Abstract

This study aimed to analyze  analyzes suggestion acts that were spoken by English instructors in conversation classes at the Andalas University Language Center. The purposes purposes of this study are are to identify and explain explain the types of speech acts, taxonomies, modifications, and reasons of the instructor expressing the speech. This study is descriptive study which data are taken from two conversation class instructors in language centre of Andalas University This study is descriptive study which data are taken from two conversation class instructors in language centre of Andalas University. The data are in the form of transcriptions, research notes, and interviews. The data are in the form of transcription, research notes, and interviews. The data are in the form of  The data are in the form of transcription, research notes,, and interviews. The instruments used are observation sheets, audio recordings,, and interview guidelines. The findings indicate indicate that the two instructors expressed different suggestions at each meeting. The highest intensity of appearance of suggestion acts is is seen in the first meeting of the first instructor and the third meeting of the second instructor. Furthermore, the two instructors also express express the same type of taxonomy/suggestion acts as conventionalized forms. Then, a similar fact is is found from the modified aspect, namely subjectivizer. The reasons reason why the instructor expresses suggestions are are influenced by social distance, power,, and imposition. Based on these findings, it is is implied that the suggestion actions action taken by the instructors instructors  are are influenced by the culture of the community and the class context.

Abstract

People necessitate English is not only as a prestige, but it is a compulsory to be able to master English due to certain field. It can be noticed that today people need English for academic and job’s need level. This research reveals the correlation of English materials with academic and job’s need of students of Tata Boga UNP Padang. The correlation covers; English skills, provided topics, and the function of topics to support life skill of the graduates. For research’s execution, researchers use descriptive design. The populations are academic staffs, hotel and restaurant’ waiters/ress in Padang. The research finding shows that the those occupations in Padang need the workers who are able to master four integrated skills in English namely Listening, Speaking, reading, and writing. In fact the focus of English learning and teaching process at Tata Boga UNP is still limited on speaking.

Abstract

This article is aimed at finding different strategies used by male and female sellers while refusing the buyers’ offer. This study was done by using descriptive research design in which the data related to the object of the study were collected to answer the research question. The data of this study are refusals in the bargaining process between sellers and buyers that took place in Pasar Raya Padang. The finding of the research shows that male sellers used non performative statement strategy most frequently which implicitly indicated that they tended to refuse the buyers’ offer in a direct way. Female sellers, on the other hand, used excuse, reason, and explanation strategy most frequently which indicated that they preferred to refuse their buyers’ offer in an indirect way.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe (1) psycological conflict experienced by the main character; (2) psycological symtomps affecting in behavior aspect of main character to solve the problem of life; (3) the value of characterized-education in the novel entitled Kerumunan Terakhir which is relevant as a material of Indonesian learning. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative based on descriptive data that has been found in the research. The main source of data in the research is about the quotation contained in the novel and the interview result with the literature expert. The result of study is about relevance of Kerumunan Terakhir with the learning of Indonesian and character education based on problem whom experienced by main chracter in novel.

