Abstract

Empirically visualizing the text being read into pictures, diagrams, or images evidently deepens students’ reading comprehension. Given the evidence of its significance, this study aims to figure out the effect of visualizing the text upon the students’ reading comprehension observed from their cognitive learning styles namely field dependent (FD) and field independent (FI). Due to its purpose, the experimental study, quasy-experimental research to be specific, was carried out. Fifty four fifth-semester students at Universitas Negeri Malang participated in this study. The findings were shockingly contradictory with the empirical evidence provided in previous studies. It is revealed that visualization strategy was proven to be significantly ineffective in enhancing students’ reading comprehension on account for some factors. However, the mean score of FI students in experimental group was slightly above FD students.

Abstract

This article is intended to expose the implication of the results of two long surveys on the existence of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) as a compulsory subject with various names at different universities and colleges in Indonesia. In my first research, it was found out that ESP courses were misleading, misconduct, and amburadul. This situation happened not only at the small and developing universities but also at the established and well-known universities such as University of Indonesia, Padjadjaran University, and Gadjah Mada University. This year (2007), I conducted another research funded by the government on the same topic but different research subjects at some universities in West Sumatera (Andalas Univeristy, State University of Padang, Bung Hatta University, and Eka Sakti University), particularly at  three different study programs: Accounting, Engineering, and Physics.  The data of this research were collected from totally 270 students, 12 ESP lecturers, 9 heads of study programs, 9 senior lecturers, and 3 TEFL experts. The findings of this research supported the previous findings that ESP faces critical problems in its design and implementation for limited professionalism of human resources. Almost all of the lecturers of the ESP courses were never been particularly prepared and trained to teach ESP. No other parties of stakeholders felt responsible for the ESP program, but the ESP lecturer. From the findings of the two researches, the question arises ‘Who should be responsible for the ESP in Indonesia?”

Abstract

In every culture, there are certain things that are not supposed to be speakable or mentioned directly. A number of words are labeled as frivolous, vulgar, or at least inconsiderate. But in communication, for better maintaining social relationship and exchanging ideas, people have to resort to a kind of language which is known as euphemism. This study is aimed at finding out types of euphemism used in the stories of Minangkabau folklore. This folklore is written in Indonesian language, but the idea of the stories reflects the social life of Minangkabau society. The data were taken from 19 stories of Minangkabau folklore written by Navis, A. A. The result of this study shows that conscious, positive euphemism is the type of euphemism mostly used in the stories. The result of this study also shows that euphemism is strongly influenced by culture. A particular expression needs to be euphemized in one culture may be a common expression in other cultures which, therefore, does not need to be euphemized.

Abstract

This paper discusses how far the poem ‘Wogs’ shows the representation of multiculturalism in Australia. The analysis of the poem shows that the establishment of The Australia Multicultural Policy that was planned to create harmony among the Australia plural society, on the other hand,  has caused some tensions particularly between the majority of Anglo-Celtic Australians (referred as AKA in this analysis) and the migrants of non-Anglo-Celtic descendants in Australia (referred as n-AK). The majority class represents  the non-Anglo-Celtic migrants in their country as a threat towards their life-- a threat towards the purity of Anglo-Celtic’s blood, a threat in the job fields, a threat that can lower the Australian high living standard even as a threat that is ambitious to invade the nation. However, at the same time, the poem itself also tries to construct this representation made by the Anglo-Celtic by showing alternative representations, for example: the Anglo-Celtic Australians as lazy citizens, the Anglo-Celtic Australians that are racists and the Anglo-Celtic Australians as the invader of Australia. Thus, by constructing meanings in the poem, we can see that the realities represented by the representative is not real, or not the same as those made by the represented.
