Abstract

This study addresses the lack of introduction to the Javanese Krama Inggil language among children aged 4-6 years in the environment of RA Hidayatut Thullab located in Trenggalek district, East Java. This decline occurred due to several things, such as the lack of introduction to the Javanese Krama Inggil language from an early age, globalization, and environmental factors that could lead to the extinction of the language. This research was carried out as an implementation of efforts to preserve culture through educational games. This research aims to increase children's interest in the Javanese Krama Inggil language through educational game. The basis for this research uses data regarding the stages of language development and play stages of children aged 4-6 years. Apart from that, anthropometric data is also used as a basis for designing educational game tools that suit the size of the child's hand so that the child can play comfortably. Interview and observation methods were carried out with teachers at RA Hidayatut Thullab. During the study, interviews were conducted to identify the learning media requirements in schools and how language learning is carried out. Additionally, non-participant observation was carried out for four days to identify problems, such as the children's ability to communicate using Javanese Krama Inggil. The research results show that RA Hidayatut Thullab students only use basic Javanese Krama Inggil or not at all in their daily activities. The findings of this research highlight the decreasing number of speakers of Javanese Krama Inggil due to a lack of early introduction to the language. Therefore, schools need to involve local content as an effort to introduce regional languages to children from an early age. To make the learning process more interesting and enjoyable, media is needed that can help children recognize and learn regional languages.

Abstract

Ruwatan is a self-cleansing method in Javanese society for those considered sukerta (spiritually unclean person). To prevent a misfortune in life, the sukerta people must be ritually cleaned. The Murwakala performance is led by a dhalang ruwat in this ruwatan ceremonial procession, therefore a dhalang plays an important role. However, several qualifications must be met before being ordained as a dhalang ruwat and trusted to lead the ruwatan sukerta procession. The objective of the study is to explore the concept of old-aged (sepuh) in becoming a dhalang ruwat. The descriptive qualitative model was used to develop this study, the results of which were descriptions of field notes in the form of interviews with dhalang ruwat, observations, and documentation. The results showed that in order to become a dhalang ruwat, one must be descended from a dhalang ruwat, be a role model, and have married their offspring. The notion of sepuh (old-aged) in becoming a dhalang ruwat includes being psychologically mature in terms of age, as well as being spiritually capable in terms of social position.

Abstract

Utilizing mascots as an extension of the brand to reach the target audience is one strategy in visual branding that has proven its effectiveness. Mascots with solid characters can build consumer trust and are even more impressive than other visual identities. However, currently, very few mascot design methods or steps lead to the creation of a mascot that is both convincing and an agent of the institution it represents. This research highlights the convincing agent design process as the primary basis for designing mascot designs. This research uses the theory of believable agents, which includes seven dimensions: personality, emotions, self-motivation, change, social interaction, consistency of expression, and the illusion of life. These seven theories will be supported by the results of the questionnaires. The questionnaire results found that credible and trustworthy agents should have a friendly personality, which can be seen from their facial expressions, body movements, and the way they present themselves. The research results confirm that the seven dimensions of a trustworthy agent can be applied to mascot design that prioritizes the formation of a unique and distinctive personality. Mascots will be perceived as genuine individuals with specific characteristics that appear in the way they act (behavior), the way they think (think), and the way they feel (emotions). The results of this research provide a bridge for designers to consider ideas up to the mascot design stage.

