Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of Duolingo on students' vocabulary mastery and writing competence, as well as the simultaneous effect on both. The population of this study was 8th-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Singaraja in the academic year 2022/2023, totaling 329 students. The sample of this study involved 67 students, consisting of 34 students in the experimental group and 33 students in the control group. Multistage sampling was used as a sampling technique. Data were collected through a post-test covering writing competency tests and vocabulary tests. The data were analyzed using one-way MANOVA through the SPSS 22.0 application. The results showed that 1) there was a simultaneous effect of using Duolingo on students' vocabulary mastery and writing competence; 2) students who were taught using Duolingo showed better vocabulary mastery than those who were taught using conventional media; and 3) students who were taught using Duolingo showed better writing competence than those who were taught using conventional media. Thus, this study indicates that Duolingo enables students to acquire new vocabulary and master it so that their writing competence increases and motivates students to learn English in a fun way.

Abstract

The “Chinese Made Easy” textbook is one of the widely used textbook in learning Mandarin at secondary school in West Java. Apart from the high level of use, this textbook remain has disadvantages, particularly on the aspect of  exercises. This research analyzes and evaluates Chinese listening and speaking skills exercises in “Chinese Made Easy I 2nd Edition” textbook. The purposes of this research were to analyze the suitability of the exercises in the “Chinese Made Easy I 2nd Edition” textbook with the indicators for evaluating exercises designed by Li Quan, as well as to describe its advantages and disadvantages. This research uses a content analysis method with a qualitative approach. Researchers mapped the listening and speaking exercise in “Chinese Made Easy I 2nd Edition” textbook  as data. Data analysis of exercise evaluation indicators is categorized into aspects of learning material coverage, aspects of the number and variety of types of exercises, aspects of levels of difficulty and relevance between exercises, and aspects of motivational function. The results indicate that the exercises in “Chinese Made Easy I 2nd Edition” textbook are quite compatible with the indicators for evaluating exercises. This textbook has exercises that are in accordance to the learning materials, variative, gradual, and can encourage students on developing their listening and speaking skills in Mandarin, yet it has disadvantages in the aspect of the amount and variety of listening exercises. Keywords: Exercises, listening skills, speaking skills, textbook, Chinese Made Easy.   Abstrak Buku “Chinese Made Easy” merupakan salah satu buku ajar yang banyak digunakan dalam pembelajaran bahasa Mandarin tingkat SMP/SMA di Jawa Barat. Terlepas dari tingkat penggunaan yang tinggi, buku ini masih memiliki kekurangan, terutama dalam aspek latihan. Penelitian ini menganalisis dan mengevaluasi latihan keterampilan menyimak dan berbicara bahasa Mandarin pada buku “Chinese Made Easy I Edisi Kedua”. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis kesesuaian antara latihan pada buku “Chinese Made Easy I Edisi Kedua” dengan indikator evaluasi latihan yang dirancang oleh Li Quan, serta untuk memaparkan kelebihan dan kekurangan dari latihan buku tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis isi dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Peneliti melakukan pemetaan terhadap soal latihan menyimak dan berbicara buku “Chinese Made Easy I Edisi Kedua” sebagai data. Analisis data terhadap indikator evaluasi latihan dikategorikan ke dalam aspek cakupan materi pembelajaran, aspek jumlah dan variasi jenis latihan, aspek tahapan tingkat kesulitan dan relevansi antarlatihan, serta aspek fungsi motivasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa soal latihan pada buku “Chinese Made Easy I Edisi Kedua” sudah cukup sesuai dengan indikator evaluasi latihan. Buku ini memiliki latihan yang sesuai materi, variatif, bertahap, dan dapat mendorong siswa untuk berlatih mengembangkan keterampilan menyimak dan berbicara bahasa Mandarin, namun memiliki kekurangan dalam aspek jumlah dan variasi latihan menyimak.

