Abstract

Exploitation remains a pressing issue today, particularly affecting women, who are often treated as objects of violence and subjected to various forms of exploitation. This phenomenon is also depicted in the character of Fevvers, the female protagonist in Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter, who is portrayed as a half-swan woman enduring exploitation. The aim of this study is to analyze the types of exploitation experienced by the protagonist in the novel. Utilizing qualitative research methods, the study involved data collection and analysis from the text, which included refining and organizing relevant information. The findings reveal that the protagonist has been subjected to exploitation since her adolescence. This underscores how Nights at the Circus not only mirrors the real-world exploitation of women but also highlights its presence in fictional narratives.

Abstract

The Javanese nobility, including regents and non-palace officials, had privileges to access certain colonial areas. In Cariyos Lelampahanipun Purwaelana, Purwaelana's journey through the residential areas of colonial officials and political offices, from Semarang to Batavia, implicitly depicts the lives of the priayi. Although implicit, this work reflects how the author, who received a Western-style education, also enjoyed the political safari facilities in various government offices. This article analyzes expressions that indicate Purwaelana's admiration and accessibility to symbols of political rights through Barthes' semiotic approach. The narratives and quotations reveal that Purwaelana managed to explore the elite residential areas and enter the Dutch colonial legal institutions. This admiration peaked when he visited Batavia and observed the splendour of the governor-general's palace. This experience contrasted with the restricted access experienced by Javanese kings and other regents under Dutch control.

Abstract

The United States of America roots its national identity to the ideals of the American Dream which admit inclusivity. This has driven a big wave of migration from Mexico which formed the Chicano community. On the other hand, the increasing wave of Mexican immigrants has caused anxiety for previous immigrants (referring to Europeans).  This anxiety encourages the government to form their collective identity based on American Exceptionalism ideology which excludes people of color like Chicano. Those ideas are seen as a form of new colonialism and has led to the formation of the Chicano Literary Movement. This movement aims to merge the Chicano into the national identity of the United States and oppose the partition of typical colonial identities that emerged through the discourse of American Exceptionalism. The efforts made are to reconstruct cultural identity and restore local knowledge of the Chicano community through literary works. Therefore, this study aims to look at the reconstruction of Chicano identity attempted by Chicano writers to escape the construction of colonial identity. Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima and Heart of Aztlan which are the most fundamental Chicano literary works were chosen as the material objects of this study. Meanwhile, the researcher uses Gloria Anzaldua's New Mestiza Consciousness theory to see the formation of transnational identities from both novels. New Mestiza Consciousness is rooted in plural consciousness that recognizes all kinds of contradictions, ambiguities, and deviations to form a hybrid identity by destroying the duality of colonial subjects and objects. The results of this study show that Anaya attempts to present various points of view that represent the Chicano perspective, indigenous communities, and white communities. However, in the actions of his characters, Anaya still sides with indigenous identities. As a result, the Chicano identity formed is exclusive and produces a new binary partition between native and foreign. Therefore, Anaya failed to achieve mestiza consciousness and failed to break away from western (colonial) identity and knowledge.

Abstract

In the digital era, the transmission of spiritual values through online platforms has become increasingly vital, particularly in religious education for Buddhist Sunday Schools. Jataka tales, which recount the past lives of the Buddha, hold significant potential for instilling Buddhist values in learners. However, the adaptation and effective delivery of these stories via digital platforms remain underexplored. This study aims to describe and analyze the use of Jataka tales through digital platforms—specifically the YouTube channels Dhamma Metta Jember, Guna Dharma, and SMB Sikkhadama Santibhumi—in the context of Buddhist Sunday School education. Employing a qualitative content analysis approach, the study investigates the types of Jataka tales utilized and the methods of their online delivery. The findings reveal that digital platforms have become instrumental in imparting Buddhist values to children and adolescents through creatively adapted Jataka tales. This research contributes to the development of more relevant religious education strategies in the digital age and highlights the role of literature in character education. In conclusion, classical tales such as the Jataka can serve as powerful tools for moral and ethical development through innovative digital approaches.

Abstract

Lekra fought to restore love for native culture and culture originating from the people who have high moral values. The people in question are farmers and laborers who are the source of the birth of Indonesian culture. From there, Lekra fought so that the culture carried by the people, especially farmers and laborers, could remain strong and not just as entertainment, but for the welfare of the working class. For Lekra, all efforts in art and literature are only for the people because art and literature are truly for the people. The purpose of this study is to write the historical discourse of Lekra literary works in carrying out political missions in the struggle of the working class in Indonesia. This study uses a qualitative research type with a historiographic approach. The research data refers to a group of information from reading texts. The data sources for this study are various information in the form of newspaper texts, books, articles, and videos that explain the historical discourse of Lekra's political literary mission. The data collection technique for this study was carried out using reading, note-taking, and document study techniques. The results of this research are that there are three things in the political mission of Lekra writers in the working class struggle in Indonesia: (1) unilateral action by farmers and workers as a source of inspiration, (2) the partisanship of Lekra writers in the working class resistance, and (3) the political mission of raising awareness for farmers and workers.
