Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of CANEL (car number line) media in developing early childhood numeracy skills. The research background concerns children’s limited understanding of number concepts, number symbols, and basic arithmetic operations introduced through conventional methods. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Participants were 15 children aged 5–6 years. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, with triangulation to ensure data validity. The findings indicate that CANEL media provides children with meaningful, concrete and more interactive numeracy learning experiences. Children were able to connect number symbols with quantities, understand number sequences, and perform simple addition and subtraction. CANEL media also supported children’s engagement, motivation, and self-confidence during learning activities. Thus, CANEL media can be used as an alternative for early childhood numeracy learning.

Abstract

Abstract Storytelling ability is one of the important aspects of early childhood language development that plays a role in improving communication skills, vocabulary, and children’s confidence in expressing ideas verbally. However, based on observations conducted at TK Budi Rahayu Ketapang Wedung Demak, the storytelling ability of Group B children aged 5–6 years had not developed optimally. This study aimed to improve children’s storytelling ability through the use of serial picture media in learning activities. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach conducted in two cycles, consisting of planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 10 children consisting of 6 girls and 4 boys. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation, while data analysis used qualitative descriptive analysis and simple quantitative analysis by calculating the percentage of children’s developmental achievement. The results showed that the use of serial picture media was able to improve children’s storytelling ability satisfactorily. In the pre-cycle stage, most children were in the “beginning to develop” category (70%), which then increased in Cycle I with the emergence of the “developing very well” category reaching 10%. In Cycle II, the improvement became more satisfactory, with 80% of children achieving the “developing very well” category. These findings indicate that serial picture media can be an effective learning strategy to improve early childhood storytelling skills. Keywords: Storytelling Ability; Serial Picture Media; Language

Abstract

Abstract

This research is motivated by the lack of variety of learning media used to recognize number symbols in group A children at Nusa Bangsa Betet Kepohbaru Bojonegoro A Kindergarten so that cognitive abilities in recognizing number symbols are less than optimal. Therefore, it is necessary to develop media to stimulate the ability to recognize number symbols 1-10 in group A children, namely by using the Number Bag media. Number bag is a media in the form of a board with pockets as storage space equipped with flashcards (picture cards). This type of research is Research and Development (R&D) which refers to the research and development model according to Borg and Gall which includes 10 stages. Observation and documentation techniques are used in the research data collection technique. The assessment of material experts obtained an average score of 3.8 with a feasibility percentage of 77.5%, and was categorized as "feasible". While media experts obtained an average score of 4.0 with a feasibility percentage of 86% and were categorized as "very feasible". The results of the initial trial with 5 children obtained an average result of 3.72 with a percentage value of 93% and were categorized as "very feasible". Meanwhile, the trial of use in a large group of 11 children, obtained an average result of 3.56 with a percentage value of 89% and categorized as "very feasible". Based on these data, it can be concluded that the Number Bag media is feasible to be used to stimulate cognitive abilities to recognize number symbols 1-10 in children in group A.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the role of parents in developing the expressive and receptive language abilities of young children through everyday activities. Expressive language refers to children’s ability to express thoughts, feelings, and desires verbally and nonverbally, while receptive language concerns their ability to understand stories, instructions, and rules. This study employed a qualitative approach using a collective case study design. The participants were four parents of young children aged 3–6 years, selected purposively based on their relevance to the research focus. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing with the assistance of NVivo 15. The findings indicate that parental roles in developing children’s expressive and receptive language encompass six main aspects: assistance, communication, opportunities, supervision, motivation, and guidance. Assistance was provided through play, book reading, and other daily activities. Communication was established through two-way conversations, discussions of children’s experiences, and responsive interactions. Parents also provided opportunities for children to express themselves, monitored gadget use and language use, provided verbal reinforcement, and guided children in pronunciation and appropriate language use according to context. These findings demonstrate that children’s language stimulation occurs not only through formal learning but also through consistent, responsive, and meaningful parental involvement in everyday life. The study emphasizes the importance of parental awareness in creating a communicative environment that supports the development of children’s expressive and receptive language abilities.
