Abstract

This research is motivated by the lack of systematic documentation of the structure, meaning, and function of figurative language in sacred songs that are the core of a traditional agrarian ritual. Furthermore, the role of these songs as a medium for transmitting community values, life philosophy, and ecological knowledge has not been analysed in depth. This study aims to analyse the metrical structure, themes, and use of figurative language in these songs. The research subjects consisted of traditional leaders, elders, singers, and senior farmers to validate the text's meaning. Data were collected through participatory observation, song recordings, in-depth interviews, and documentation, using instruments such as interview guidelines, audio recorders, and text analysis sheets. Data analysis used interactive techniques through data reduction, data presentation, and thematic-semiotic conclusions. The results show that the song's structure resembles the pattern of traditional pupuh, with certain metric modifications, divided into two stanzas that feature fertility mythology and depictions of abundant harvests, and is rich in similes, hyperbole, and personification. In conclusion, these songs are an effective oral medium for passing on values, ecological knowledge, and agrarian wisdom. The implication is that oral traditions need to be preserved as a source of cultural learning and as a means of strengthening collective identity.

Abstract

Abstract

The limited variety and spontaneity of English expressions used by housekeeping department staff when interacting with guests at Bintang Bali Resort may affect the effectiveness of service communication. This study aims to analyse the dominant language functions used by housekeeping department staff and to describe their realisation through language expressions in daily service activities, based on the theoretical framework of Tillit and Bruder. The subjects of this study were four male housekeeping department staff members, consisting of a room attendant, a floor supervisor, and a runner, who are directly involved in guest service activities. This study used a descriptive qualitative method to obtain an in-depth picture of the use of language functions in the context of housekeeping work. Data collection techniques included direct observation, semi-structured interviews, and questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted qualitatively. The results of the study indicate that housekeeping department staff tend to use one main language function, namely the requesting function, which is realised through expressions of asking for permission, requesting assistance, offering services, apologising, and expressing gratitude. These expressions are mostly formulaic and follow the hotel's standard operating procedures to maintain politeness and professionalism in service. This study concluded that although housekeeping staff are capable of carrying out routine communication effectively, further language training is needed to improve spontaneous and adaptive communication skills to address diverse guest needs and characteristics. The implications of this research reinforce the concept that the use of language functions is strongly influenced by the work context and the speaker's communication needs.

Abstract

The low interest in reading and the persistence of bullying among elementary school students indicate the need for learning innovations that focus not only on cognitive aspects but also on the development of social attitudes. The learning model used by teachers tends to be conventional, which is not optimal for fostering students' interest in reading and anti-bullying attitudes. This study aims to analyze and evaluate the effect of the problem-based learning model, assisted by children's storybooks, on elementary school students' interest in reading and anti-bullying attitudes. This study is a quasi-experimental study with a posttest control group design. The study population comprised 124 third-grade students, and a sample of 58 was selected using a random sampling technique. The research data were collected using a questionnaire method, with instruments consisting of a reading interest questionnaire and an anti-bullying attitude questionnaire. Data were analyzed using a MANOVA to determine differences in partial and simultaneous effects between the experimental and control groups. The results showed differences in reading interest between students who learned using the problem-based learning model assisted by children's storybooks and those who learned with the conventional learning model. There were also differences in anti-bullying attitudes between the two groups. In conclusion, the PBL model, supported by children's storybooks, had a positive effect on increasing elementary school students' interest in reading and their anti-bullying attitudes, both partially and simultaneously. The implication is that elementary school teachers can integrate the PBL model into children's storybooks as an innovative learning strategy to foster a culture of literacy while simultaneously fostering anti-bullying character traits in students.

Abstract

The problem encountered in the implementation of Pancasila Education in fourth-grade elementary school is the low ability of students to apply the value of mutual cooperation in the topic of maintaining solidarity and unity. Students tend to understand the concept only at the cognitive level but have not been able to implement this value in learning activities or in their daily lives. This study aims to develop a digital flipbook learning media based on the Megibung tradition that is valid, practical, and effective in improving students’ mutual cooperation attitudes. This study employed a research and development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model. The research subjects consisted of experts and fourth-grade elementary school students. Data were collected using non-test methods, including observation sheets to measure students’ mutual cooperation attitudes, expert validation questionnaires, and student response questionnaires. The research instruments included validation sheets for content experts, instructional design experts, and learning media experts, as well as observation sheets and practicality questionnaires for the developed media. Data were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis, along with statistical testing to determine the effectiveness of the developed media. The results indicate that the Megibung tradition–based digital flipbook media demonstrates a very high level of validity according to expert evaluations, is considered practical based on student trials, and is effective in improving students’ mutual cooperation attitudes during the learning process. Therefore, the Megibung tradition based digital flipbook can serve as an innovative alternative learning media to foster students’ mutual cooperation attitudes in Pancasila Education learning. The findings also imply that the integration of local culture into digital learning media can support the strengthening of character education and enhance student engagement in the learning process.