Abstract

Focus of this study is to describe the results of the application of the method carried out by DSJ-FS-UM students while writing Märchen. This research is a descriptive research using a qualitative approach. Data sources in this study are five students of the german language students DSJ-FS-UM 2020 along with their essays. There are two data, namely words, phrases, or sentences in the student's essay that have difference with model text and student’s responses. Datas were collected by researchers who acted as human Instrument with supporting instruments, namely assignment sheets and questionnaire sheets.  The results show that the students are able to tell the introduction of the character and the result of the problem by using the KIS method. The students can tell these two parts in their own way, although there are similarities with the model text so that creative and imitative are reflected in students’s essays. However, outside of these two parts, the use of KIS method could not be found in the students' essays, because the students only use their creativity without the use of imitative aspect. Keywords : Kreativ-Imitatives Schreiben method, creative writing, Märchen, folktale.   Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan hasil penerapan metode Kreativ-Imitatives Schreiben (KIS) yang dilakukan oleh mahasiswa DSJ-FS-UM ketika menulis karangan berupa Märchen. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah lima mahasiswa Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Jerman DSJ-FS-UM angkatan 2020 beserta teks karangannya. Dalam penelitian ini terdapat dua data, yaitu kata, frasa, atau kalimat dalam teks karangan mahasiswa yang memiliki perbedaan dengan teks model dan data pendukung berupa respons mahasiswa. Data tersebut dikumpulkan oleh peneliti yang bertindak sebagai human instrument dengan bantuan instrumen penelitian, yaitu tes tulis dan kuesioner. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa dapat menceritakan bagian pengenalan tokoh dan akibat dari munculnya masalah dengan menggunakan metode KIS.  Para mahasiswa dapat menceritakan kedua bagian tersebut dengan cara mereka sendiri, meskipun di dalamnya terdapat kesamaan dengan teks model sehingga unsur kreatif dan imitatif tercermin dalam teksnya. Namun, di luar dua bagian tersebut tidak ditemukan penggunaan metode KIS dalam teks karangan mahasiswa, karena para mahasiswa hanya menggunakan kreativitasnya saja tanpa adanya penggunaan unsur peniruan.

Abstract

The fashion industry is one of the biggest pollutant contributors to environmental pollution in the world today; therefore, fashion industry activists are doing various things to reduce the high number of environmental pollutions, one of which is the sustainable fashion movement. With this in mind, the utilization of patchwork waste in children's clothing is one of the solutions to reducing patchwork waste to a small form. This study aims to explain the process of creating fashion products, the types of fashion products produced, and the meaning contained in the products. By making observations, documentation, and literature studies as data collection methods to obtain inspiration and the creation method as stated by Alma Hawkins, namely exploration, improvisation, and formation, After conducting a study, it was found that the determination of the concept according to the character of the children was then followed by collecting patchwork according to the predetermined color board until it was included in the production process. The products produced are clothing for boys and girls using patchwork textile manipulation and quilting sewing techniques. This fashion product depicts children who are cheerful, active, and creative, supported by detailed textile manipulation combined with quilting sewing techniques. The conclusion is that by utilizing the remaining fabrics that are different, the resulting clothes still look contemporary for children. Besides that, using leftover fabrics also requires accuracy in determining the feasibility of the patchwork to be used. The suitability of raw materials affects the quality of products that will be used by children who are known to have more sensitive skin. Keywords: fashion waste, sustainable, patchwork, children's clothing.   Abstrak  Industri fashion merupakan salah satu penyumbang polutan terbesar atas terjadinya pencemaran lingkungan di dunia saat ini, oleh sebab itu para penggiat industri fashion melakukan berbagai macam cara untuk menekan angka pencemaran lingkungan yang cukup tinggi salah satunya adalah dengan gerakan sustainable fashion. Dengan adanya hal tersebut pemanfaatan limbah perca kain ke dalam busana anak ini menjadi salah satu solusi dalam mengurangi limbah perca hingga dalam bentuk yang kecil. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan proses penciptaan produk fashion, jenis produk fashion yang dihasilkan dan makna yang terkandung di dalam produk. Dengan melakukan observasi, studi dokumentasi dan kepustakaan sebagai metode pengumpulan data maka diperoleh inspirasi dan metode penciptaan yang diutarakan oleh Alma Hawkins yaitu eksplorasi, improvisasi dan pembentukan. Setelah melakukan sebuah penelitian didapatkan hasil bahwa penentuan konsep yang sesuai dengan karakter anak-anak kemudian dilanjutkan dengan pengumpulan perca kain yang sesuai dengan papan warna yang telah ditentukan hingga masuk dalam proses produksi. Produk yang dihasilkan berupa busana anak laki-laki dan perempuan dengan menggunakan manipulasi tekstil patchwork dan teknik jahit quilting. Produk fashion ini menggambarkan anak-anak yang ceria, aktif dan kreatif didukung dengan detail manipulasi tekstil yang dipadukan dengan teknik jahit quilting. Kesimpulannya adalah dengan memanfaatkan sisa kain yang biasanya berakhir menjadi limbah dapat menghasilkan busana dengan desain yang unik serta aman digunakan anak-anak. Menggunakan bahan sisa kain juga memerlukan ketelitian dalam menentukan kelayakan perca yang akan digunakan. Kelayakan bahan baku berpengaruh pada kulitas produk yang nantinya digunakan oleh anak-anak yang diketahui memiliki kulit lebih sensitif.

