Abstract

This paper reports the appraisal analysis - particularly the attitudinal language - of Indonesian flora and fauna discourse on the official website of Indonesian tourism by examining 11 articles, accessed on www.Indonesia.travel. This paper qualitatively identifies the appraised features denoting Indonesian flora and fauna discourse and examined their appraising resources by applying Martin & White’s (2005) framework. Through the lens of interpersonal meaning, this paper criticizes how the website communicates through flora & fauna discourse in tourism to global readers. Findings reveal that affect, judgement, and appreciation function in several ways: introduce Indonesian endangered and endemic species, present the government’s seriousness to preserve the species, and promote the happiness and satisfaction tourists can feel when visiting the sites. From an ecolinguistics point of view, the website presents a beneficial discourse since it does not focus on feelings the tourists may have but the appreciation of the natural phenomena.

Abstract

This study explores the ways in which America: The Jesuit Review, one Catholic media in the United Sates represents the COVID-19 pandemic to the believers. Using Critical Discourse Analysis, the analyzed materials include 35 selected articles appeared from March to May 2020 publication. Stylistic devices, discursive practice, and ideological implications are the three main analyzing techniques. The analysis reveals that, first, rhetorical style predominates. Secondly, comforting rather than disabling is the mode used in the reporting. Lastly, Pope Francis as the head of the Catholic Church is the moral reference in his call for faith, hope, and compassion during this pandemic time.

Abstract

This study conducted an approximate replication of Marsden, Whong, & Gil's (2018) ‘What’s in the Textbook and What’s in the Mind: Polarity Item Any in Learner English’. Forty Indonesian speaking learners of English knowledge of English Negative Polarity Item any was investigated and the results were compared with the results of the original study (ibid.) including the additional study conducted by the same authors (Gil et al., 2017). The purpose of this study is to provide a replicated and extended study to the reliability of the original study by investigating different populations and comparing their performance with the performance of the population in the original study as well as by adding an additional language item some to be tested in a Truth Value Judgment Task (TVJT). This study focused on English NPI any and how Indonesian speaker learners of English acquire its properties when the properties were both taught and not taught. The results confirmed the original study with an additional finding that there was no correlation between the learners’ knowledge of any with their knowledge of some. Therefore, it is suggested that the existing instruction of the use of any should no longer be contrasted with some, but presented in a more meaningful context.

Abstract

This study aims to know the socio-cultural aspects of the discourse kada to minaa Toraja in the formation of the character of learners. This research method is qualitative with an ethnographic design. The data analysis technique in this study is Ethnographic Research Cycle. The results of this study showed that the socio-cultural aspects of kada to minaa Toraja discourse in the formation of the character of learners are: First, the aspect of politeness value in kada to minaa, namely Mekatabe' londong lako to disa'bu' gayang ma'pampang ma'paran-paran. Second, the religious aspect of kada to minaa "Di posulo sulo lalan di pobia' kalambanan." Third, aspects of social practice or habits/rituals contained in kada to minaa, namely "Laku olapa umbating lakulomban pamario." Fourth, aspects of family values in the expression "Totiumba' Batu Rupanna tama Tandung Kalonaran." Fifth, aspects of the value of humility in kada to minaa "Tang lara'ba pa te riu laku lessa', tangmaupu' pa' te umpalumba' sangpatikan anna bisara." Sixth, the religious aspect of kada to minaa speech is "Antan Tundan tongan mora Puang dimatua dao masua anggana to palulungan dao pataralayukna."

Abstract

This study examines the lexical complexity of undergraduate students' speaking performance, taking from their performance in Pechakucha. Pechakucha is an internet-based platform that enables people to do their presentations at a specific time and share it worldwide. The researcher uses PechaKucha since it enhances the students' actual speaking competence by giving them limited time to discuss an image. The lexical complexity of the students' speaking performance is measured using Lexical Complexity Analyser (LCA). This present study finds a significant difference between students' lexical frequency when performing descriptive and narrative oral presentations, shown by the sig.2-tailed of that variable is less than 0.05. While on the other hand, students' lexical variation, lexical density and lexical sophistication showed that the sig-2 tailed value is higher than 0.05, which means there is no significant difference between those two oral presentations. The finding indicates that the students' word choices are similar, and the measurements of their lexical complexity are influenced by the different requirements applied in two oral presentations. In addition, Pechakucha is one of the speaking activities which can be an alternative activity during online classes which prevent students from having face-to-face speaking activity.

Abstract

The IB Curriculum, which was initially founded in Switzerland, is used globally. Many schools in Indonesia also apply this curriculum, and the number keeps growing. This paper will present the results of a study aiming to investigate the ideology, model, and elements of the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, specifically the English (Language Acquisition) curriculum for the Middle Year Program (secondary school). The study has been given shape by the theory of curriculum development. The study employed a case study research design, especially text analysis. The results show that the English IB curriculum applies a learner-cantered ideology with collaborative learning to build students’ communicative skills. It also has been influenced by a deductive model proposed by Tyler. Moreover, the elements also confirm Tyler’s rationale, consisting of objectives, the content, learning activities or learning experiences designed to achieve the objectives various types of assessments and evaluations.
