Findings suggest that Arthur “Boo” Radley’s character provides a profound commentary on the impact of trauma, the resilience of human kindness, and the importance of empathy in overcoming societal prejudices. His role as a moral catalyst for the Finch children highlights the novel's broader themes of justice, compassion, and the need to challenge preconceived notions. By analyzing Arthur “Boo” Radley, this study contributes to understanding the psychological underpinnings of literary characters and their relevance to societal issues.

Abstract

This research explores Roz's emotional growth as reflected through her language choices in The Wild Robot movie using the Systemic functional Linguistics (SFL) framework, specifically the Mood system, as well as Barrett's Constructed Emotion theory. This study aims to analyze how Roz's transition from a task-focused robot to an emotionally aware being is reflected through Mood types: declarative, interrogative, and imperative. Using a qualitative descriptive method, Roz's utterances are analyzed based on Mood types and their interpersonal meanings. The results show that declaratives dominate at all stages of Roz's development, but change from mechanical and logical statements to reflective and relational expressions. Interrogatives decreased in frequency, but became more profound when used to explore abstract concepts such as love. Meanwhile, imperatives transform from procedural commands to expressions of protection and care. These linguistic changes reflect Roz's emotional development, which is supported by Barrett's theory that emotions are constructed through social, psychological, and neurological experiences. This research highlights the relationship between language and character development, and contributes to understanding how fictional dialog can convey emotional development.

Abstract

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) in elementary schools, particularly in resource-limited settings, presents significant challenges. In Yogyakarta, Indonesia, these challenges are intensified in a public school, where limited resources, such as teaching materials, technology, and professional development opportunities, hinder the ability of teachers to deliver effective language instruction. Despite these constraints, English remains a crucial part of the education system in Indonesia, with increasing recognition of its importance for academic, professional, and social advancement. This study aims to explore the specific challenges faced by teachers in a public elementary school in Yogyakarta, and the strategies they employ to overcome these challenges in teaching English to young learners. A qualitative research design was employed, with data collected through interviews with three experienced teachers from the early stages in the school. The study identifies key challenges, including students’ difficulties with pronunciation, short attention spans, bilingualism, and the quick forgetting of lessons. It also highlights strategies that teachers use to address these issues, such as incorporating fun songs and videos, using games, and employing interactive methods to engage students. The findings underscore the importance of creative, low-cost strategies in overcoming resource limitations and fostering an engaging and effective learning environment. This research contributes valuable insights into TEFL practices in resource-constrained contexts and offers recommendations for improving English language teaching in similar settings worldwide.

Abstract

This paper examines the theme of adaptation and identity formation in L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables, focusing on the character of Anne Shirley and her resilience in the face of social exclusion and adversity. The study aims to explore how Anne’s personal growth is shaped by external societal pressures and how her imagination serves as a coping mechanism to overcome these challenges. This paper uses Durkheim’s theory of social facts and C. Wright Mills’ concept of sociological imagination to analyze how Anne’s interactions with the Avonlea community reflect broader social integration, conformity, and individual agency issues. The method employed is a close textual analysis of Anne’s character development, focusing on her social environment and internal psychological strategies. By applying sociological frameworks, the study situates Anne’s struggles within a larger context of social pressures and adaptation.The findings suggest that Anne’s resilience, imagination, and intelligence allow her to navigate an initially hostile environment, leading to her eventual acceptance in Avonlea. The paper concludes that Anne of Green Gables offers enduring insights into the complexities of social adaptation and personal identity, making it relevant to contemporary discussions on resilience and societal expectations.

Abstract

This study examines the psychological complexity of Jenny Curran in Forrest Gump (1994) through a psychoanalytic lens, focusing on how unconscious desires influence her actions and relationships. Using Sigmund Freud’s concept of the Id, Ego, and Superego, the research explores the impact of childhood trauma and societal expectations on her self-destructive tendencies. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing content analysis of key scenes that depict Jenny’s psychological struggles. Primary data includes dialogues, behaviors, and pivotal moments in the film, while secondary sources comprise psychoanalytic theory and literature on trauma and gender representation. The study interprets Jenny’s decisions through the tension between impulsive desires and moral reasoning, revealing that Jenny’s behavior is largely controlled by the Id, which seeks immediate gratification and escape from emotional distress. However, her Ego mediates between these desires and external reality, while her Superego reinforces guilt and internalized moral constraints. This psychological conflict shapes her unstable relationships, particularly with Forrest, as she alternates between seeking love and rejecting emotional security. Her journey illustrates the lasting effects of unresolved trauma and the unconscious forces that dictate human behavior. By analyzing Jenny’s character, this research enhances the understanding of female character development in film through psychoanalysis. It demonstrates how cinematic narratives depict internal struggles, offering insights into the portrayal of women’s experiences in media. Furthermore, it contributes to discussions on trauma, identity, and psychological depth in film storytelling, highlighting the role of unconscious motivations in shaping characters arcs. These findings underscore the significance of psychoanalytic film analysis in understanding how past trauma influences characters’ actions and relationships, providing a deeper perspective on the psychological complexities of female figures in films.

Abstract

This research investigates the linguistic features present in text messaging among students enrolled in an English literature program. The study specifically examines the WhatsApp group "Ellite Students Assemble," utilizing the classification of linguistic features developed by Ali, Hasnain, and Beg (2021) and exploring the factors that influence the use of textese. This research employs a qualitative design to analyze linguistic characteristics in digital communication, particularly on WhatsApp. The analysis encompasses morpho-syntactic and phonological features, revealing a complex phenomenon of language adaptation. A detailed examination of WhatsApp texts highlights the occurrence of each linguistic feature, providing insights into the observed patterns and tendencies. The study identifies key influences on texting styles, including informality, speed, efficiency, and creative expression. Interviews with five active participants elucidate the reasons behind their textese choices, demonstrating that individuals adjust their texting styles based on considerations of formality, efficiency, and creative expression. The results illustrate the dynamic nature of language within the WhatsApp context among English literature students. An understanding of these linguistic features and their influences offers valuable insights for educators, researchers, and language enthusiasts, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of contemporary communication practices.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the types of politeness strategies and the factors that influence their use in a video interview between Zane Lowe and Taylor Swift entitled “Taylor Swift’s Songwriting Process on evermore”. The theory used to answer the two research problems was Brown & Levinson (1987), and the qualitative method was used as the research method. The result indicates that there are 41 utterances containing politeness strategies, which are divided into 1 bald on record, 30 positive politeness, 9 negative politeness, and 1 off record. The strategy found in bald on record is no face threat minimization. Furthermore, it was found that Zane and Taylor used various sub-strategies of positive politeness, which consist of 6 exaggerating, 8 giving gifts to the hearer, 8 presupposing, raising, and asserting common ground, 1 including S and H in the activity, 1 be optimistic, 1 intensifying interest to the hearer, 2 joking, 2 noticing, attending to the hearer, and 1 seeking agreement. For negative politeness, the sub-strategies used are 7 questions and hedge and 2 apologize. Finally, for off record, use contradictions. Therefore, the most dominant strategy is positive politeness with the sub-strategy of giving gifts to the hearer and presupposing, raising, and asserting common ground. Furthermore, it was found that payoff and social distance are two factors that influence the use of politeness strategies. The payoff factor appears in 40 utterances and social distance 4 utterances. Thus, it can be stated that Zane and Taylor want to establish a friendly, relaxed, and positive conversation and strengthen closeness. The payoff factor also implies that both want to satisfy each other’s face.