Abstract

This study aims to increase student interest in learning to write poetry with epigonal techniques on students of class VII E SMP Negeri 16 Surakarta academic year 2016/2017. This research is a Classroom Action Research (PTK). This research was started from January 2017-August 2017. Data collection techniques used were observation techniques, interviews, tests, field notes, and document analysis. Data analysis techniques used in this study are descriptive comparative and critical analysis. The results of this study are the application of epigonal techniques which can increase student learning interest in learning to write poetry in class VII E SMP Negeri 16 Surakarta Lesson Year 2016/2017. This is seen in cycle I meeting 1, the percentage of students who were active during apperception 75.17%; attention and concentration 75,86%; and students' enthusiasm and enthusiasm when teachers delivered materials of 78.62%. In the second cycle of meeting 2 there was an increase of the students who were active during the apperception was 84.83%; attention and concentration 86,21%; and students' enthusiasm and enthusiasm when teachers delivered material 86.20%.Key words/phrases: Epigonal Techniques, Poetry Writing, Interests, classroom action research, Indonesian PENINGKATAN MINAT SISWA DALAM PEMBELAJARAN MENULIS PUISI MENGGUNAKAN TEKNIK EPIGONAL  AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatan minat siswa dalam pembelajaran menulis puisi dengan teknik epigonal pada siswa kelas VII E SMP 16 Surakarta tahun pelajaran 2016/2017. Penelitian ini merupakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). Penelitian ini dimulai dari Januari 2017-Agustus 2017. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik observasi, wawancara, tes, catatan lapangan, dan analisis dokumen. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif komparatif dan analisis kritis. Hasil penelitian ini adalah penerapan teknik epigonal dapat meningkatkan minat belajar siswa dalam pembelajaran menulis puisi  pada kelas VII E SMP Negeri 16 Surakarta Tahun Pelajaran 2016/2017. Hal ini terlihat pada siklus I pertemuan 1 persentase siswa yang aktif selama apersepsi 75,17%; perhatian dan konsentrasi 75,86%; dankeaktifan dan antusias siswa pada saat guru menyampaikan materi 78,62%. Pada siklus II pertemuan 2 terjadi peningkatan yaitu siswa yang aktif selama apersepsi adalah 84,83%; perhatian dan konsentrasi 86,21%; dankeaktifan dan antusias siswa pada saat guru menyampaikan materi 86,20%.Kata Kunci/frase: teknik epigonal, menulis puisi, minat, penelitian tindakan kelas, bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper reveals an alternative model for teaching reading comprehension at senior high schools. An anticipation guide is a comprehension strategy that is used before reading to activate  students' prior knowledge and build curiosity about a new topic. Before reading, students listen to or read several statements about key concepts presented in the text; they're often structured as a series of statements with which the students can choose to agree or disagree. Anticipation guides stimulate students' interest in a topic and set a purpose for reading.

Abstract

This research aims at describing the reasons, mechanism and forms of self-repair as well as describing the relationship between  the employment of self-repair and SBY as the speaker. Data of the research were SBY’s utterances in an exclusive interview called “Saatnya SBY Bicara” broadcasted by Metro TV. Data were transcribed and analyzed carefully using qualitative method as the main method and quantitative method as the supporting method to provide frequency of data occurance. The research findings show that there are two main reasons of the employment of self-repair by SBY, they are the problems of speaking and understanding. Two mechanism of self-repair found are self-initiated self-repair (SISR) and other-initiated self-repair (OISR). In the mechanism of SISR, SBY employs three forms of repair (R), they are word search, word/phrase replacing, and explanation. These three forms of repair are preceded by two forms of repair-initiation (RI), they are lexical markers and non-lexical markers. In the mechanism of OISR, SBY employs four forms of repair (R), they are accepting, rejecting, explaining and limiting statement. These four forms of repair are preceded by three forms of repair-initiation (RI), they are clarification, non-understanding, and interpretation. The employment of self-repair reflects SBY as the speaker, such as SBY as a competent and careful person, and SBY as  a polite person who tries to maintain good relationship with others and not to hurt others’ feeling.

Abstract

Writing is a skill about pouring an idea or concept in form of write (written). The research which is done in X IPA 2 class of SMA Negeri Karangpandan showed that the value of the student writing skill is still low. This research purpose is to raise a writing skill of the learners which is use a Think Talk Write method. This research is held on March until May. The subjects in this research are the teachers and the student of X IPA 2 class in SMA Negeri Karangpandan. The data is in the form of picture, video, Education of Implementation plan, test result, list of value, transcription of interviewing and field record. The resource of the data include: Informant, Place and Event, and the document. The data validity uses a triangulation method and triangulation data resource. The analysis data technique is use analysis critical technique and descriptive comparative technique. The indicator achievement amount 80% .The research procedure comprise with planning, implementation of the action, and reporting. The Result from this research showed that the application of Think Talk Write method could raise a writing skill based on folklore student of X IPA 2 class in SMA Negeri Karangpandan.Key words: writing short story, folklore, Think Talk Write methodPENINGKATAN KETERAMPILAN MENULIS CERPEN BERDASARKAN CERITA RAKYAT MENGGUNAKAN METODE THINK TALK WRITEAbstrakMenulis merupakan suatu keterampilan dalam menuangkan ide atau gagasan dalam bentuk tulis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan menulis peserta didik dengan menggunakan metode Think Talk Write. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada bulan Maret sampai bulan Mei. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah guru dan peserta didik kelas X IPA 2 SMA Negeri Karangpandan. Data berupa foto, video, rpp, hasil tes, daftar nilai, catatan hasil wawancara dan catatan lapangan. Sumber data meliputi: informan, tempat dan peristiwa, dan dokumen. Keabsahan data menggunakan triangulasi metode dan triangulasi sumber data. Teknik analisis data dengan teknik analisis kritis dan teknik deskriptif komparatif. Indikator ketercapaian sebesar 80%. Prosedur penelitian terdiri perencanaan, pelaksanaan tindakan, dan pelaporan. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan metode Think Talk Write mampu meningkatkan keterampilan menulis cerpen berdasarkan cerita rakyat peserta didik kelas X IPA 2 SMA Negeri Karangpandan.Kata Kunci: menulis cerpen, cerita rakyat, metode Think Talk Write

