Abstract

The focus of teaching English as a foreign language has primarily revolved around the importance of speaking skills. However, it has been observed that many students face challenges in improving their ability to speak. These challenges can be categorized into five main issues: linguistic aspects, psychological aspects, teaching strategies employed by teachers, inadequate media resources, and students' speaking performance. In light of these issues, the researcher proposed stick puppets as an alternative media that aligns well with the targeted aspects and strategies for improvement. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) to enhance the speaking skills of seventh-grade students in SMPN 1 Bantaran during the academic year 2021/2022. Collaborative classroom action research was conducted, consisting of a single cycle spanning three meetings and one post-test. Data collection techniques included a speaking test to assess students' speaking scores, as well as teacher's field notes, interviews, students' questionnaires, and classroom observation sheets as secondary data. After implementing stick puppets as a media tool, the research findings revealed a significant improvement in the speaking skills of seventh-grade students. Out of 22 students, 95.65% achieved the minimum passing score, and the mean score increased from 16.08 in the preliminary speaking test to 90.86. The data indicated that the utilization of stick puppets contributed to enhancing students' vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and content in speaking. Additionally, stick puppets fostered increased participation and engagement among students in the classroom. Students displayed interest, motivation, and confidence, particularly when describing physical appearances using stick puppets.

The participants of this study were seventy-five tutors who teach EYL encountered online English courses in Pare. The researchers employed a descriptive quantitative approach. The data was collected through a questionnaire that consisted of 21 items and three open-ended questions. The data were analyzed by using the Likert scale. The findings of this research show that electricity failure and poor internet connectivity become crucial challenges. The students that are assisted by their parents also make tutors seem challenged in teaching EYL. Irregularly, the students feel bored in learning English through online. Although some tutors never join any workshop on Teaching English for Young Learners, they are good at giving guidance to teach young learners.

Abstract

The pervasive use of English has a significant effect on language development. It has demonstrated that English is crucial in many facets of contemporary life, including commerce, the economy, politics, and tourism, notably in education. Code-switching is a teaching method that provides explanations and tools for students with limited English skills. The short duration of the English specialization class encourages the teacher to code-switch so that students can receive and understand the material well. This study aims to analyze the types and reasons for code-switching used by teachers in teaching English as a foreign language in Islamic boarding schools. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study were teachers who taught English specialization classes at one of the boarding schools in Sidoarjo, Indonesia. Data collection was carried out through observation and interview techniques. Research data were analyzed using analytical methods. This study’s results indicate three types of data on the use of code-switching by teachers: tag-switching, intra-sentential switching, and between-sentence switching. The reasons teachers use it in the learning process in the classroom are four types: facilitating learning, getting good feedback from students, making the classroom atmosphere more interactive, and establishing good relationships with students. This research found that using code-switching to deliver learning can positively impact teachers and students in the classroom

Abstract

One of the human attributes is the ability to process language.  Over the last few decades, we have learned a lot more about its neurological foundation that specific linguistic functions are believed to be supported by various brain’s sections in left and right hemispheres. However, studies have shown that language comprehension and grammar depend on other areas of the brain outside the so-called Broca's region, which corresponds to Brodmann areas 44 and 45. It has been linked to an expanded brain activity including BA44, BA45, and BA47, the anterior insula (BA13), the mesial part of the supplementary motor area (the lateral expansion of BA6), and the bottom layer of the forebrain. Studies have also exposed the brain’s memory systems in language learning, storage, and usage, which are called as declarative/procedural memory systems. Further, studies have unveiled that these declarative/procedural memory systems can be enhanced through interventions. Thus, understanding these issues is advantageous for language teachers/instructors to know how the brain works in learning a language and its grammar, which is vital to have effective teaching and learning. Such understanding may lead teachers to develop their syllabus and materials, select strategies and methods, and design various class activities that result in effective learning.

Abstract

From 2020 to early 2022, most education systems globally were required to be directed remotely due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. This global phenomenon also forced the Indonesian government to take action by closing all schools and reorganizing the curriculum: the basic competencies taught were reduced but still emphasized higher-order thinking skills. In response to the sudden policy adjustment, teachers are challenged to design innovative and creative teaching and learning activities that could be conducted remotely.  While many available studies have conceptualized Bloom’s theory from traditional classroom teaching, this study attempts to draw Bloom’s frameworks during the unusual online teaching because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The objective of the study is to investigate how two Indonesian English teachers reported their experiences with applying Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy (BDT) while teaching remotely. The research design was a qualitative case study. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analyses. BDT was used as the theoretical framework. The findings show that teachers emphasized more on the task-based language teaching method more than lecturing via Zoom. Teacher-centered learning activities were identified in the LOTS (lower-order thinking skills) stages, while student-centered learning activities were reflected during the HOTS (higher-order thinking skills) stages.

An educational process must be able to analyze and meet the learning needs of each student. Differentiated learning is an educator's effort to adjust learning activities in the classroom to fulfill the learning needs of students related to readiness to receive new material, students' interests and learning profiles or learning styles of diverse students. Differentiated learning can be done by 1) content differentiation; 2) process differentiation; and 3) product differentiation; The integration of local wisdom in learning gives a real picture to students so students can understand material concepts more easily. This research is qualitative research using a phenomenology approach with data collection methods using observation, interviews and questionnaires where the data subjects were 20 high school and vocational high school English teachers in Batang Regency who applied differentiation learning. According to the results of the research conducted, it was found that 12 teachers applied content differentiation, 14 applied process differentiation, 15 applied product differentiation, and among these results some teachers applied a combination of differentiation in their learning.

Abstract

This study focuses on the novel Beauty is a Wound, which was originally translated by Annie Tucker from the Indonesian novel Eka Kurniawan's Cantik Itu Luka (2002). This study was conducted to identify and analyze instances of gender inequality in "Beauty is a Wound." This study aims to: 1) identify the forms of gender inequality portrayed by women in Beauty is a Wound; and 2) the meaning behind inequality. The qualitative descriptive approach was adopted in this investigation. Mansour Fakih's (2013) idea is being utilized by researchers. The findings revealed that women face four categories of gender inequality: subordination (four), marginalization (six), violence (25), and stereotyping (five). In this study, the meaning of inequality is that (1) women's characters do not provide the same rights as other children to get education, study, and socialize; (2) prisoners appear helpless and do not have the right to manage their own lives, which results in marginalization; (3) they were subjected to poor treatment at the hands of Japanese soldiers, which resulted in both physical and psychological injuries, which led to the claim that it was violence; and (4) the assumption that they were vile individuals.
