Abstract

This study investigated the efficacy of using movies as enrichment tools for enhancing vocabulary acquisition in seventh-grade students at SMP Kanisius Gayam Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Employing a quasi-experimental design with two classes, data from 30 students were gathered through pre-test and post-test vocabulary assessments, along with a perception-focused questionnaire. Results revealed a positive student perception of movies as effective enrichment tools. Statistical analyses, including difference tests and gain score calculations, demonstrated a significant enhancement in vocabulary knowledge for both groups. Notably, post-test scores showed no significant difference between the groups, indicating the approach's efficacy across diverse initial vocabulary levels. These findings prove that utilizing movies as enrichment tools can notably boost vocabulary acquisition in seventh-grade students, paving the way for innovative vocabulary learning methods in adolescent education.

Abstract

This study explores students' satisfaction with augmented reality (AR) technology for vocabulary acquisition, focusing on its impact on learner engagement and motivation, as well as the challenges students face. A qualitative approach was employed with five high school students who had experience using AR for vocabulary learning. Data collection involved observations and structured interviews to capture their interactions, perceptions, and satisfaction with AR. The findings reveal that AR enhances engagement and motivation by providing an interactive, immersive, and enjoyable learning experience. Students described AR as gamified and multisensory, which increased their involvement and made learning more appealing. Visualizing vocabulary in real-world contexts improved understanding and sustained interest, while a sense of achievement from progress further boosted motivation. However, challenges included device incompatibility, unstable internet connectivity, and difficulties navigating AR applications due to a steep learning curve and inadequate training. These barriers occasionally hindered effective use and reduced learning efficiency. In conclusion, AR technology shows promise in transforming vocabulary learning through enhanced engagement and motivation. Addressing technical and training-related challenges is critical for optimizing its use in education, offering valuable insights for future implementation.

Abstract

Feedback is crucial in the writing learning process, as it enables students to enhance the quality of their work after receiving input from their teacher. Nonetheless, lecturers do not completely grasp the essence of writing education. This study seeks to explore lecturer' beliefs about teaching writing through feedback, describe how these beliefs are applied in teaching practices, and identify any discrepancies between these beliefs and what occurs in the classroom. This research employs a qualitative methodology through a case study. Data were collected via interviews with teachers and students, along with learning observations, and were then analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative methods through descriptive statistics. The findings of the study suggest that feedback plays a vital role in teaching writing, particularly when complemented by Merdeka curriculum centered on outcome-based learning. The different types of feedback used in learning include written feedback, conferencing, and peer feedback. The roles that lecturers take on include facilitator, provider of feedback, and coordinator. The disparity that arises pertains solely to the lecturer's role in providing feedback, without taking any corrective measures. This research suggests that implementing corrective feedback can enhance students' writing skills.