Abstract

Speaking proficiency is a crucial aspect of language learning, particularly in foreign languages like Japanese. However, both teachers and learners face numerous challenges in enhancing this skill. This research aims to examine the use of video presentations in improving Japanese language learners' speaking abilities. The problems encountered include a lack of interest, difficulties in objectively assessing progress, and challenges in devising effective methods and materials. On the learners' side, challenges include low self-confidence, public speaking anxiety, limited vocabulary, and difficulties in expressing ideas clearly. The methodology employed in this study is a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods. Data were collected through feedback, teacher evaluations, and interviews with fourth-semester students of the Japanese Language D-3 Program at UNTAG Semarang.The research findings indicate that the use of video presentations is effective in enhancing students' speaking abilities. Students reported increased confidence and speaking skills after using video presentations. They also demonstrated improvements in organizing ideas, selecting appropriate vocabulary, and delivering information clearly and coherently. Students generally responded positively to the use of these presentation tasks. Evaluations also showed that video presentations provide relevant and beneficial contexts for developing Japanese language skills, including vocabulary expansion, pronunciation, and fluency. In conclusion, the use of video presentations in Japanese language learning is effective in improving students' speaking abilities. Recommendations can be made to further develop and refine this method in a broader learning context. Keywords : Video presentation, video, speaking skills, Japanese.   Abstrak Kemampuan berbicara adalah aspek penting dalam pembelajaran bahasa, terutama bahasa asing seperti bahasa Jepang. Namun, banyak tantangan yang dihadapi baik oleh pengajar maupun pembelajar dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara ini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji penggunaan video presentasi dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara mahasiswa bahasa Jepang. Permasalahan yang dihadapi adalah kurangnya minat, kesulitan menilai kemajuan secara objektif, dan kesulitan menyusun metode dan materi yang efektif. Di sisi pembelajar, tantangan meliputi kurangnya percaya diri, kecemasan berbicara di depan umum, keterbatasan kosakata, dan kesulitan menyampaikan ide dengan jelas. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah mix method, yaitu campuran antara kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan melalui umpan balik, evaluasi pengajar, dan wawancara terhadap mahasiswa semester empat Program Studi D-3 Bahasa Jepang di UNTAG Semarang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan video presentasi efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara mahasiswa. Mahasiswa melaporkan peningkatan percaya diri dan keterampilan berbicara setelah menggunakan video presentasi. Mereka juga menunjukkan peningkatan dalam mengorganisir ide, memilih kosakata yang tepat, dan menyampaikan informasi dengan jelas dan terstruktur. Respon mahasiswa terhadap penggunaan tugas presentasi ini secara umum positif. Evaluasi juga menunjukkan bahwa video presentasi memberikan konteks yang relevan dan bermanfaat dalam mengembangkan kemampuan bahasa Jepang, termasuk penambahan kosakata, pengucapan, dan kelancaran berbicara. Kesimpulannya, penggunaan video presentasi dalam pembelajaran bahasa Jepang efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara mahasiswa. Rekomendasi dapat diberikan untuk terus mengembangkan dan memperbaiki metode ini dalam konteks pembelajaran yang lebih luas.

