Abstract

Ibu language is one of languages in North Maluku that has reached its peak of extinction. Currently, only one speaker left and able to communicate because the other two-speakers have been old and sick. Additionally, the younger generations have changed thei mother-tongue into Ternate Language, the official language of Ternate Sultanate. Besides, they also use the Malay language which has been known since past trade when Ternate Island became one of the Silk Road points. The use of Malay language is also continued because Indonesia has chosen Malay-Riau dialect, official called Indonesian Language, as the language of Indonesian country. Through interviews, the data of Ibu speakers from 80 years ago until now were used to open up the behavior patterns of Ibu speakers. In addition, this research also utilizes secondary data which discusses the history of empire and trade in the Ternate Sultanate and the Islands around Ternare, to understand the causes of Ibu language extinction.

Abstract

This article tries to explain the language extinction phenomena in Indonesia particularly in accordance with factors that can cause the language extinction and its ethnolinguistic implications. There are some factors that can be identified as the reasons so that many languages are in the threshold of extinction. Those are the effects of major language, bilingual or multilingual community, globalization, migration, intermarriage, natural disaster, lack of appreciation towards ethnic language, lack of communication intensity using ethnic language in many domains, economic, and bahasa. Meanwhile, the language extinction can ethnolinguistically bring some implications. By the extinction of a language it could be the loss of knowledge on the internal aspects of it, that is, its structure. On the other side, it can bring implications to a loss of local knowledge and other cultural wealth of a certain ethnic using the language because they can only be known through the language used by its community, unless the language has been documented and revitalized. Abstract

Local people who live around National Park do not have access to participate in forest management. This condition seriously force people to pratice forest squatting and illegal logging. Illegal logging activities, for instance, having its close link with the negliance of local people to involve in National Park Management. To settle down the difference, Management of Gunung Leuser National Park at Bukit Lawang invited people who reside close to the conservation site; to take part in a program named “Ecotourism Program”. Participation of people in Ecotourism Program has two purposes namely: to avoid deforestation and to generate people’s awareness on sustainable forest management. Abstract
