Abstract

Burns are a global public health problem, with approximately 180,000 deaths each year. The incidence of second-degree burns in Indonesia accounts for 46.7%. Redness, swelling, ulcers, and severe pain characterize these wounds. This study aims to test the effectiveness, percentage of healing, and length of gel application of a combination of star fruit leaf extract and aloe vera leaf pulp on the healing of second-degree burns in male rats. Morton's method was used in this study to measure the diameter of the burn wound. The treatments of this study included a combination gel of star fruit leaf extract and aloe vera leaf with variations in the ratio of F1 (6%: 5%), F2 (6%: 10%), F3 (12%: 5%), and the control group with 5 replicates each group. The results showed that the gel combination of extracts of star fruit leaves and aloe vera leaves effectively treated burn wounds in rats. Duncan's test of the treatment of variations in extract concentration showed a significant difference. The combination of starfruit leaf extract and aloe vera in gel preparation has effectively healed burns in male mice. The duration of administration is 16 days, with the percentage of healing for categories F1, F2, and F3 being 45%, 55%, and 61%, respectively. Burn wound healing activity occurs because the two extracts used contain alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, which act as anti-inflammatories, increase the growth of epithelial cells and collagen, and help the formation of new tissues.

Abstract

Hemodialysis is an early procedure that can quickly save the lives of patients with end-stage renal disease. Various studies show inconsistent results for several factors related to sociodemographics, such as age, gender, education, occupation, and income. Hemoglobin levels and hemodialysis access are rarely discussed, and the length of undergoing hemodialysis is rarely discussed. Therefore, this study investigates the variables related to the quality of life of chronic renal failure patients receiving hemodialysis. This study is a descriptive correlational study using a cross-sectional design. Purposive sampling was conducted with 60 chronic renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis from July to October 2023 at Abdul Wahab Sjahranie Regional General Hospital, Samarinda. This research instrument uses a questionnaire; the first part is a fill-in sheet that includes (age, gender, education, occupation, income, length of hemodialysis, hemoglobin (HB) level, and hemodialysis access (HD). The second component is an instrument used by researchers to assess the patient's quality of life, the WHOQoL instrument. The logistic regression test was utilized in the statistical analysis. The length of hemodialysis is the most dominant factor in the quality of life of patients with kidney failure undergoing hemodialysis (p-value=0.029, with Odd-Ratio (OR)=10.86, 95%CI=1.282-92.036). The results of this study indicate that the length of hemodialysis is the most dominant factor in the patient's quality of life. Thus, it is important to make educational efforts and provide assistance to family and peer nurses during hemodialysis to prevent the emergence of negative thoughts that worsen the quality of life for patients.

Abstract

Heart failure is a chronic disease that has a significant impact on the physical and psychological condition of the patient. A critical aspect of disease management is illness acceptance, which is the patient's ability to accept their condition positively. Family support has a crucial role in helping patients undergo this acceptance process. This study aims to analyze the relationship between family support and acceptance of illness in heart failure patients. The method used in this study is correlative analysis with a quantitative approach, a sample of 149 respondents was collected using a purposive sampling technique. The research was conducted at the General Hospital of Surakarta. Research data were collected using demographic questionnaires, family support, and acceptance of illness (ais). The results showed a positive and significant relationship between family support and acceptance of illness in heart failure patients with a p-value of 0.007 (p <0.05). Patients receiving family support in the form of emotional, instrumental, appreciation, and informational have an acceptance level of illness compared to patients who lack support. Family support helps patients manage emotions, improve treatment adherence, and adjust to necessary lifestyle changes. The conclusion of this study confirms that family support plays an essential role in increasing acceptance of illness in heart failure patients. After obtaining a p-value of 0.007, which means (p < 0.05) the null hypothesis (ho) is rejected.

Abstract

Work-family Conflict (WFC) is a significant issue for working mothers, affecting their well-being and family dynamics. This review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of various interventions to reduce WFC. This study using a systematic review was conducted with the PICO framework. Studies were selected based on criteria including working mothers with children (infancy to school age), full-text availability, English language, and publications from 2014 to 2024. The risk of bias was assessed using the JBI Critical Appraisal Tools, and the results were synthesized through a narrative synthesis. Out of 258 articles screened, 5 studies met the inclusion criteria. The review found that interventions such as Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), time management training, multimedia education, resilience training, stress management, and self-reflection effectively reduced work-family conflict (WFC), thereby improving both mental health and work-family balance. The main limitation of this review is the small number of included studies and variability in methodologies. Future research should focus on integrating diverse interventions and exploring long-term effects. The findings highlight the role of Occupational Health Nurses (OHNs) in supporting working mothers in managing work-family conflict (WFC).

