Abstract

This study aims to compare the quality of education between Public Elementary Schools (SDN) and Public Islamic Elementary Schools (MIN) in Medan City based on parents' perspectives. Educational quality is understood as a multidimensional concept encompassing academic and non-academic aspects, such as teacher competence, facilities, academic achievement, character education, religious education, social skills, and the school environment. This study used a mixed methods approach with a sequential explanatory design, beginning with the collection and analysis of quantitative data through a Likert-scale questionnaire with 20 parents of grades IV–VI (10 parents from SDN and 10 parents from MIN), followed by semi-structured interviews to deepen understanding of the quantitative findings. Quantitative data analysis was conducted using comparative tests (t-test and ANOVA), while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The results showed that there were no significant differences between SDN and MIN in terms of academic quality, including teacher competence, learning methods, and student readiness to continue to the next level of education. However, there were significant differences in the aspect of facilities, where SDN was considered superior. In contrast, MIN (Min) demonstrated significant excellence in non-academic aspects, particularly character education, religious education, social skills, and the school's social environment. These findings indicate that SDN (State Elementary School) and MIN (Min) each have their own strengths that influence parents' preferences in choosing a school. This study concludes that the quality of primary education in Medan City is determined not only by academic achievement but also by character formation and a supportive social environment, and provides important implications for developing more holistic and equitable education policies.

Abstract

The tradition of the 1 Suro night is a Javanese cultural heritage with spiritual value, although some of its practices are viewed as not entirely aligned with Islamic teachings. This study aims to examine how Islamic education can provide a critical and contextual understanding so that the tradition remains consistent with Islamic values without abandoning local cultural identity. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using a case study method focused on the community of Petanusugi Village. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The data analysis involved the stages of reduction, presentation, and verification, supported by content and discourse analysis. The findings indicate that religious leaders, Islamic education teachers, and community members generally perceive the 1 Suro night tradition positively, as long as it does not contradict Islamic law. The tradition has the potential to serve as a medium for Islamic character education, particularly through values such as self-purification, spiritual awareness, maintaining social bonds, and strengthening monotheism. Activities such as public religious lectures and communal prayer serve as effective forms of integration between local culture and Islamic values.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strategies used by Islamic Education (PAI) teachers in instilling religious tolerance values in secondary schools in Kota Binjai, identify the obstacles faced during the learning process, and formulate solutions to improve the effectiveness of these strategies. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study method, involving PAI teachers as research subjects, and data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and document studies. The results show that PAI teachers apply various strategies such as role modeling, interactive dialogue, and the use of learning media but face challenges including limited time, inflexible curriculum, and negative influences from the social environment and digital media. Abstract

This research focuses on the urgency of improving students' critical thinking skills, recognized as a crucial competency for facing 21st-century challenges. To address this challenge, the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model has been identified as a strategic and effective pedagogical approach for fostering higher-order cognitive abilities. Previous literature has confirmed the positive contribution of PjBL to learning outcomes, but there is a significant research gap regarding the exploration of the internal mechanisms underlying this success, namely Deep Learning. Deep Learning, which involves comprehensive understanding of meaning rather than mere memorization, is a crucial prerequisite for the authentic and transferable development of students' critical thinking skills. Therefore, the primary objective of this research is to empirically test and analyze the effect of the PjBL model on improving students' critical thinking skills in relation to the quality of the Deep Learning it facilitates. Using a quasi-experimental method, the results of this study are expected to provide clear theoretical and practical contributions, demonstrating that the effectiveness of PjBL in improving critical thinking skills stems from its ability to encourage students to engage in deeper knowledge processing.

Abstract

School principal leadership based on local wisdom is a leadership model that integrates local values, norms, traditions, and culture into the management and decision-making processes of schools. This study aims to describe the implementation of Pacu Jalur-based local wisdom leadership in School-Based Management (SBM) and its impact on student character development and the improvement of learning quality at SMP Negeri 2 Kuantan Hilir Seberang. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The results indicate that Pacu Jalur-based local wisdom leadership is reflected in values such as cooperation, sportsmanship, mutual aid, responsibility, hard work, and discipline. These values are implemented in learning activities, extracurricular programs, and school culture, contributing to the formation of students' character and the creation of a collaborative and disciplined learning environment. The findings show that local wisdom can serve as a legitimate managerial and pedagogical framework, as it is capable of strengthening character education, building a positive school culture, and making the educational process more contextual with the local cultural environment.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of the muhadatsah method in improving Arabic speaking skills at Pesantren Sahabat Quran, identify the supporting and inhibiting factors in its application, and evaluate the effectiveness of the method. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study method, involving active students, Arabic teachers, and pesantren administrators as informants. Data collection techniques include participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, while data analysis uses the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The results show that the muhadatsah method is intensively applied through active conversational practice, which encourages improvements in fluency, vocabulary enrichment, and understanding of Arabic sentence structures. The main supporting factors are a conducive learning environment and student motivation, while limited practice time and low self-confidence become obstacles. Overall, the muhadatsah method is proven effective in enhancing Arabic speaking skills among students at Pesantren Sahabat Quran.
