Abstract

The waste problem in Yogyakarta has become a pressing environmental issue, especially amidst increasing urbanization and population growth. The closure of the Piyungan landfill, which was expected to be a long-term solution, has instead created new challenges in waste management. This study explores the implementation of environmental fiqh concepts in waste management in Yogyakarta as an effort to align pro-environmental actions with Islamic values. This study employed library research with a normative approach, using secondary data sources, and qualitative descriptive analysis. The analysis focused on waste issues, regulations, and environmental jurisprudence (fiqh). The results indicate that Yogyakarta's waste problem, exacerbated by population growth and urbanization, represents a pressing environmental challenge. Although the government has taken steps such as the closure of the Piyungan landfill and the decentralization of waste management, challenges such as the lack of recycling facilities and low public awareness remain major obstacles. Regulations such as Law No. 18 of 2008 and Regional Regulation No. 1 of 2022, although important, have not been optimally implemented.

Abstract

This study examines the prohibition of sleeping in mosques through a library research approach, focusing on classical Islamic jurisprudence and contemporary fatwas. The research aims to explore how different schools of Islamic law (madhāhib) conceptualize the permissibility or restriction of sleeping in mosques, and how modern religious authorities interpret and regulate this practice in response to current social contexts. Primary sources such as the Qur’an, Hadith, and classical fiqh manuals are analyzed alongside recent fatwas issued by religious institutions in Indonesia and other Muslim-majority countries. The findings indicate that while sleeping in mosques is generally permitted under certain conditions—such as iʿtikāf, necessity, or travel—many contemporary fatwas and mosque management bodies discourage or restrict the practice to maintain the sanctity, cleanliness, and primary function of the mosque as a place of worship. This study highlights the dynamic interplay between normative Islamic teachings and contemporary socio-institutional needs, revealing ongoing tensions between religious permissibility and practical governance of sacred spaces.

Abstract

The management of Qurban savings by the Darul Ihsan Mosque in Banjarworo Village, Bangilan District, Tuban Regency, has garnered attention. This is primarily because it originates from a non-financial, socially-oriented institution dedicated to facilitating Qurban participation for underprivileged communities. This study aimed to investigate the operational mechanisms of this Qurban savings program and assess its compliance with Islamic law. The research employed a qualitative approach utilizing field data (field research) with a descriptive-analytical nature, complemented by a normative-empirical perspective. Data collection involved observation, interviews, and documentation. The collected data were then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The findings indicate that the practices of this Qurban savings program align with the principles of wadi>‘ah yad al-ama>nah, Fatwa DSN-MUI Number: 02/DSN-MUI/IV/2000 concerning savings, and the regulations outlined in KHES (Compilation of Islamic Economic Law). However, the study identified instances of default by participants due to delayed payments. Despite these challenges, the program genuinely reflects the objectives of maqa>s}id al-shari>‘ah, particularly concerning the preservation of wealth (h}ifz} al-ma>l) and the preservation of religion (h}ifz} al-di>n). Furthermore, it provides substantial social and spiritual benefits to the community.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors that influence the learning achievement of participants in a non-formal Arabic language learning program and identify possible solutions to overcome these obstacles. This study used a qualitative approach with data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, and reflective journals. The results showed variations in learning achievement; some respondents had never completed a program, while others had successfully completed certain programs such as Muyassar volume 1, Ilmu Shorof, and BISA. Inhibiting factors were divided into two categories: internal and external. Internal factors included low learning motivation and difficulty understanding the material, while external factors included workloads, schedule conflicts, health conditions, family responsibilities, and minimal social support. Some solutions proposed by respondents included time flexibility, improving teaching quality, social support, utilizing technology, more effective learning methods, fostering motivation, and establishing learning priorities. These findings indicate that implementing non-formal Arabic language learning requires a holistic, adaptive, and integrative approach to enable students to achieve optimal program completion.

Abstract

This research is based on the need of Muslims for legal guidance that is responsive to the development of modern Islamic economics and finance. Fatwas have a strategic role in addressing contemporary issues, particularly in Indonesia through the National Sharia Council of the Indonesian Ulema Council (DSN-MUI) as the authoritative institution in issuing fatwas. The purpose of this research is to analyze the role of the principle of maslahat as the main basis in the legal istinbath process carried out by DSN-MUI. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with a literature review of DSN-MUI fatwas as well as references to fiqh books and the principles of ushul fiqh. The results show that the principles of maslahat, such as ainama wujidati al-maslahatu fasamma hukmullahi, dar’u al-mafāsid muqaddam ‘alā jalb al-maṣāliḥ, and tasharruful imam ‘ala raiyatihi manutun bi al-maslahah, play an important role in adapting Sharia law to the dynamics of modern finance. In conclusion, the application of the principle of maslahat allows the DSN-MUI fatwa to remain contextual, flexible, and relevant without abandoning the basic principles of Islamic law.

