Abstract

This study aims to analyze the integration of the Adiwiyata Program into Social Studies (IPS) learning as an effort to strengthen students' environmental awareness at SMP Negeri 1 Karanganom. This research is motivated by the importance of developing environmentally conscious character in students through learning integrated with environmental issues. The study used a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. The research informants consisted of the principal, social studies teachers, the Adiwiyata coordinator, and students of SMP Negeri 1 Karanganom. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, with validity testing using source and technique triangulation. The results show that the integration of the Adiwiyata Program into Social Studies learning has been carried out through lesson planning, implementation of teaching and learning activities, and the instilling of environmentally conscious behavior in schools. Teachers integrated environmental values into the Social Studies material through contextual learning activities. The program has resulted in increased students' environmental awareness, although several obstacles remain, such as differences in students' levels of understanding and limited supporting facilities. Thus, the integration of the Adiwiyata Program into Social Studies learning contributes to fostering students' environmental awareness.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of re-examining the da'wah strategies of the Walisongo, which contributed significantly to the Islamization of Java through peaceful, adaptive, and human-centered approaches. One of the most prominent figures in this regard was Sunan Drajat, whose teachings of Catur Piwulang emphasized social concern and the dignity of human beings. This study aims to analyze Catur Piwulang as a form of humanistic da'wah in the history of Islamization in Java and to examine its relevance to Islamic education. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using library research and a historical-hermeneutic perspective. Data were collected from books, scholarly articles, and historical sources related to Sunan Drajat’s da'wah, Islamic humanism, and Islamic education, and were analyzed through content analysis and historical analysis. The findings reveal that Catur Piwulang—which teaches giving a cane to the blind, food to the hungry, clothing to the naked, and shelter to those exposed to rain—represents a da'wah strategy oriented toward fulfilling basic human needs, upholding human dignity, and strengthening social solidarity. These values reflect the principles of Islamic humanism and correspond with the humanistic theories of Paulo Freire and Abraham Maslow. Furthermore, Catur Piwulang demonstrates strong relevance to Islamic education by promoting empathy, social responsibility, justice, and humanitarian awareness. In conclusion, Sunan Drajat’s Catur Piwulang can be understood as a form of humanistic da'wah that remains relevant as a paradigm for developing moderate, inclusive, and socially civilized Islamic da'wah and education.

Abstract

This study examines the adaptation strategies adopted by smallholder tobacco farmers in Bojonegoro in response to climate variability and the economic pressures of the 1997–1998 economic crisis during 1996–2000. It addresses the limited historical research on the interaction between climate variability and economic crises in shaping tobacco farming. Using a historical method with a socio-economic approach, the study applied heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Data were obtained from statistical archives of Statistics Indonesia (BPS), archives of the Indonesian Sweetener and Fiber Crops Research Institute (Balittas), and interviews with tobacco farmers in Bojonegoro. The findings show that the 1997 El Nino, the 1998–2000 La Nina phenomena, and rising production costs during the economic crisis created significant challenges for tobacco farming. Farmers responded by selecting productive land, adjusting cultivated areas, and diversifying crops according to seasonal conditions and economic constraints. These strategies reduced production risks and supported household livelihoods. The study concludes that the sustainability of tobacco farming in Bojonegoro was largely determined by farmers' adaptive capacity in responding to environmental and economic change.

Abstract

This study examines the historical and spiritual values contained in the tomb of Mbah Ndoro Payung (Syekh Bentong) in Gresik as part of the local Islamic cultural heritage. The research focuses on three main aspects: the history of Mbah Ndoro Payung, an epigraphic study of Islam on his tomb, and an analysis of the tomb's role as a religious tourist destination. This study uses qualitative methods with historical and epigraphic approaches. The historical approach is used to trace the life and contributions of Mbah Ndoro Payung in the process of Islamization in Java. Meanwhile, the epigraphic approach is used to analyze the inscriptions on the tombstone to reveal the identity, religious messages, and cultural symbols contained therein. The research findings indicate that Mbah Ndoro Payung was a Chinese-Muslim Islamic missionary who played a role in the spread of Islam through cultural, social, and humanitarian approaches. Epigraphic analysis revealed inscriptions of Surah Ash-Shaff, verse 13, and the shahada on Mbah Ndoro Payung’s tombstone, as well as Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 257, on his wife’s tombstone. These inscriptions demonstrate strong Islamic values while also illustrating the process of acculturation between Islamic traditions and Majapahit culture, as reflected in the ornamentation and style of the tombstones. In addition to its historical and religious significance, Mbah Ndoro Payung’s tomb continues to serve as a vibrant socio-religious space through the tradition of the “haul,” pilgrimage activities, and the community’s religious practices.  The site also holds potential for the development of religious tourism, which can support the preservation of local Islamic cultural heritage and provide economic benefits to the surrounding community.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between religion and the state during the reign of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz (717–720 CE) from the perspective of Islamic political history. It addresses a significant gap in the existing literature, which has predominantly portrayed Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz as an exemplary moral ruler while paying limited attention to the structural relationship between religious and political authority under his administration. Employing a qualitative library-based method, the study adopts intellectual and political historical approaches to analyze classical Islamic sources alongside contemporary scholarship. The analysis focuses on four key dimensions: political legitimacy, the role of religious scholars, administrative reform, and the ethical orientation of the state. The findings reveal that Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz neither separated religion from the state nor instrumentalized religion solely to legitimize political power. Instead, he developed an integrative model in which religion functioned as the normative foundation of governance, while the state operated as an ethical institution responsible for realizing justice, accountability, and public welfare. This study argues that his administration represents an early articulation of the ethical state in classical Islamic political thought. Its novelty lies in reinterpreting Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz's governance as an institutional model of religion–state relations rather than merely an example of personal piety, thereby contributing to a more structural and theoretical understanding of classical Islamic political thought.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the conditions that enabled KH. Hasyim Asy’ari’s religiosity to become a strategy of resistance against colonial domination, rather than merely an expression of religious nationalism or a historical event in the struggle for independence. This study also extends the application of Dwight B. Billings’ “Religion as Opposition” framework to the context of anti-colonial Islam in Indonesia. The results indicate that KH. Hasyim Asy’ari’s success in transforming religion into an instrument of resistance was determined by the fulfillment of three structural prerequisites. First, the position of the kiai as an “Organic Intellectual” who maintained an emotional bond with the santri and peasant classes. Second, the organizational autonomy of the Tebuireng Pesantren and Nahdatul Ulama, achieved through economic self-reliance and the rejection of colonial subsidies, thereby creating a space free from colonial cultural hegemony. Third, the construction of a “Plausibility Structure” through the Jihad Resolution fatwa, which established theology as the basis for the obligation to wage war (fardhu ‘ain). In conclusion, KH. Hasyim Asy’ari’s movement was a manifestation of a well-developed positional warfare strategy, proving that religion can metamorphose into an effective counter-hegemonic ideology when supported by leadership that mobilizes the community, institutional autonomy, and a new plausibility structure.

