Alsuna: Journal of Arabic and English Language is published by the Arabic Language Education Program and Foreign Language Department of Institut Pesantren KH. Abdul Chalim Mojokerto-Indonesia. The editor welcomes language studies, language observers, and practitioners of Arabic-English teachers or researchers around the world to submit scientific articles to be published in this journal. Purpose - This research aims to analyze the speaking ability and critical thinking of the EFL students after conducting activities by using British Parliamentary. Design/methodology/approach - was descriptive research that explains the debate activity as one option for improving students' speaking ability and their critical thinking by concerning the data in fieldwork. The data was taken by analysis and interview. Findings/result - The research used a descriptive qualitative research design by collecting the data from the daily test of State Senior High School of 5 Bogor. The sample was thirty-six students and ten students as the sample from the interview activity. The final result that has been found from the research such as, 0 students (0%) scored are between 60-70, 15 students (41.7%) scored between 75-80, and 21 students (58.30%) scored between 85-90. Therefore, the success of the debate activity is determined by some requirements of the students in the class. Originality/value - The debate activity by using British parliamentary is one of the best solutions to make the students become more aware of the current issue and be brave to speak of their thought and improve their speaking ability. Purpose - This study aims to determine the implementation of the extracurricular mumārasah program at MA Ali Maksum and the extent to which the extracurricular mumārasah in improving Arabic speaking skills. Design/methodology/approach - This research is quantitative descriptive. To collect data, researchers used a questionnaire. To test the effectiveness of mumārasah extracurricular, the authors used pre-test and post-test tests. Findings - The study results indicate that implementing extracurricular activities for mumārasah runs with a learning model using direct methods, small group discussions, role-playing, memorizing dialogue, role-playing, and group conversations. However, the extracurricular implementation is considered ineffective due to several factors, such as the unformed lughāwiyyah and the low discipline level. The mumārasah extracurricular effectiveness test results in improving students' Arabic speaking skills proved effective with a significant increase, namely, 3.388. Originality/value - Extracurricular mumārasah teacher also expected to make rules or agreements discipline with students in class individual, so that students are more disciplined and follow classes with regular. Purpose - The purpose of the research is to know the kinds of uṣlūb al-muqābalah used in al-Qur’ān and know his intention from the balāghah aspect. These research objects are uṣlūb al-muqābalah in al-Qur’ān at part 30 of 24 uṣlūb. Design/methodology/approach - The method used in data collecting is the sheet of library research and literature. The method used in data analysis is Balāghah Descriptive and Content Analysis by using a table. Findings - After research uṣlūb al-muqābalah in al-Qur’ān at part 30, the writer takes conclusion are: 1) The verses become uṣlūb al-muqābalah is 24 uṣlūb. They are 17 uṣlūb from al- muqābalah min ma’nayaini and 7 uṣlūb from al-muqābalah aksar min ma’nayaini. 2) Purpose of uṣlūb al-muqābalah is: a. For beautiful words (All uṣlūb), b. To an explanation of ma’na (14 uṣlūb), c. To emphasizing of ma’na (10 uṣlūb), d. Too easy in memories (all uṣlūb). Originality/value - The benefit of this research is helping Muslims understand al-Qur’ān with uṣlūb al-muqābalah, and finding the miracle of al-Qur’ān. Paper type – Research Paper

Purpose - This study aims to uncover the Performance-Based Strategy on Evaluating to Write for students at the Arabic Literature Faculty of Universitas Negeri Malang. Design/methodology/approach - This research uses a qualitative approach with a multi-site case study type. While the primary data collection method uses in-depth interviews, and the secondary data uses the Participant Observation and Documentation methods. Findings - This study reveals the Performance-based strategy used by lecturers in writing: writing simple sentences and compound sentences and writing descriptions of places and things. Originality/value - The Use of a Performance-based strategy can help the teacher obtain accurate information in determining learning outcomes in learning to write. Paper type – Research Paper

