Abstract

Language learners’ environment holds vital contribution to learners’ language development. It provides them with the target language, in this case, English as a Foreign Language, which is usually taken in the form of input and feedback. Learners may choose the feedback variously depending on their proficiency and background. However, prior studies in this area show inconsistent results regarding the effect of learners’ background and proficiency on their preference for feedback.  Hence, this study aimed to explore EFL University students’ preferences for classroom feedback. The data were gained through interviews involving 20 students of the Graduate Program of English Education whose English competencies are mostly upper intermediate to advanced level. This study found that the learners could accommodate all types of given feedbacks and they do not significantly tend to choose particular types of feedback. This implies that learners’ language proficiency and surrounding environment could determine their choice of feedback. As a result, teachers or other language trainers should take their learners’ current language development into account in order to give those appropriate types of feedback.

Abstract

Pronunciation is one of the main keys in mastering speaking English. Without correct pronunciation in speaking English, EFL students can not communicate well and it will be hard for others to understand what they are saying. The study aimed to find out the strategies that English Language Education Program students from Bengkayang used to improve their pronunciation skills at the Faculty of Language and Arts in Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana, Salatiga. The participants of the study were twenty-one (21) students from batch 2019 who had taken the Pronunciation Practice class in Semester 1 of the  2021/2022 academic year. This study was conducted to answer one research question: What are Bengkayang students' strategies to improve their pronunciation skills? The participants were chosen randomly to be the participants because they were all from Bengkayang, a province in Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia. They had various ways of pronouncing words. The researcher used a set of questionnaire questions consisting of close-ended and open-ended questions. Semi-structured interview questions were also used to collect the data from the students. The findings showed that the strategies used by the students were watching online video(s), listening to songs in English, practicing with friends, and using an online application (ELSA). The students were familiar with the strategies used because those strategies were suggested by the teachers in the classroom. The students chose the strategies differently because they came from different places and each place has different strategies to use. Eventually, this study  hopefully provides information for teachers or other students outside Bengkayang who face similar problems.

Abstract

Analysis of the items needs to be done as a repair and refinement of the items. So that the preparation of the questions is in accordance with predetermined indicators which are really shown as their function is as a measuring tool for student learning outcomes. The type of research conducted in this research is descriptive quantitative research. The data analysis technique uses classical theory assisted by Iteman software and the Rasch model with the winstep program. This research is focused on examining the basic concepts of classical theory which are translated into important matters including validity. Reliability, item difficulty level, and item discrimination. The results of the research conducted showed that the quality of the items based on classical theory using the iteman and the Rasch model using the winstep application obtained a reliability value with the classical theory of 0.882 which was generally categorized with high reliability so that it could be said that the questions were reliable, whereas in the analysis using the rasch model obtained results of 0.85 with the reliable category. So it can be concluded that based on the results of the analysis of the questions using classical theory and the Rasch model, the questions are said to be reliable and in a good category.

This qualitative study aims at exploring the female and male EFL student teachers’ reflection of their teachng practice in microteaching regarding the level and the theme of reflection. The participants were thirty-four sixth semester students enrolling in microteaching course at English Education Department of  a private university in Indonesia. Those EFL student teachers were required to write reflection journal after attending their peers’ teaching practice. The teaching practices were recorded and shared to the students so that they could watch them again out of the classroom before writing their reflection. The result of the study indicates that the female and male EFL student teachers vary in their different level of reflection in microteaching. They also differ in the theme of reflection, in which the female EFL student teachers reflected more themes of teaching practice than their male peers.
