Abstract

This study was attempted to find out the contributions of using chart to students’ achievement in writing cause and effect paragraphs to the third semester of Management students of Universitas Prima Indonesia, Medan, 2019/2020. The research of this study was a quasi experiment design. There were 56 students taken randomly from two classes then divided into two groups; experimental group and control group. The experimental group was taught by using chart to achieve their writing, while control group was taught in a conventional way; without using chart. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The reliability of the experimental group was 0.42, and the reliability of the control group’s test was 0.74. The analysis showed that the score of the students by using chart were different significantly from those students without using chart. The result of t- calculation showed that t-observe is 9.8 and the t-observe is bigger than t-table (9.8> 1.671 : p = 0.05). It  means that using chart significantly contributes the the students’ achievement in writing cause and effect paragraphs. In other words, the hypothesis which said that “there is a significant contribution of using chart to students’ achievement in writing cause and effect paragraphs” is accepted.

Abstract

AbstractLearning Vocabulary is an important and basic part of mastering language skill. The students are able to master language skills if he has good vocabulary. On the other hand, there is a big challenge for the English teacher in the remote area to make the students enthusiastic in learning English Vocabulary. Teacher needs to use something that is close to students’ life in teaching new vocabulary. Nowadays, mobile phone and games are something that cannot be separated from for students’ life. The teacher can use online mobile games like “Clash of Kings” as an alternative media to make students interested in learning English vocabulary. This research was conducted to know whether or not there is an influence of playing “Clash of King” online mobile game in teaching English vocabulary at the seventh grade of MTs. Al Fattah Banyuurip Ujungpangkah Gresik. The result of the research indicated that there is an influence of online mobile game “Clash of King” in teaching English vocabulary.

Abstract

Writing is the most difficult skill in English, so most English as a foreign language (EFL) learners tend to make errors in writing. In assisting the learners to sucessfully acquire writing skill, the analysis of errors and the understanding of their sources are neccessary. This study attempts to explore the types of grammatical errors occurred in the paragraph writing of EFL learners based on the linguistics taxonomy. It also investigates the most grammatical error that presents in their writing. Twenty-eight of paragraph writing composed by EFL learners were collected and analysed.  Result showed that there were six types of grammatical error found in EFL learners’ worksheet of paragraph writing and indefinite article incorrect an used for a was found to be the dominant of errors.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain and describe the use of video media to improve vocabulary of 7 grade students of SMPN 1 Nanga Pinoh in the academic year 2020/2021. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method that focuses on analyzing the use of video to improve student vocabulary. This research is conducted interactively and continuosly until it is comeplete so that there are no questions to continue. The result of this study indicate that most students become more active in participating in the learning proscess using vocabulary. This indicates that the use of video to master vocabulary is considered effective to encourage students during the learning process

Abstract

AbstractGrammar is one of determining points of mastering English. It refers to a set of the structural rules of language which concerns with the grammar in any given natural language. Communicative competence would have revealed that it gives no endorsement for the neglect of grammar. Students of Plantation processing technology program of Politeknik kelapa Sawit Citra Widya Edukasi face difficultiy in learning grammar because of the perceptions that grammar is trict and boring. However, English lecturer finds a way to cope with the problem by using communicative grammar approach. Implement speaking practices can motivate students in learning grammar. The difficulty that is usually faced by students related to learning grammar is memorizing the many grammar rules. Remembering grammar alone does not help students to master grammar easily. That is because of the method of memorizing makes students easy to forget so it will be easier to remember grammar while practices speaking. The findings show that speaking on grammar learning, students become more motivated and confident to learn grammar. Communicative learning grammar can change the perceptions of students who have assumed that grammar is difficult to become learning that is easy and fun. In addition, student confidence also increased.Keyword: Speaking, Communicative Grammar, Learning Motivation

