Abstract

Stunting is a condition of growth failure in toddlers due to chronic malnutrition and chronic infections, including worm infections and giardiasis. Kampung Baru Nan XX Village, Lubuk Begalung District, Padang City, is one of the areas with a high stunting rate. Education related to the prevention and treatment of this infectious disease is needed to improve public understanding in order to break the chain of causes of stunting. This counseling activity aims to improve public knowledge, especially mothers of toddlers, about the relationship between worm infections and giardiasis with stunting and preventive measures. The methods used are interactive lectures and discussions. The counseling involved mothers of toddlers and integrated health post cadres in the area. From the examination of 20 feces samples of toddlers in this area, no positive cases of worm infections and giardiasis were found. The results of this activity showed a good understanding of the participants regarding the importance of environmental sanitation, personal hygiene, and providing nutritious food to children. This counseling is effective in increasing public awareness regarding worm infections and giardiasis as risk factors for stunting. Follow-up activities can be carried out in the form of monitoring and providing nutritional interventions to support sustainable stunting prevention in this region.

Abstract

Anemia was one of the leading causes of maternal mortality, with the 2018 Riset Kesehatan Dasar showing that 48.9% of pregnant women in Indonesia were affected. The high prevalence of anemia was primarily caused by nutritional deficiencies, which resulted from a lack of knowledge about proper nutritional needs during pregnancy. One preventive measure was the consumption of at least ninety Blood Additive Tablets (TTD) during pregnancy. An educational activity aimed to increase pregnant women’s knowledge about anemia prevention and the importance of consuming TTD. The methods used included lectures, discussions, distribution of educational materials like leaflets and posters, and sharing-hearing sessions. The success of the education program was measured based on the increase in participants' knowledge before and after the educational activity. The results showed an increase in the average knowledge score of pregnant women from 5.75 before the education to 9.25 after the education, with a p-value of 0.02. This indicated that the educational intervention was effective in improving knowledge. The use of health promotion materials, particularly leaflets, played a key role in enhancing understanding. It was expected that all pregnant women would consume TTD as recommended, and that health workers would regularly remind them of its importance. The activity was also intended to be conducted routinely to reduce the incidence of anemia among pregnant women.

Abstract

Dental caries is a major health issue commonly affecting children in Indonesia, including those in Lembah Melintang District, West Pasaman. To support the Indonesia Free of Caries 2030 program, preventive efforts are needed through the training and empowerment of school-level dental health agents, known as "young dentists." This preventive approach aims to establish collective behavior in maintaining dental health and to create a sustainable culture of dental health awareness within schools and the community. The purpose of this training initiative is to enhance teachers’ knowledge and skills in teaching the importance of dental and oral health to students. Furthermore, through the empowerment of young dentists, selected students are trained as health agents to contribute to maintaining dental health at school. The methods used in this program include lectures, interactive discussions, and hands-on practice on oral health maintenance. Results showed an increase in teachers’ understanding of dental and oral health, as well as active student involvement as young dentists fulfilling their roles as health agents. Additionally, an improvement in understanding was observed, reflected in increased scores from pretest to posttest. The conclusion of this activity is that the training of teachers and young dentists can strengthen preventive health measures at schools and support the national goal of Indonesia Free of Caries 2030. This training and empowerment model has proven effective in raising awareness and encouraging community participation in early dental caries prevention.

Abstract

The 2023 Indonesian Health Survey data shows that the 15-19 age group accounts for the highest percentage of smokers (56.5%), followed by the 10-14 age group (18.4%). This data indicates that children are among the groups with a significant likelihood of becoming a generation of smokers. Lack of understanding of children regarding the dangers of cigarettes, widespread exposure to cigarette advertisements in various media, easy access to cigarettes without age restrictions, and the influence of the social environment have a significant influence on children to smoke. Providing education on the dangers of cigarettes needs to be done from childhood to reduce the number of beginner smokers. This activity aims to increase students' knowledge and awareness of the dangers of cigarettes so that it can prevent and reduce the number of cigarettes in children. This activity occurred at SDN 32 Andalas, Padang City, targeting all 53 students in grades 5 and 6. The methods used were counseling, distribution of leaflets, and installation of posters about the dangers of cigarettes. After the activity was carried out, there was an increase in the average value of students' knowledge level, from 6.25 in the pre-test to 7.58 in the post-test, with a p-value of 0.001 (<0.005). So, it can be concluded that the education that was carried out successfully increased students' knowledge regarding the dangers of cigarettes. Thus, it is hoped that students will be aware of the dangers of cigarettes and will be motivated not to smoke. It is also extended to SDN 32 Andalas to continue educating students not to smoke, implementing a smoke-free area, and strictly supervising students who smoke.

Abstract

Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA) are groups of plants traditionally cultivated in home gardens and used as sources of natural medicine. One of the widely utilized TOGA plants is Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera Lam.), known for their high nutritional content and various pharmacological benefits. Research shows that Moringa leaves contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and phenolic acids, which support health benefits, including antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. This community service activity was conducted at Al-Hidayah Orphanage with the aim of enhancing the community’s understanding and skills in utilizing TOGA, particularly Moringa leaves, through herbal tea-making training. Using a qualitative approach, the activities included an initial survey, counseling, practical training, and evaluations through pre-test and post-test questionnaires to measure participants' knowledge improvement. The results showed a significant increase in participants’ understanding of TOGA benefits and Moringa leaf processing into herbal tea, with knowledge levels rising from an initial 16.7% to 91.3% after the training. This increase indicates that counseling and hands-on training effectively improved community awareness and skills. Additionally, the activity introduced the potential for developing herbal products from local plants, which could provide health benefits and economic opportunities through Moringa leaf-based herbal tea production. To sustain the program, further training is recommended to enhance participants’ proficiency in processing TOGA, especially as value-added herbal products. Collaboration with educational institutions is also suggested to expand research and development on TOGA products within the community.
