Abstract

This study aims to determine the distribution and diversity of macrozoobenthos species in the Barumun River, Kota Pinang District, South Labuhanbatu Regency. The method used is an exploratory method with purposive sampling. The data analyzed were longitudinal distribution, diversity index, evenness index and dominance index. The results showed that there were 15 types of macrozoobenthos with a low diversity index value at all stations. In conclusion, the diversity of macrozoobenthos in the Barumun River is relatively small, so the water quality criteria for this river are categorized as moderately polluted. Abstract

This study aims to develop a mini self-research guidebook based on 4C skills and determine the quality of the guidebook developed based on expert validation and trial results. The method used is RnD (Research & Development) using the ADDIE model. The developed guidebook was then assessed using a questionnaire instrument via google form by media experts, material experts and 28 Biology Education Study Program students. The results showed that the mini self-research guidebook product based on 4C skills was proven valid and feasible. This achievement is indicated by the results of the media expert validation assessment of 91.70% with very good and valid criteria; the material expert 95% with very good and valid criteria; and student responses of 89.02% with very good and valid criteria. In conclusion, the mini self-research guidebook based on 4C skills that were developed is classified as very good and valid and suitable to be used as a source of student self-study. Abstract

This study aims to determine plankton diversity in the Aek Pala River, Labuhanbatu Regency. The method used is descriptive observative. Sampling was done by filtering 10 L of water using a plankton net. The results showed that there were 15 genera of plankton in Aek Pala waters, including 10 types of phytoplankton and 5 types of zooplankton. The most abundant diversity of phytoplankton species found was in the class Chlorophyceae, which was 75% (7 species). In contrast, the highest diversity of zooplankton species is from the class Crustacea (3 species). In addition, the physical and chemical parameters of the waters show that Aek Pala waters are very good for supporting plankton life. In conclusion, the diversity of plankton species obtained included phytoplankton (classes Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Dinophyceae) and zooplankton (classes Crustacea and Rotifera). The abundance of plankton found categorizes that the river waters have moderate fertility. Keywords: Diversity, Plankton, Zooplankton, Phytoplankton and Aek Pala River

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the application of the Guided Inquiry learning model on the Science Process Skills (KPS) of Biology Education students at the University of Jambi in 2017/2018 in the Animal Physiology practicum. The method used is true experiment with Post-Test Only Control Design. The research data was obtained by providing a scientific knowledge test in the form of a post-test and an observation sheet for students' science process skills during practicum activities. The results showed that the average value of KPS in the experimental class was 88.24 and the control class was 68.82 with tcount = 36.20. The average scientific knowledge of the experimental class students is 75.35 and the control class is 70.18 with tcount = 7.49. In conclusion, applying the inquiry model to the improvement of KPS and scientific knowledge of Biology Education students at Jambi University in Animal Physiology practicum is an effect. Abstract

This study aims to determine the water quality of the Aek Pala River in Labuhanbatu Regency. The method used is a survey method with qualitative and quantitative analysis. The results showed that the water of the Aek Pala River was slightly cloudy, odorless and had a TDS level of 164.60 mg/l, pH = 6.85; BOD = 9.08; COD = 20.78; phosphate < 0.003 mg/l; nitrate = 3.04 mg/l; total Coliform = 9.17 CFU/100 ml; and E. coli = 0.03 CFU/100 ml. In conclusion, the physical, chemical and microbiological parameters of the Aek Pala River water are still in the safe category in meeting drinking water quality standards and are worthy of being used as a bathing tourist attraction for people around Labuhanbatu and other areas. Abstract

This study aims to describe the welfare conditions of cats kept in several pet shops in Bengkulu City, especially regarding eating and drinking, health, comfort and contact with other cats. The method used is direct observation (direct survey) and interviews with pet shop owners or servers. The data obtained were analyzed by calculating the percentage of pet shops that pay attention to the welfare of cats and those that do not. The results showed that the cat is eating welfare obtained an average percentage of 83.3%, drinking 66.7%, health 88.9%, comfort 100% and contact with other cats 58.3%. In conclusion, the pet shop in Bengkulu City meets cat welfare standards in aspects of eating, drinking, health, comfort, and contact with other cats. Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using ethanol extract of amethyst fruit as an experimental animal killer (euthanasia) substitute for chloroform. The method used is descriptive and experimental methods. The experimental animals used were crickets, cockroaches and frogs. The results showed that the euthanasia test with a volume of 10 ml on experimental cockroach animals after 30 minutes showed that all cockroaches were dead and the LC50 was obtained at a volume of 5.44 ml with intervals of 4.59 to 6.24 ml. In experimental animals, crickets after 20 minutes showed that at 10 ml, almost all crickets died and the LC50 was obtained at a volume of 5.57 ml with intervals of 3.83 to 6.69 ml. As for the experimental frogs, after 20 minutes, all frogs died from the smallest extract volume, which was 2 ml. In conclusion, amethyst fruit extract can be used as an alternative to chloroform for euthanasia of experimental animals in practicum, it's just that the volume of extract used is more than using chloroform. Abstract

This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity and the effect of the combination of methanol extract of the leaves of Chinese ketepeng (Cassia alata Linn.) with six selected plant extracts against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The method used is well diffusion and paper tape method. The concentration of the test extract was 100 mg/mL (1:1), DMSO 50% v/v was used as a negative control and the antibiotic clindamycin as a positive control. The results showed that most of the combinations of the methanol extract of the Chinese ketepeng leaf (C. alata) with the six selected plant extracts produced an average diameter of the inhibition zone, which was greater than the average diameter of the inhibition zone of every single extract. However, the average diameter of the combined inhibition zones was not more significant than the sum of the average diameters of the inhibition zones of every single extract. In conclusion, the combination of the methanol extract of the Chinese ketepeng leaf (C. alata) with six selected plant extracts had additive/indifferent effects in inhibiting the growth of S. aureus. Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' science process skills through online assessments using the Rasch model analysis. The method used is quantitative through the analysis of the Rasch model. The data was collected using an online assessment with a test technique based on basic science process skills. The results showed that as many as 21 students (43.75%) had a KPS above or equal to the class average KPS and 12 students (25%) had high abilities in all aspects of basic KPS. In addition, as many as 27 students (56.25%) still have abilities below the class average and 15 (31.25%) still have abilities below the average test difficulty level. However, it can also be seen that 33 other students (68.75%) have a KPS ability above the average level of test difficulty. In conclusion, some basic process skills that need to be improved in students are observing, measuring, communicating and predicting skills.
