Abstract

This article concerns with a stylistic analysis on a poem in terms of Systemic Functional Linguistics and Verbal Art Semiotics. The writing uses library research, qualitative data, documentary study, descriptive method and intrinsic-objective approach. The semantic analysis results in both automatized and foregrounded meanings. Then the automatized meaning produces lexical cohesion and in turn, it produces subject matter. Meanwhile, the foregrounded meaning produces the literary meaning and in turn, it creates theme. Finally, the analysis indicates that the subject matter is about the Duddon River which flows forever, the literary meaning is about human survival and the theme is about inspiration.

Abstract

This study was written to see the effect of picture strategy inductive model (PWIM) and student self-efficacy to their skills in writing descriptive text. This research is a quasi-experimental design with factorial design. This research data is taken from the result of student writing skill test and self-efficacy questionnaire. Then, the data were analyzed by using t-test and two-way Anova through Minitab 14 application. The results of this study indicate that PWIM strategy has a significant effect on students' writing skill when compared with listing strategy used by teachers in writing teaching. The result shows a t count of 1,900 which is larger than the t-table that is worth 1.684. Then, students with high self-efficacy taught with the PWIM strategy have a better ability to write descriptive text than students taught with a listing strategy, where t counts are 3.160 which is greater than t-tables of 1.812. However, students with low self-efficacy taught by the PWIM strategy do not have a better ability to write descriptive text than students taught by a listing strategy that t-counts 1.730 smaller than t-tables of 1.812 . Furthermore, from the results of the study also found that there is no interaction between teaching strategies with self-efficacy to the writing skills of students where F-count is 0.08 higher than the F-table is 2.58.

Abstract

Conjunctions used to connect sentences and paragraphs are often misused in writing research proposals, especially in subchapter background of the study. Mothertongue interference as the first language is one of the causes. It may lead to difficulty when students have Indonesian concept in their minds but they have to write their thoughts in English because grammatically both languages are different. This research aims at finding out the micro level coherence in writing subchapter background of the study. This research used content analysis and descriptive research design. Six research proposals were taken from the first submission in the early semester. Data were collected by documentation. Data were analysed through three stages. They are data reduction, data description, and data verification. Triangulation was applied to do validity checking. Based on the research result, it is found that students can use conjunctions properly. They can use them based on their functions. Research finding shows that there is only one conjunction misuse among conjunctions found in six research proposals. Students use conjunctions based on their functions. In addition, they are aware of using conjunctions to make readers understand about content and context in subchapter background of the study. It can be concluded that students’ understanding in using conjunctions is good. Keywords: coherence, conjunctions, background of the study TINGKAT KOHERENSI MIKRO PADA KARYA ILMIAH MAHASISWAAbstrakKata penghubung yang digunakan untuk mengaitkan kalimat dan paragraf seringkali tidak digunakan dengan tepat pada penulisan proposal penelitian, terutama bagian subbab latar belakang penelitian.

Abstract

English Department Students as EFL learners must be able to use correct grammar of English well either in oral or written form; nevertheless, based on a prelimenary observation many of the English Department Students of Faculty of Languages, Letters and Arts of State University of Padang committed grammatical deviations when they communicated in English. This article aims at describing the action research about using OHP/LCDP, Role Plays/Language Games, and written exercises as the efforts to improve Grammatical Ability of the English Department Students. The research was carried out in two cycles, and the subjects were a class of education program consisting of thirty students, who were taking Structure 2 at that time. The findings of the research showed that using OHP/LCDP as media of teaching, Role Play/Language Games as oral exercises, and asking the subjects to do two kinds of written exercises (homework from their handbook as usual and their own sentences/paragraphs as assignments) in teaching Structure 2 communicatively improved the students’ grammatical ability either in oral or written forms much more significantly. Their grammatically-oral ability increased by 14.5 points/73.5% (from 21.8 to 36.3) whereas their grammatically-written ability increased by 13.1 points/82.3% (from 19.1 to 32.2) on the average. Thus, the research questions were answered positively, and the hyphotheses were proven.