Abstract

Kanji learning is difficult if the teaching medium used is not interesting and relevant to technological advances. This research aims to describe the stages in developing middle-level Kanji teaching media with the help of Instagram social media to increase students' interest in learning middle-level Kanji. The research subjects were students studying Kanji in the third semester of the Japanese Language Education Study Program at FKIP, Riau University. The method used in this development research is the ADDIE model, which consists of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. In this research, development was only carried out until the teaching media design stage. Teaching materials for 45 intermediate-level kanji were uploaded to an Instagram account. Each post contains one kanji accompanied by a mnemonic illustration, the meaning of the kanji, how to read onyomi, how to read kunyomi, a video of the writing sequence, and is equipped with examples of vocabulary and the application of the kanji in simple sentences. The results of the development of teaching media in this research were: 1) analysis found that the average score of students was low because the teaching media was less interesting and difficult to remember. 2) produce an Instagram-based teaching media design containing illustrations and video tutorials related to Kanji teaching with interesting visualizations. The conclusion of the research is that the presence of interesting visual-based teaching media and the help of social media such as Instagram are needed to increase understanding of intermediate-level Kanji teaching material. Keywords: Kanji, intermediate level, teaching media, Instagram, development.   Abstrak Pembelajaran Kanji sulit dilakukan jika media ajar yang digunakan kurang menarik dan relevan dengan kemajuan teknologi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan tahap-tahap dalam pengembangan media ajar Kanji level menengah berbantuan media sosial Instagram untuk meningkatkan minat peserta didik dalam pembelajaran Kanji level menengah. Subjek penelitian adalah peserta didik yang menempuh pembelajaran Kanji di semester tiga Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Jepang di FKIP Universitas Riau. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian pengembangan ini adalah model ADDIE yang terdiri dari lima tahapan yaitu analisis (analyze), desain (design), pengembangan (develop), implementasi (implement) dan evaluasi (evaluate). Pada penelitian ini pengembangan baru dilaksanakan hingga tahap desain media ajar. Materi ajar sebanyak 45 Kanji level menengah diunggah ke sebuah akun Instagram. Setiap post memuat satu Kanji dilengkapi dengan ilustrasi mnemonik, makna Kanji, cara baca on’yomi, cara baca kunyomi, video urutan penulisan serta dilengkapi dengan contoh kosakata dan penerapan Kanji tersebut dalam kalimat sederhana. Hasil dari pengembangan media ajar pada penelitian ini adalah 1) ditemukannya analisis bahwa nilai rata-rata peserta didik rendah karena media ajar yang kurang menarik hingga sulit diingat. 2) dihasilkannya desain media ajar berbasis Instagram yang berisi ilustrasi dan video tutorial terkait pengajaran Kanji yang visualisasinya menarik. Simpulan dari penelitian adalah bahwa diperlukan kehadiran media ajar berbasis visual menarik serta bantuan media sosial seperti Instagram untuk meningkatkan pemahaman dengan terhadap materi ajar Kanji level menengah.

Abstract

Kimono is a clothing worn by Japanese people, while Kebaya is the clothing worn by Indonesian people. However, kebaya is only worn by women while kimono can be worn by both men and women. The use of kebaya in Javanese customs and kimono in Japanese customs is not only as a cover, but as a differentiator that contains meaning, philosophy, and function. This research is in the form of qualitative research. Data were taken from various sources, such as books, internet access, and journals that contain theories that support this research. The research aims to find out (1) the meaning, philosophy contained in kimono; (2) the meaning, and philosophy contained in kebaya; (3) whether the function of kimono and kebaya can still be called traditional clothing with various changes caused by present day’s conditions. The philosophy carried in kebaya and kimono is related to the attitude and social strata of the wearer. Kebaya worn together with stagen depicts high patience for the user. The philosophy of kimono focuses on the pattern or motif of the kimono. The philosophy of kimono motifs is more about kindness, longevity, and abundant fortune. These dress cultures can still be referred to as traditional clothing today, as the public always chooses them as appropriate clothing for official occasions.  Keywords: Traditional clothing, kimono kebaya, meaning, philosophy and function.   Abstrak Kimono merupakan pakaian yang dipakai oleh masyarakat Jepang baik perempuan maupun pria, sedangkan Kebaya memiliki arti yang sama, yakni busana yang dikenakan masyarakat  Indonesia, tetapi hanya dikenakan oleh perempuan. Pemakaian kebaya dalam adat Jawa dan kimono dalam adat Jepang bukan hanya sebagai penutup aurat, tetapi sebagai pembeda yang mengandung makna, filosofi, dan fungsi. Penelitian ini berbentuk penelitian kualitatif.  Data diambil dari  berbagai sumber, seperti buku-buku, akses internet, maupun jurnal yang berisi teori-teori yang mendukung penelitian ini. Penelitian  bertujuan untuk mengetahui (1) apa makna, filosofi yang terkandung pada kimono; (2) makna, serta filosofi seperti apa yang terkandung pada kebaya (3) apakah fungsi kimono dan kebaya masih dapat disebut sebagai pakaian tradisional dengan berbagai perubahan yang disebabkan kondisi masa kini. Filosofi yang terkandung dalam kebaya dan kimono berkaitan dengan sikap hingga strata sosial penggunanya. Kebaya yang digunakan bersamaan dengan stagen menggambarkan kesabaran yang tinggi bagi penggunanya. Filosofi yang ada pada kimono, berfokus pada corak atau motif yang ada pada kimono. Filosofi yang ada pada motif kimono lebih pada kebakan, harapan umur panjang, dan rezeki yang melimpah. Kedua budaya berpakaian ini hingga saat ini masih bisa disebut sebagai pakaian tradisional, karena selalu dipilih oleh masyarakat sebagai pakaian yang pantas digunakan untuk acara-acara resmi. Abstract