Abstract

An English textbook has an important role in teaching and learning process, to support the learning process in the classroom. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the English for Specific Purposes of Nursing bachelor program and diploma program. This study was conducted by using qualitative approach and analyses in descriptive method. The samples were 92 respondents and was divided from 62 students of 3rd grade of nursing bachelor program and 30 students of 3rd from diploma of nursing of STIKES Pemkab Jombang who are getting the English subject in this semester and the sampling technique used total sampling. The instrument of this study used questionnaire and the interview guideline in form of closed – ended question. The data analysis was descriptive analysis in the form of number. The result of this study revealed that the English for Nursing Textbook was well designed and encouraged the students’ ability to improve the skills in Nursing English language. English subject help the students to communicate in English to support their career in field of nursing Education. Although this english textbook is good enough, there are some evaluations, such as provided the listening comprehension for listening activity, so the lecturers have to open a youtube to improve the students’ ability in listening and speaking.

Abstract

This article provides a brief description on teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and responses to the issues happening on ESP instruction among foreigner particularly in Indonesia. ESP can be referred to English language teaching for specific career, studies or professionalism. Hence, there is specific reason for which English is learned. The materials and the skills learnt by students are different from General English. As the result, creating an appropriate course design of ESP is also different. Unfortunately, in its implementation, there are still many cases that is not supposed to be happened in ESP learning teaching practice. For instance, in some universities ESP is even practiced like General English. In another cases ESP instruction is even far from the concept of teaching in it. Based on this reason, the writer would like to propose three important items to practice ESP well. It is necessary to the institution, ESP lecturer, and all parties include it, to consider three most important aspects in practicing ESP. Those are ESP concept, ESP objective, and ESP course design.  Hereinafter, after discussing this principle, there will be no longer available to discuss that the wrong perception in ESP practice still happen in university student.

Abstract

Techniques are important thing for building students’ speaking skills. Therefore the teacher should have techniques and should be able to apply them correctly. Many researchers have discussed about this topic with different tittle actually. This study aimed to find out the techniques used by the teacher for building students’ speaking skill at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Karang Intan on the beginning of pandemic covid 19. Furthermore, the researcher would like to gain more knowledge about how the teacher applies the techniques, then what the advantages and disadvantages of them. The researcher uses qualitative as the method for conducting this research with English teacher itself as the subject. The researcher collects the data through interview, documentation and observation. The data is analyzed by using Miles and Hubberman’s theory.The result shows the teacher uses stimulation, telling story, discussion, and picture describing as the techniques. The English teacher applies the techniques in different ways. Stimulation:  greeting and giving questions, telling story: experience story and short narrative story, discussion: update news, and picture describing: family picture. Furthermore, these techniques have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Abstract

This study was describe the improvement of students’ reading comprehension and writing ability through CIRC. In conducting this study, the reseracher collected data from students of second semester Speaking class in their second semester at STKIP PGRI Jombang. . The problems faced in this class are the students were still confused of how to find implicit and explicit information, word meaning, and reference word in reading comprehension, the students were still confused how to start producing narrative text and sometimes they lose their ideas in the middle of composing narative text because they were lack of vocabularies.The instruments used here were interview. observation, field note, questionnaires, and test. . Each cycle consisted of four meetings in which two meetings were for implementing reading comprehension and the other two meetings were for implementing writing. The results of the study show that CIRC can improve (1) students’ ability in reading compehension and writing and (2) teaching and learning process. Thus, CIRC can be an alternative teaching strategy that benefits for improving students’ achievement, ability, and participation in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

This article is the study of magical girl in the novel using magic theory and descriptive qualitative as the method. Through such a method, the researcher analyzes and describes the words and the author’s description regarding magical girl in the novel; Luna’s childhood that is full of magical life, the elements of fantasy potrayed in the novel, andcomparison of Luna’s magic to Xan’s magic. The finding is that Luna as the main character learning magic from her foster parent, Xan, is really a magical girl since her magic is stronger than her teaching foster parent, Xan, the witch. Besides, the elements of fantasy shows magical situation in which Luna lives.