Abstract

This study examines the evolution of Raden Ajeng Kartini’s thinking from the concept of emancipation to the establishment of a school for girls during the period 1899–1904. The research is motivated by the conditions of Javanese society during the colonial era, which was still influenced by patriarchal culture and feudal customs that restricted women’s freedom and access to education. The study aims to explain the emergence of Kartini’s critical consciousness, the development of her ideas on emancipation, and the realization of her ideas through education. The research employs Kuntowijoyo’s historical method, which encompasses heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography, utilizing colonial archives, Kartini’s letters, contemporary newspapers, and various supporting literature. The results of the study indicate that the experience of being confined fostered the growth of Kartini’s critical awareness of gender injustice, which evolved into ideas of emancipation emphasizing freedom, equal rights, and education as a means to elevate women’s dignity. These ideas were realized through the establishment of a girls’ school in Rembang as a concrete manifestation of her struggle. This study demonstrates that the transformation of Kartini’s thinking from criticism of gender inequality to educational practice contributes to the fields of intellectual history, women’s historiography, and the history of education in Indonesia.

Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning in schools is often dominated by one-way lectures, resulting in passive student participation and limited development of the cognitive abilities of remembering (C1) and understanding (C2). This study aimed to describe the implementation of the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) model and examine its contribution to students’ remembering and understanding of Ottoman history based on the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. A descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design was employed, involving 28 students from class VIII F at SMPN 2 Colomadu. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with six purposively selected students, documentation, and students’ learning outcomes. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicated that TGT increased students’ participation and learning interest and supported the development of remembering (C1), as demonstrated by their ability to recall historical facts without consulting their notes. TGT also supported understanding (C2), as reflected in students’ ability to explain the role of Sultan Muhammad Al-Fatih and the factors contributing to the progress and decline of the Ottoman Dynasty in their own words. However, its benefits were not experienced equally by all students because participation and comprehension were influenced by individual learning interest. These findings suggest that teachers can use TGT as an interactive alternative to lecture-based instruction while combining it with other methods to accommodate diverse student characteristics. The study also provides empirical insight for developing cooperative and game-based models for teaching Islamic civilization history.

Abstract

This study aims to reconstruct the Spanish conquest by Tariq ibn Ziyad in 711 CE through a global historical and critical historiographic approach. This study is motivated by the dominance of classical historiographic narratives that tend to present the conquest as a mere heroic story, without considering the complexity of the social, political, and geopolitical contexts that underlie it. This study uses a qualitative method with a historical-critical approach through literature study, source criticism, and comparative analysis of Islamic and Western historical narratives. The results show that the Spanish conquest was not merely a military expansion, but part of the geopolitical dynamics of the Mediterranean region influenced by the internal crisis of the Visigoth Kingdom, adaptive military strategies, and social interactions with local communities. In addition, this event had a significant impact on shaping the interconnectedness of civilization between the Islamic and Western worlds, particularly in the fields of science, culture, and politics. Thus, this conquest needs to be understood as a multidimensional and interconnected historical process. This research emphasizes the importance of a critical historiographic approach and a global perspective in the study of Islamic history to produce a more contextual, integrative understanding, free from narrative simplification.

Abstract

Character education in the digital era requires a holistic and integrative approach. This study analyzes the implementation of religious character education through the boarding school program at MTsN 2 Surakarta. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using an interactive model. The findings show that religious values are internalized through a 24-hour dormitory ecosystem, structured worship habituation, regulated gadget use for one to two hours daily, Islamic digital literacy, and humanistic mentoring by musyrif and musyrifah. These strategies encourage students to move from externally controlled compliance toward moral autonomy and independent religious awareness. The integration of madrasah and dormitory systems offers a comprehensive approach to developing academically capable, spiritually resilient, socially responsible, and digitally literate students. With contextual adaptation, this model may serve as a best practice for other boarding madrasas.