Purpose - This research describes the model, shape, planning process, and design of the Takhaṣṣuṣ al-Lughah al-'Arabiyah program at Al-Kamal Integrated Islamic Boarding School Blitar. Design/methodology/approach - This research method uses qualitative research, with data in the form of descriptive. Data collection is used employing observation, interviews, and documentation. Findings/result - The results of this study are as follows: 1). Takhaṣṣuṣ al-Lughah al-ʿarabiyah program uses a bottom-up planning model, where the concept of the idea of this activity is created and arranged by the language administrator and then coordinated by the chairman and the board of daily administrators, and approved by the caretaker of the cottage. 2). This form of program planning includes short-term and institutional. 3). The planning process is carried out optimally with clear activity procedures and is easily understood by the students. 4). Learning design is not like formal schools in general, so there is no standard competency and basic competence. The learning strategy uses a jigsaw system to enrich mufradāt or vocabulary by repeating the words that have been learned so that they are quickly memorized. Originality/value - knowing planning management of Takhaṣṣuṣ al-Lughah al-ʿarabiyah Program is very important to be able to measure how good the administration of educational planning in this program. Purpose - This study aims to determine whether the learning process with full English will be able to improve students' abilities in English skills more quickly. Design/methodology/approach - This research method is a qualitative method with a case study approach. This research was conducted in Malang. Researchers used junior high school students from grades 7 to 9 who have the same case for sampling. The method of data collection is by observation and a questionnaire containing ten statements. Then the authors analyzed the data using data reduction patterns, data presentation, and verification/conclusions. After that, the authors tabulated the data so that they could be described easily. Findings/result - The results of this study indicate that the use of full English in learning to listen to a procedural and a narrative text with gestures has positive opinions and perceptions from students, this also helps them find out some difficult vocabulary that is not yet known, helps students understand faster and last longer to remember vocabulary, besides that it also gives them the motivation to learn English. Originality/value - Optimistic and innovative teachers, are the keys to student success in improving English comprehension by listening to full English. Paper type – Research paper

Abstract: Purpose - The purpose of this research is to know how much the influence of Double Brain Power Strategy to improve reading comprehension of exposition text students. Design/methodology/approach - This study used quantitative method by using a pre-experimental design. This research will use a pre-experimental design which is the researchers only apply one class as the sample to consecrate pre-test, treatment of behaviour towards and post-test. The researchers also used 1 group pre-test until post-test group design to calculate students' reading before and after treatment. Findings/result - Double Brain Power strategy could increase students’ reading comprehension and give an upgrade to the students in learning reading mastery. Purpose - This study aims to explore students’ behaviour, emotional, and cognitive engagement in EFL class during Covid-19 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach - A qualitative approach with class observation, interview, and questionnaire was undertaken to examine the students’ engagement. Teachers and student of two public junior senior high schools in Jakarta, Indonesia involved voluntarily to this study. 5 teachers’ (1 man and 4 women) classes were observed and they were interviewed. 467 (187 male and 280 female) students were administered the questionnaire and 9 of them were interviewed. Findings - The result suggested that the students were disengaged behaviourally, emotionally, and cognitively in English class during distance learning. It occurred due to some factors such as uninteresting learning activities, unstable signal, and lack of students’ understanding. The study provides practical implications for English language teachers. They need to construct the interesting and various learning activities and effective strategies to gain their students’ engagement. Originality/value - Abundance of literatures investigated teaching and learning practices during Covid-19. However, a few studies examined students’ engagement in distance learning. Thus, this study concerned on students’ engagement in EFL class for junior high school level. Paper type – Research paper

Purpose - To fill the void, this study comes with the aim of finding out perception which underpins the extent to which activities have fulfilled the teachers’ need of their development through Teachers’ Forum (MGMP) or not, amid post-Covid-19 at this moment. Design/methodology/approach - This study employed a qualitative approach by using an open-ended questionnaire and recruiting 25 in-service teachers. Findings - The finding of this study revealed that most the in-service teachers have their positive view to excel their professional development, especially with regard to making clear of learning aims, widening up the horizon to provide sufficient materials many resources, adding knowledge and skills in pedagogical strategies, and strengthening ability in selecting appropriate assessment in the activities conducted by MGMP. Purpose - This research stems from the problem of the difficulty of learning the Arabic language, and the reason may be due to the lack of benefit from the social media that is now open. This is research aims to (1) to know the teaching of Arabic through social media at Al-Azhar Institute Pare Kediri (2) to know the lack and advantages of teaching Arabic through social media at Al-Azhar Pare Kediri Institute. Design/methodology/approach - The research design is descriptive-qualitative research. The data gained are written words and sentences from the novel that imply an educational value. Findings - The results of this are research that learning Arabic through social media in Al-Azhar is not organized. Well, because learning using social media is not included in the objectives of learning Arabic at Al-Azhar Institute Pare Kediri. On the other hand, to participate in online learning, Al-Azhar Institute Pare Kediri opens the program through Zoom application instead of social media; (2) Knowing the advantages of learning through social media at Al-Azhar Institute Pare Kediri is like an institution that has many Arabic language learning programs. As for the lack of learning Arabic through social media in Al-Azhar, social media has not been used optimally for Arabic language learning programs.