Abstract

The growing trend of Muslim travel to various global destinations necessitates the concept of halal tourism, which prioritises not only the fulfilment of Islamic law but also Islamic ethical and spiritual values. However, the implementation of halal tourism has tended to be reductive, focusing primarily on halal food and prayer facilities, without exploring more substantive Quranic dimensions. This study aims to explore the meaning of riḥlah in the Quran based on Ash-Shaʻrāwī’s interpretation and examine its implications for contemporary Muslim travel ethics. Using a qualitative method with a thematic approach and analysis of Ash-Shaʻrāwī’s thematic interpretations, data were collected from tafsir books, supporting literature, and secondary sources on halal tourism. The results show that riḥlah, from the Ash-Shaʻrāwī perspective, is not merely a physical activity of moving from one place to another, but a spiritual and epistemological process of knowing God through His signs in nature. Riḥlah also has social, economic, and educational functions, emphasising morality, responsibility, and self-reflection. In the context of halal tourism, these values form the basis for establishing a responsible, environmentally conscious, and respectful Muslim travel ethic.

Abstract

Although economic growth is often used as a development benchmark, a holistic assessment of quality of life requires more comprehensive indicators. This study analyzes human development across eight regencies/cities in Banten Province using a maqashid syariah approach. Employing a quantitative descriptive method with composite index construction, the research develops an Islamic Human Development Index (IHDI) based on five dimensions: safeguarding religion (hifdz al-dīn), life (hifdz al-nafs), intellect (hifdz al-‘aql), progeny (hifdz al-nasl), and wealth (hifdz al-māl). Secondary data were normalized and aggregated using weighted calculations. The results reveal substantial regional disparities, with Cilegon City recording the highest IHDI (0.69546) and Lebak Regency the lowest (0.48958). These gaps are mainly driven by the intellect and wealth dimensions, which remain weaker in agrarian regions than in urban areas. Despite a zero score in the religion dimension, Tangerang City maintains a moderate IHDI due to strong performance in intellect and wealth. The findings highlight the importance of integrating maqashid syariah into equitable regional development policies, particularly through improving education and strengthening local economies.

Abstract

This study aims to: (1) Describe the biography of Majid Irsan Al-Kailani (2) Analyze the goals and methods of Islamic education from Majid Irsan Al-Kailani's perspective (3) Analyze the relevance of the development of goals and methods of Islamic education from Majid Irsan Al-Kailani's perspective with contemporary Islamic education. This type of research is qualitative research with library research method and figure study approach. The primary data source in this study is the book Ahdaf at-Tarbiyah al-Islamiyah Dirasah Muqaranah baina Ahdaf at-Tarbiyah al-Islamiyah wa al-Ahdaf at-Tarbawiyah al-Mu'asharah by Majid Irsan Al-Kailani and supported by Al-Kailani's works as well as books, journals, and scientific works related to the discussion in the study as secondary sources. The data analysis technique used is content analysis. The results of the study show that Majid Irsan Al-Kailani's thoughts on the goals and methods of Islamic education are very relevant to the present day. He formulated four main goals of education: the formation of good individuals (al-fard al-shalih), the Islamic family (al-usrah al-muslimah), the community of messengers (ummah al-risalah), and human brotherhood (al-ukhuwah al-insaniyah). All of these points culminate in the effort to produce complete human beings (al-insan al-kamil al-raqi) capable of realizing the vision of Islamic education by fostering a strong spiritual relationship between students and Allah SWT.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students' ability to read and write the Qur'an through the application of the combined Iqra'-Imla' method at MTs Al-Khairaat Tompe. The background of the study shows that most students still have difficulty pronouncing the hijaiyah letters correctly, understanding the rules of tajweed, and writing Arabic letters correctly. The Iqra' method focuses on the skill of reading the Qur'an gradually and systematically, while the Imla' method emphasizes the skill of writing Arabic letters through dictation exercises. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, reading and writing ability tests, and documentation. The results of the study showed a significant increase after the application of the combined method. The average score for reading the Qur'an increased from 55 to 78, while the skill of writing Arabic letters increased from 50 to 80. Student responses were also positive, seen from increased motivation, self-confidence, and discipline in learning. Thus, the Iqra'-Imla' method is proven to be effective in improving students' Qur'an literacy and is relevant to be applied in Islamic Religious Education learning.

Abstract

Tradition and worship are inseparable from Muslims, as part of religious rites that are rich in meaning and individual experiences, one of which is the Hajj tradition. This study aims to describe and analyze the meaning of the Asajere tradition for the Madurese Muslim community. The research method used is a qualitative method, descriptive-interpretive. This study uses a socio-anthropological approach. The data sources for this study come from Hajj pilgrims and the Madurese community who still practice the Asajere tradition in Gajamsana Daya Village, Pasean District, Pamekasan Regency. The researcher also uses supporting data sources from religious leaders and the Madurese community. To ensure the validity of the data, the author uses source triangulation techniques. This study results in the finding that Asajere is a form of Hajj tradition carried out to welcome the return of Hajj pilgrims. Asajere has a very philosophical meaning, as an expression of gratitude as well as a socio-religious mechanism to strengthen the moral legitimacy and social status of Hajj pilgrims in society. This tradition embodies a strong social dynamic, encompassing social solidarity, symbolic social interaction, and cultural behavior management, reflecting the principles of culture-based Hajj management. Asajere serves as a form of cultural resistance to modernization by emphasizing the identity of adaptive, reflective, and contextual local wisdom.
