Abstract

Rejang Dayung is an ancient dance inherited from the ancestors, serving a ritualistic function at Pura Luhur Batukau. It is exclusively performed in Jaba Tengah or the media mandala (living room) during the Sinineban (closing) ceremony at Pura Luhur Batukau. Noteworthy for its straightforward expressions in movements, floor patterns, costumes, and accompaniment, this dance merits scholarly investigation. The objectives of this study are to elucidate the philosophical value of Rejang Dayung performance as an ancient dance inherited from Pura Luhur Batukau, examine the correlation between the philosophical value of Rejang Dayung and the societal beliefs of Pura Luhur Batukau, and expound upon the significance of Rejang Dayung's philosophical value based on the concepts of Satyam (truth), Shivam (holiness), and Sundaram (beauty). The authors employed a qualitative method, incorporating field observation and interview techniques to gather data and ascertain the initial presentation of Rejang Dayung. The study's findings unequivocally reveal the philosophical values of Rejang Dayung and the embodiment of the Tri Hita Karana teachings (Balinese concepts for creating harmony), which encompass harmonious relationships between humans and God, humans and fellow humans, and humans and the universe. The philosophical value of Rejang Dayung signifies a profound surrender to the magnificence of Ida Sanghyang Widhi Wasa, God the Greatest, manifested through the collective choreography in pairs, symbolizing the convergence of Shiva-Parwati energy. This convergence, perceived by the people of Pura Luhur Batukau as the guardian of harmony in the universe and its constituents, underscores the dance's cultural and spiritual significance.

Abstract

The development of storytelling motifs is enhanced through the Space-Time-Plane (STP) system, a drawing technique that integrates Image Way and Grammar principles. This system adeptly represents spatial and temporal dimensions, facilitating the creation of illustrative storytelling. Its application extends to translating images into meaning and vice versa, showcasing its impact on the textile sector. Notably, it drives the evolution of non-repetitive motif compositions embodying story concepts presented with flat design styling. Despite its successes, applying the STP system to motif development poses challenges, particularly when incorporating motifs into product patterns, leading to story truncation. Conversely, the non-repetitive motif composition using the STP system ensures the entire narrative is encapsulated in a single image, preventing any intersection of motifs. Motif development with the STP system draws inspiration mainly from modern sources despite its closer connection to traditional Indonesian art, particularly heroic stories like the epic La Galigo. While developments inspired by heroic narratives, including La Galigo, exist, their visualization remains confined to single-image models. The primary aim of this research is to generate an inspirational motif rooted in Indonesian traditional art, specifically the La Galigo epic. This is achieved through the utilization of the STP system, flat design styling, and repetitive composition or repeated illustration models. Employing an exploratory method, the research culminates in a repetitive motif composition, providing an alternative resolution to the issue of truncated motifs in non-repetitive composition models. The study aspires to contribute significantly to research focused on enriching the application of the STP system in visualizing stories through the manipulation of textile motif compositions.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the work of the 2016 Indonesian Press Photo Award Photo of the Year entitled "Tinjau Titik Api," using the "Three Visual Layers" theory. Photo of the Year 2016 was chosen because it has the advantage of good visual value and high news value, especially for people in the news. The three visual layers analysis includes optical, cultural, and photographic meaning. The optical aspect is for the non-blind eyes, the cultural aspect includes known visual appearances and unknown visual appearances, and the photographic aspect has a functional appearance, personal appearance, and subjective appearance. The research method is qualitative analysis because its implementation is based on visual analysis to find meaning from photos depicting three figures who are symbols of the strength of the Indonesian state, namely, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, TNI Commander General Gatot Nurmantyo, and Chief of the Indonesian National Police General Badarudin Haiti, who is inspecting the location of forest and land fires, in Geronggong Village, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency, South Sumatra. Data analysis involves: Scrutinizing relevant and irrelevant information, reducing data, compiling codes against findings data, and verifying codes as a reference for discussion and conclusion. The research results show that the 2016 Photo of the Year contains meaning that shows the Indonesian government's commitment to dealing with forest and land fires in Sumatra. The photo has advantages in terms of visual value which is reflected in the composition, depth of focus, and expression of the president, and in terms of news value, it is superior in terms of character value, as well as another advantage in the closeness of the photographer to the object of the event.

Abstract

Female Sekaa Gong is a collective of women in Ubud Village who unite to perform Balinese music, transforming individual ideas into a collective vision. This group fosters social relationships and a sense of togetherness among its members. This article explores the intricacies of the Female Sekaa Gong, highlighting its role in preserving traditional Balinese music (Karawitan) and providing feminine aesthetic nuances. The research, conducted through a qualitative interpretive method within a cultural studies paradigm, examines the positionality of the Female Sekaa Gong in social and touristic contexts. Findings indicate a rise in the number of Female Sekaa Gong in Ubud Village, motivated by five key factors: religious emotion, a sense of humiliation, status improvement, actualization of beauty, and the desire to create tourist performances. The Female Sekaa Gong plays several roles in ritual and social activities, including: (1) serving as a ritual complement; (2) building social solidarity; (3) expanding traditional roles; and (4) preserving cultural values. Its presence marks a shift in the social paradigm regarding gender norms in gamelan performance, reflecting a dynamic interplay between tradition and modernity and adapting to contemporary circumstances.

Abstract

This article proposes a model of interpretation of the Langke Bulawa statue based on a theoretical approach based on the cultural sociology theory of naturalism from the perspective of the place and location where the statue is located, namely in the Bada Valley. Cultural sociology can fill the cultural gap in the sociology of art and can provide a method for identifying the linguistic context that surrounds social institutions. The aim is to discuss classical readings of the object by constructing alternatives that do not attempt to decipher symbolic content or show naturalistic representations in the form of sculptural objects. Instead, in Langke Bulawa Statue, the author proposes a theoretical approach that goes beyond the descriptive approach that ultimately provides only a vague interpretation of the Langke Bulawa statue as stelae by considering the statue as an artistic expression of a people with aesthetic norms, conditioned by traditions, resulting in a kind of object form that must try to be found based on the representation of cultural views in Bada Valley, where the physical boundaries between humans and non-humans disappear, to show figures that have the same essence, but merge in one object form, namely the Langke Bulawa statue as a representation of a figure with the only female form where the implications of a sociocultural perspective in this study will contribute to interpreting the Langke Bulawa statue as a potential contribution of cultural sociology research related to megalithic relics in Central Sulawesi Province.
