Abstract

This study critically examines Muhammad Abduh’s concept of humanistic education (al-tarbiyah al-insāniyyah) and its philosophical relevance to strengthening Islamic character education amid the moral and ethical crises of the digital era. The research is motivated by increasing challenges such as digital alienation, misinformation, and spiritual disengagement that accompany technological disruption and moral decline in modern education. Using a qualitative library research approach, this study systematically analyzes Abduh’s primary works Risālat al-Tauḥīd and Tafsīr al-Manār and synthesizes them with contemporary Islamic educational literature published within the last five years. The data were interpreted through content and hermeneutic analysis to uncover the underlying philosophical principles of Abduh’s thought and to relate them to contemporary digital learning challenges and ethical dilemmas. The findings indicate that Abduh’s humanistic framework, rooted in theocentric rationalism, is built upon three interrelated pillars: rationality and freedom of thought (‘aql), the integration of knowledge and morality (‘ilm wa akhlāq), and social-spiritual responsibility (mas’uliyyah ijtimā‘iyyah wa rūhiyyah). The study concludes that Abduh’s theocentric humanism provides a solid philosophical foundation for constructing an adaptive, ethical, and human-centered paradigm of Islamic character education capable of responding to the global moral challenges of the digital age.

Abstract

This article aims to map the direction, trends, and relevance of the Islamic educational philosophy of Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) and Nurcholish Madjid (Cak Nur) in the context of contemporary education through a bibliometric approach. Both figures are influential Indonesian Muslim intellectuals who have made significant contributions to developing an inclusive, humanistic, and democratic paradigm of Islamic education. This study employs bibliometric analysis of scholarly publications related to the thoughts of Gus Dur and Cak Nur from academic databases over the past one decade, complemented by a conceptual literature review. The mapping results indicate that Gus Dur’s ideas emphasize pluralism, humanism, and education grounded in humanitarian values, while Cak Nur focuses on rationality, modernization, and openness to science and culture. The dialectic between their ideas reveals a convergence in viewing Islamic education as a means of liberation, empowerment, and the development of a civil society, although with different emphases: Gus Dur prioritizes socio-cultural praxis, whereas Cak Nur highlights epistemological rationality. The integration of their philosophical perspectives remains relevant for shaping the future direction of Islamic education in the era of globalization, which demands openness, tolerance, and innovation, while remaining rooted in Islamic and universal human values. Abstract

This study examines the shift from traditional Sufism to urban Sufism in the context of a sub-urban corporation, with a focus on PT Mayangkara Group in Blitar. The research found that the implementation of spiritual values in this company occurred through seven phases, starting from the informal introduction of religious values in the 1970s to the formation of a more structured spiritual habitus in 2015. These phases demonstrate the company's efforts in integrating Islamic values, such as discipline, honesty, trustworthiness and responsibility, in various operational aspects, including recruitment, selection, training and compensation. The research also highlights the application of normative values, such as the teachings of the Qur'an and Hadith, as well as the philosophy of Pancasila, which encourage a balance between worldly performance and spirituality. The results show that the synergy between spiritual values and work ethic creates a harmonious and productive work environment. In building the synergy of spiritual values and work ethic values through human resources, five patterns of habitus formation were found in the company environment. Among them are recruitment, selection, performance appraisal, training and development, and compensation. The program focuses on the balance between worldly and afterlife life, in accordance with the company's vision: "Healthy for Health, Prosperous for Welfare, and Benefiting the World and the Hereafter."

Abstract

This article aims to analyze Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas's thoughts on the integration of religion and science and its relevance to the development of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in the modern era. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature review approach, with primary sources in the form of al-Attas' works, such as Islam and Secularism and Prolegomena to the Metaphysics of Islam, as well as secondary sources in the form of related journal articles and books. The results of the study show that al-Attas emphasizes three main concepts in the integration of science, namely the Islamization of science, the Islamic worldview as an epistemological foundation, and the importance of adab and ta’dib in education. Further discussion reveals that al-Attas's thoughts are able to offer a critical Islamic epistemological reconstruction of secularism and scientism, while providing a new direction for the PAI curriculum and learning strategies. The conclusion of the study affirms that al-Attas' paradigm is relevant for building holistic Islamic education, integrating the intellectual, moral, and spiritual aspects of students, and opening opportunities for further research in the field of curriculum and integrative learning practices