Abstract

Perineal rupture is a frequent obstetric complication that may occur during vaginal delivery, either spontaneously or with instrumental assistance. This condition often results in significant perineal pain, potentially hindering the physical recovery and psychological well-being of postpartum women. Non-pharmacological methods, such as Benson’s relaxation technique, have shown promise in managing pain effectively without the risks associated with pharmacological treatments. This quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effectiveness of Benson’s relaxation technique in reducing perineal suture pain in postpartum women. The study involved 32 participants, with 16 women assigned to the experimental group and 16 to the control group. Pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), and the data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. Results revealed a statistically significant reduction in pain scores within the experimental group, with an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000, indicating a p-value well below the 0.05 threshold. These findings support the use of Benson’s relaxation technique as an effective non-pharmacological intervention for alleviating perineal pain. Integrating this method into postpartum care may enhance maternal comfort and expedite recovery, offering healthcare providers a practical and low-risk approach to pain management in clinical settings.

Abstract

The Melanocortin 4 Receptor (MC4R) gene plays a critical role in appetite regulation and energy balance. The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs17782313, located near the MC4R gene, has been widely associated with an increased risk of obesity, primarily through its influence on appetite control and energy homeostasis. Understanding how this genetic variant interacts with dietary intake can offer valuable insights into the pathophysiology of obesity and inform personalized nutritional strategies. This study aims to investigate the role of SNP rs17782313 in dietary factors and obesity risk, with a particular focus on the underlying molecular mechanisms. A narrative literature review was conducted, synthesizing findings from molecular, genetic, and epidemiological studies. The review highlights how rs17782313 may influence MC4R function and how macronutrient intake, particularly carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, modulates this effect. Evidence suggests that nutritional factors can affect gene expression or interact directly with the MC4R pathway, influencing energy intake, metabolic responses, and body weight regulation. Observational studies in various populations confirm the global relevance of these gene-diet interactions. The findings highlight the need for an integrative approach that combines genetics and nutrition to develop individualized interventions for obesity prevention and treatment. Understanding these interactions may contribute to more effective management of obesity and related metabolic disorders by tailoring dietary recommendations to genetic profiles.

Abstract

Caring behavior involves actions rooted in concern, compassion, skill, empathy, responsibility, sensitivity, and support. Previous studies have indicated that many nurses do not exhibit caring behavior, which is influenced by various factors. Research at RSUD Abdul Moeloek revealed that care was primarily focused on physical ailments, with limited nurse presence and inadequate psychological support for patients. Among the 10 respondents, 75% noted that nurses did not display caring behaviors, such as presence, touch, listening, and understanding, while 25% did. This study aims to examine the relationship between work experience and awards with the caring behavior of nurses in the Internal Medicine ward at RSUD Dr. H. Abdul Moeloek, Lampung. Conducted from March to April 2024, this quantitative research used a descriptive-analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 33 respondents were selected through total sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires completed by respondents and researchers. The relationship between independent and dependent variables was tested using the Chi-square test, with univariate and bivariate analysis. Results showed a significant relationship between work experience (p-value=0.007, OR=19.429) and awards (p-value=0.003, OR=13.750) and nurses' caring behavior. It is recommended that the hospital enhance service quality, especially through training, to improve nurses' caring and friendliness towards patients.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem characterized by a toddler's height being below the standard for their age. This condition has long-term impacts on a child’s physical and cognitive development, as well as future productivity. This study was conducted to identify the determinant factors of stunting prevalence in Gunung Lurah Village, Cilongok Subdistrict, Central Java Province, Indonesia. The study employed a case-control design with a descriptive-analytic approach. The instruments used included the Kesehatan Ibu dan Anak book and questionnaires. The population in this study consisted of all mothers with toddlers in Gunung Lurah Village, totaling 648 individuals. The sample included mothers with stunted toddlers, totaling 43 (case group), and mothers with non-stunted toddlers, also totaling 43 (control group), with a 1:1 matching ratio, meaning the number of samples in the control group was equal to that in the case group. Bivariate analysis was conducted using the Chi-Square test, while multivariate analysis employed multiple logistic regression. The Chi-Square test results indicated that five out of nine factors studied had a significant association with stunting (p<0.05), namely parental knowledge (p=0.014), parenting style (p=0.004), exclusive breastfeeding (p=0.030), low birth weight (p=0.012), and socio-economic factors (p=0.001). The multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that socio-economic factors were the most significant determinant of stunting (p=0.001). This study concludes that socio-economic status is the main factor influencing the incidence of stunting. These findings are expected to serve as a basis for designing more effective programs to prevent stunting at the village level.