Abstract

The film "Budi Pekerti" has garnered critical acclaim, earning multiple awards and nominations at prominent festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival 2023 and Jakarta Film Week 2023. This study examines how cinematic techniques are utilized to depict social realities. Anchored in Sergei Eisenstein's formalist theory and Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, the research adopts a qualitative methodology involving scene observations, in-depth interviews with the director, and document analysis. The findings reveal that montage techniques and visual compositions effectively construct narratives that highlight moral and ethical issues. Additionally, the use of symbols within the film uncovers culturally relevant messages, providing deeper insights into contemporary social dynamics. Through an integrative approach combining formalist and semiotic perspectives, the study underscores the critical role of cinematic aesthetics in conveying complex social commentaries. This research makes a significant contribution to the fields of visual arts, communication, and linguistics by offering a comprehensive framework that links visual storytelling with cultural critique and societal reflection, emphasizing the power of film as a medium for understanding and shaping cultural narratives.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze of the expressions of femininity in food photography as carried out by Kompakers Jogja. Photography has historically been established inside male-dominated domains. Unlike the historical context where photography has consistently been associated with male-dominated, Kompakers Jogja presents a contrasting perspective that questions the established norms of male dominance. This research explore the diverse viewpoints of ten individuals using a combination of photovoice and photo-elicitation. Through the application of qualitative content analysis within the thematic framework of femininity in photography, categorized as Theatricality, Tactility, Softness, and Hybridity. The analysis reveals that community members infuse distinct feminine sensibilities in their photography, as corroborated through visual scrutiny and validated during photo-elicitation. Prevalent among these manifestations are theatricality and hybridity, exemplified by strategic prop placement and digital enhancements aimed at augmenting the aesthetic allure of the captured images. In addition, tactility becomes important, especially when carefully choosing angles to elicit gustatory wants. Although the works of the members exhibit some softness, they serve more as supporting element. In summary, the Kompakers Jogja depict motifs that subtly and intricately symbolize femininity in their photography. This research shows the distinct characteristics linked to the facets of femininity as expressions of women's self-identity.

Abstract

A cohesive identity for MSME products is imperative, particularly in light of the prevalence of similar types and shapes of products, especially snacks. The adoption of an identity in the form of a logo has the potential to serve as a differentiating factor for snack products. This research aims to devise an identity design for the product logo of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) potato chip snacks. To this end, the art-based research (ABR) method was employed as a facilitator to understand creative ideas in a visual work. The research method comprised two stages: the initial stage involved observing and communicating with relevant individuals to understand the challenges faced by the product. The subsequent stage entailed the implementation of the design thinking method to gain an understanding of design centered on human needs. The previous logo was found to be inconsistent and lacked legibility. MSME snack products must contend with competition in the market, particularly to enhance recognition among similar products. The result is a logo identity design that aligns with the values of the product owner. Adopting this new logo identity design differentiates the snack food product from competing products while concurrently reinforcing its image.

Abstract

This study uses a qualitative case study method with three HL music students in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. It aims to analyze the creative process of students who selected HL music out of interest but lacked prior musical theory or skills. The focus is on the Contemporary Music Maker HL Only assessment, where students produce a music composition. The composition process is analyzed using Jean Piaget's cognitive theory, particularly the stages of assimilation (integrating prior knowledge), accommodation (adapting to new knowledge), and equilibrium (balancing the two). The findings show that Piaget’s cognitive stages effectively guide students through the creative process. The quality of equilibrium each student achieves is reflected in their IB scores, demonstrating their ability to integrate and apply new knowledge. This study underscores the relevance of Piaget's cognitive theory as a foundation for developing creative skills in music education. It highlights the importance of understanding cognitive stages to support student learning in music composition. Further research is recommended to explore its application across different educational levels and cultural contexts.

Abstract

Onomatopoeia is one of the visual elements in graphic design works. Cultural diversity in Indonesia has the potential to produce domestic onomatopoeia. Antawacana is one of the speech cultural activities of natural sound mimesis in Javanese society. It is the speech and sounds performed by Dalang of Wayang Purwa (puppeteers of shadow puppet performance). This research examines the potential of Indonesian domestic onomatopoeia, especially Javanese, which comes from the speech of puppeteers as an asset to support the increase in potential and productivity in the field of graphic design. This research converts audio into visual items to develop Indonesian domestic onomatopoeia based on the domestic cultural asset of Antawacana. This research interprets sound into visuals by using Antawacana as the basis for visualization. The variety of sounds in Antawacana itself results from Dalang’s interpretation. This research contributes to the Indonesian creative industry by providing visual assets based on Antawacana. These assets can assist the communication process in other creative works. In addition, along with technological developments, the potential of onomatopoeia as a domestic cultural asset can be developed into an artificial intelligence asset in online graphic design creation platforms.