Abstract

The rise of digital technology has transformed how Muslims engage with religious discourse. Social media has become a contested space between Islamic moderation—emphasizing balance and tolerance—and transnational movements promoting purification and the caliphate. This article analyzes the role of Islamic moderation as a counter-narrative to transnational ideology within the digital sphere. Using a qualitative library research method, it examines academic literature and religious policy documents. Findings reveal that Salafism utilizes social media to construct an exclusive form of religious authority, whereas Islamic moderation reinforces al-wasathiyyah values through ethical and inclusive digital literacy. The study highlights the importance of synergy between the state, religious institutions, and society in strengthening digital moderation to preserve Indonesia’s peaceful and rahmatan lil-‘alamin Islamic identity. Abstract

Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah are the two largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia and the primary global representations of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah Islam. Although both belong to the Sunni branch of Islam, they differ in ideology and organizational orientation. NU represents traditional Islam that accommodates the acculturation of religion and culture, while Muhammadiyah depicts a modern-urban Islam that tends to draw a line between religious and cultural dimensions. Regarding nationalism, both organizations share a strong commitment to nationalism, but NU's expression of patriotism is considered more prominent than Muhammadiyah's. These differences are influenced by the social background of its members, their scientific genealogy, and their respective conceptions of the relationship between religion and state. This research uses a literature study approach with a descriptive-qualitative method, namely collecting, reviewing, and interpreting primary and secondary sources related to the history, ideology, and religious discourse of both organizations. The analysis is conducted through thematic reading and comparison of key concepts regarding nationalism in each organization. The research results show that NU and Muhammadiyah are both committed to strengthening Indonesian national identity, but have different styles of expression and patriotic orientations. NU is more prominent in the symbolic-cultural articulation of nationalism, while Muhammadiyah emphasizes a rational-modern approach to national contribution. This difference indicates that the two complement each other in building an inclusive Indonesian nationalism rooted in religious tradition.

Abstract

This article examines the role of surau education in shaping Buya Hamka's inclusive and tolerant attitude towards local Minangkabau traditions. Departing from the agenda of religious moderation and the importance of local wisdom, this study highlights a gap in research that has so far mostly discussed Hamka's moderation or Minangkabau surau separately. The study uses a qualitative approach with a literature study, combining historical-sociological and biographical-intellectual analysis of Hamka's educational journey, as well as content analysis of his works related to customs and Qur'anic interpretation. The results show, first, that Minangkabau surau education, including during its transformation into a madrasah, produced a configuration of monotheistic values, Sufism, morals, deliberation, and a balance between religion and custom that aligns with the concept of wasathiyah. Second, Hamka's attitude towards local traditions is both inclusive and exclusive: he embraced customs as a source of moral wisdom, but firmly committed to practices that violated justice and monotheism. Third, the values and pedagogical mechanisms of the surau act as a foundation and “ethical anchor” that enable Hamka to combine intellectual openness with respect for local traditions, while also offering a conceptual model for the development of local wisdom-based Islamic education in contemporary Indonesia

Abstract

This article examines the rise of epistemological relativism that emerges from the loss of authority and trust in the notion of absolute truth. The phenomenon of same-sex marriage has become a controversial issue in society, influenced by Michel Foucault’s concept of truth and power, which views truth as a subjective construct shaped by power relations. Same-sex marriage operates within legal and political systems that are not universally accepted across all countries, cultures, or religions. Dewesternization arises as an effort to restore the Islamic worldview as the primary framework for understanding knowledge, reality, and life. The research method employed is library research using an epistemological and philosophical approach, accompanied by a comparative analysis between the thoughts of Michel Foucault and Muhammad Naquib al-Attas. The main reference used in this study is Muhammad Naquib al-Attas’s book Islam and Secularism. The purpose of this study is to analyze the root problems of epistemological relativism that influence human perceptions of truth and to propose an alternative solution through the revitalization of M. Naquib al-Attas’s tawhidi epistemology as a foundation for strengthening absolute and divine truth. The findings reveal that the revitalization of tawhidi epistemology can restore the unity between intellect and soul within the framework of divine oneness. Therefore, this study emphasizes the urgency of reconstructing the Islamic knowledge paradigm to counter cultural relativism and the ongoing moral crisis in the post-truth era.