 Tanjidor has been existed long before Indonesia's independence, during the European colonial period. This art performance has developed in all regions of Indonesia and is gaining popularity among the people. However,  tanjidor is experiencing a decline among the public. Based on this phenomenon, this research was conducted to examine and analyze the problems faced by  tanjidor art in this modern era and the impacts caused by these problems. Through this research, it is hoped that it can open awareness in the community about the importance of maintaining and preserving local culture, such as the  tanjidor performance. Employing a cultural imperialism theory approach, this research found that the existence of  tanjidor performance faces various problems including modernization, foreign cultural influences, and restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic. These problems also have an impact on changes in people's mindsets, a lack of successors, and decreased interest in  tanjidor's performance. Keywords : Challenge, existence, tanjidor, Kalanganyar, modernization   Abstrak Kesenian tanjidor telah ada jauh sebelum negara Indonesia merdeka, tepatnya pada masa penjajahan bangsa Eropa. Kesenian ini mengalami perkembangan di seluruh daerah Indonesia dan mendapatkan popularitas di kalangan masyarakat. Namun, saat ini kesenian ini mengalami penurunan di kalangan masyarakat. Berdasarkan fenomena tersebut, penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengkaji dan menganalisis permasalahan yang dihadapi kesenian tanjidor di masa modern ini serta dampak yang ditimbulkan akibat munculnya permasalahan tersebut. Melalui penelitian ini, diharapkan dapat membuka kesadaran bagi masyarakat akan pentingnya menjaga dan melestarikan budaya lokal, seperti kesenian tanjidor. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan teori imperialisme kultural, hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa eksistensi kesenian  tanjidor di Desa Kalanganyar menghadapi berbagai permasalahan diantaranya modernisasi, pengaruh budaya asing dan pembatasan selama pandemi Covid-19. Permasalahan ini juga berdampak pada perubahan pola pikir masyarakat, minimnya penerus, dan menurunnya minat terhadap kesenian tanjidor.

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the Kanji Memory Hint 2 application on basic kanji abilities in students of the class of 2022 of the Japanese Language Education Study Program, Riau University. The sample used in this study amounted to 37 people who were students of the class of 2022 of the Japanese Language Education Study Program, Riau University. This research is experimental research with a one group pre-test post-test design. Data were collected using tests in the implementation of pre-test and post-test. From the pre-test and post-test data were then analyzed using paired sample t-test. It was found that the paired sample t-test result of 0.000 so that it can be interpreted that the Memory Hint 2 Kanji application is effective for the kanji ability of students of the class of 2022 of the Japanese Language Education Study Program, Riau University. It can be concluded that the Memory Hint 2 Kanji is able to improve student’s ability to memorize the meanings of kanji, read and use kanji Keywords : Effectiveness, app, Kanji Memory Hint 2, kanji skills.   Abstrak Tujuan dilakukannya penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui efektivitas dari aplikasi Kanji Memory Hint 2 terhadap kemampuan kanji tingkat dasar pada mahasiswa angkatan 2022 Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Jepang, Universitas Riau. Sampel yang digunakan pada penelitian ini berjumlah 37 orang yang merupakan mahasiswa angkatan 2022 Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Jepang, Universitas Riau. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen dengan desain one group pre-test post-test. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan tes pada pelaksanaan pre-test dan post-test. dari data pre-test dan post-test tersebut kemudian dianalisis menggunakan uji paired sample t-test. Didapati hasil uji paired sample t-test sebesar 0.000 sehingga dapat ditafsirkan bahwa aplikasi Kanji Memory Hint 2 efektif terhadap kemampuan kanji mahasiswa angkatan 2022 Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Jepang, Universitas Riau. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa aplikasi Kanji Memory Hint 2 mampu untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menghafal makna, membaca dan menggunakan kanji.

Abstract

Roald Dahl’s children’s literature usually depicts children as the protagonist and the grown-ups as the antagonist. This study aims to describe The Grand High Witch’s character as the main antagonist in Roald Dahl’s The Witches (1983). This study employs interactive qualitative analysis by Miles, Huberman and Saldaña which has 3 simultaneous processes; data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing/verifying. These 3 processes are conducted simultaneously in an interactive process which means these processes will be carried repeatedly. In the novel, The Grand High Witch was portrayed as having a scary face which she covered with a mask in order to be beautiful and accepted in society. The Grand High Witch’s cruel and cunning natures were influenced by her hatred towards children. She was portrayed as an antagonist character because her hatred led her to do bad things. Then society will construct a mindset that people only can be a bad person or kind person. Whereas, people are born with multidimensional characters. Thus, these characters could provide insight to children that people in society come with various kinds of traits.
