Abstract

This study examines the role of pragmatics and language ethics in student communication in the campus environment, both in academic and social contexts. The purpose of this study is to understand the application of pragmatic principles in student communication, as well as to examine how language ethics affect their interactions in the classroom, on social media, and in everyday social interactions. The method used is a mixed-methods approach, with a narrative literature review technique by reviewing articles relevant to this topic. This was followed by the implementation of a module that replicated the problem strategy. The results of the study indicate that: First, pragmatic principles such as appropriateness of speech, politeness, and communication strategies have a major influence on increasing the effectiveness and ethics of student language. Language ethics, which includes the use of verbal and nonverbal strategies, has been shown to be an important element in fostering polite communication and maintaining interpersonal relationships. Secondly, experimental results on the use of the previously developed module showed a significance of 2.76 from being categorized as sufficient (: 4.86) to good (: 7.62). This significant result contributes to the development of theories of pragmatics and language ethics in education.

Abstract

Indonesia, as a country with religious and cultural diversity, needs education that teaches moderate and tolerant attitudes, especially in higher education. Yogyakarta State University (UNY) has an important role in instilling religious moderation values to its students to encourage harmony in a plural society. This research aims to explore the implementation of religious moderation values education at UNY and analyse the application of such learning in the context of higher education. The approach used is qualitative with a case study method, where data is collected through in-depth interviews with students, lecturers, and managers of religious education programmes, as well as observations of activities related to religious moderation. The data obtained included interviews with relevant parties, as well as observations of religious education programs at UNY, such as religious education courses, interfaith dialogue forums, and student organisation activities. The results show that UNY has successfully integrated the values of religious moderation through various educational programmes and activities on campus. However, challenges such as differences in religious understanding, the influence of radicalisation from outside the campus, and limited facilities for wider dialogue are still obstacles in this effort.

Abstract

In today’s digital era, students face challenges in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for success in an increasingly complex world. Computational Thinking (CT) has emerged as a pivotal 21st-century skill for innovation and problem-solving. This study investigates the impact of STEM-based learning through a water turbine project on students’ CT and Learning Engagement (LE) at the secondary school level. A quasi-experimental approach with a pretest-posttest control group design was employed. The participants were 76 of 445 8th-grade students from secondary schools in Bandung, Indonesia, divided equally into experimental and control groups, each comprising 38 students. Statistical analyses using the Mann-Whitney U test on n-gain scores revealed a significant improvement in CT for the experimental group compared to the control group (U = 50.00, sig.). < 0.001, and a large effect size (r = 0.80). Similarly, LE in the experimental group increased significantly compared to the control group (U = 10.50, sig.). < 0.001, and a large effect size (r = 0.85). These results highlight that STEM learning through the water turbine project effectively enhances students’ CT and LE. This study demonstrates the potential of STEM-based approaches to foster essential 21st-century skills among secondary school students. However, further research is needed to explore its application across diverse contexts and skill areas.
