Abstract The importance of writing has become a primary concern in teaching English as a foreign language. The skill of writing enables learners to generate ideas into certain organisation and awareness once the process of writing is undertaken. From writing, learners are also expected to be able to construct and use the language more accurately because they have enough time to think compared to have an oral activity. However, such an ideal situation can hardly be manifested due to particular problems faced by learners. This present study aims at investigating the struggling points of writing construction done by students. There were fourteen students who were purposefully selected as the subject of this study. In order to gather the supporting data, the researcher employs document study and direct observation. This study is expected to give contribution to help teachers confirming common problems faced by students during learning writing. Nevertheless, it also contributes to other prospective studies which are on the same interest with this present one. Keywords : Assessing Writing, Writing Problems, Writing Construction

Writing in English is important for vocational high school (SMK) students toprepare their future career so that they can compete with other job seekers bothin Indonesia and other countries. However, the students find that writing isdifficult to learn due to some cases: (1) they are less interested in it because it isnot correlated with their major, (2) the limited time availability (3) the teachinglearning process is less meaningful, and (4) they are lack of feedback due to thebig number of students in one class. To overcome this problem, it is advisableto apply what so called integrated project based learning (PBL) by integratingwriting to recount the project dealing with the students’ major. This paperdescribes how the integrated PBL can enhance the students’ writing skill throughtwo main stages: (1) preparation stage. It is embodying grouping, determiningthe project work, determining the schedule, and learning the content as wellas how to write a recount text in the classroom. (2) individual writing activitywhich covers (a) free writing; (b) drafting; (c) evaluating (peer reviewing andteacher learner conference); (d) revising; (e) post writing; (f) publishing in asocial media; and (g) responding the social media reader’s comment.

The data analysis used is t-test using SPSS version 16. The result of data analysis shows that p value is 0.016. The score is lower than 0.05. Seeing the result we can say that the null hypothesis (Ho) saying that there is no effect of using Communicative Language Teaching on speaking ability is rejected. It means that there is effect of using Communicative Language Teaching on the students’ speaking ability. Keywords: Communicative Language Teaching method, speaking ability.

The value is lower than significances level of 5% which means thatNull Hypothesis (H0) is rejected. So, Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using ThreeStepInterview on Students Writing Achievement at MTs Baitul Hikmah in 2017/2018 academic year.

Writing skill is one of the English skills which is often regarded as somethingdifficult to master. Students tend to have less attention to this skill. Even worse, some teachers also often lack of attention to it since it requires more time to checkthe students work on writing. Consequently, the students’ writing competenceis difficult to increase. To overcome the problem, the possible alternative theteacher can use is using Project Based Learning since the approach seems to beeffective to improve the students’ writing competence. The other aspect that can possibly influence the writing competence is Motivation Achievement. The kind of research used is experimental research with nonrandomizedcontrol group pretest posttest design. The data analysis used is t-test usingSPSS version 21. The result of the research shows that Project Based Learninginfluences the students’ writing ability, while Achievement Motivation has nosignificant impact on the students’ writing ability.

EFL Learners’ distress in listening to English records in the classroom is one of the matters commonly discovered in Indonesian middle scholars. Listening activities bring students to the mastery of other skills; speaking, writing, and reading. Total Physical Response was created to enhance the students’ ability in listening to a spoken foreign language discourse by giving a physical response when they hear aparticular command. This study works toward finding the effect of Total Physical Response utilization on students’ listening comprehension at MTs Negeri 4 Banyuwangi. The samples of this study were two groups of students; 30 students of VII A and 30 students of VII B. Class VII B was assigned as the control group, while Class VII A as the experimental group where both pre-test and post-test were conducted to each group. The experimental group was taught by using TPR, while in the control group learning is carried out in the way teachers normally teach, that is using Three-phase technique. The hypothesis was tested using independent sample t-test and analyzed by using SPSS. Total Physical Response could administer some refinement on students’ listening, which is evidently manifested in the result of the post-test. Students in experiment group achieved better score than those in control group. This study suggests the use of Total Physical Response to the early middle scholars as an alternative to other teaching methods.

Bali is known as a tourist destination which is always filled with tourists, both domestic and foreigners. Besides being famous for its culture, the beach is one of the main attractions for tourists. Berawa Beach is one that is always crowded with foreign tourists because it has large waves which are great for surfing and also to enjoy the beautiful sunset. This phenomenon provides opportunities for local people as a source of income by becoming food and beverage sellers around Berawa beach. This encourages local people to use English when they transact with foreign tourists. Practically, the English language used by traders is practical English with transactional functions. This study aims to describe the ability of English use by food and beverage traders in Berawa Beach, Tibubeneng village, North Kuta District, Badung Regency in terms of the speaking aspect. In order to determine the traders speaking ability, the researcher uses scoring rubric descriptions that contain several aspects such as, grammar, pronunciation, fluency, and vocabulary. Data is collected through several instruments such as interviews, direct observation, and field notes. The results of this study can be used as input for stakeholders of Tibubeneng Village to determine the steps in improving the English language skills of food and beverage traders who ultimately can contribute positively to Badung Regency in advancing the tourism industry while introducing various kinds of local culinary.

This research explores how English is used in the expanding circle: tourism areas in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Although Bahasa Indonesia is the official language used, this does not mean that other languages will have a little share in the linguistic landscape. The total data used were 519 signboards which were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. This research found that in monolingual boards, the use of English was 23.7%, and Indonesian was 73.5%. The magnitude of the use of English, which is close to as salient as the use of Bahasa Indonesia, is particularly shown on the bilingual and multilingual signboards. This study highlights discussion on the representation of power of English in the investigated signboards, which was shown from the number of appearance and combination of English and other languages in the signboards. It is revealed that English is expressed not only for informative reasons but also for symbolic reasons such as indexing sophistication, cosmopolitanism, and fashionable appearance.