Abstract

This paper presents one of the ways to improve students’ listening ability in Listening 2 Course. At the English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang listening skill is taught in three different subjects, Listening 1, Listening 2 and Advanced Listening. Listening 2, provides students with the materials of oral communication by English native speakers and English nonnative speakers. Looking at the materials used for Listening 2, it seems that the book does not have enough tasks for the students for it has only two or three tasks for each unit. Those tasks are done in the classroom, and there is no task for homework. Learning Listening as a language skill needs practice inside and outside the classroom.  To overcome the lack of task for Listening subject, assigning students to listen to the English news is one of the ways that can be done by the teachers. By assigning students to listen to the English news, whether radio or TV news, will give them real experiences in understanding spoken language. Abstract

The discussion on English vocabulary teaching is not a new thing, especially when it is about the technique and method used in the teaching-learning process. The purpose of this paper is to disseminate the result of community service experience in teaching vocabulary for elementary students by using thematic songs. This activity is conducted to different grade students that belong to a reading community called Taman Baca Masyarakat Kudi that is located in one of Banyumas subdistricts. The use of songs is in accordance with our community service purpose that is to motivate the students that English is fun to learn. Teaching vocabulary especially to young learners should be fun and and the teacher should avoid monotonous activities. However, some teachers are still stuck in the convensional method, for example by asking students to memorize a stack of vocabulary items without taking into account student’s boredom in doing such task. Songs are considered effective to be used in teaching children because they can trigger children’s creativity and curiousity especially in dealing with vocabulary acquisition.Keyword: teaching,vocabulary, thematic songs, English PENERAPAN LAGU-LAGU BERTEMA DALAM PENGAJARAN KOSAKATA UNTUK SISWA SEKOLAH DASAR DI TAMAN BACA MASYARAKAT KUDI GUNUNG CUNIL BANYUMASAbstrakPembahasan tentang pengajaran kosakata bahasa Inggris bukanlah hal yang baru, terutama bila menyangkut teknik dan metode yang digunakan dalam proses belajar mengajar. Makalah ini bertujuan menyebarkan pengalaman dalam pengabdian kepada masyarakat dalam mengajarkan kosa kata dengan menggunakan lagu-lagu bertema untuk siswa sekolah dasar. Aktivitas ini dilaksanakan dalam sekelompok siswa sekolah dasar yang berasal dari kelas berbeda yang tergabung dalam komunitas baca bernama Taman Baca Masyarakat Kudi yang terletak di salah satu kecamatan Banyumas. Penggunaan lagu sesuai dengan tujuan pelayanan masyarakat kita, yaitu untuk memotivasi siswa bahwa bahasa Inggris itu menyenangkan untuk dipelajari. Lagu dianggap efektif untuk digunakan dalam mengajar anak-anak karena bisa memicu kreativitas dan rasa ingin tahu anak-anak terutama dalam kaitannya dengan proses pemerolehan kosakata.Kata kunci: pengajaran, kosakata, lagu tematik, bahasa Inggris
