Abstract

Title: Unburned Rice Husk as an Alternative Additive in the Making of White Soil Brick   Top soil structure in Kupang city and regency consist of  white soil which contain 30-65% sand. This kind of soil is very potential as brick-making material. The experiments carried out turned out that white soil bricks  with rice husks additive without going through the combustion process could reach a compressive strength of 100.9 kg/cm² at a ratio of 1 cement: 7 white soil: 1 rice husk. Without being burned to ashes, rice husks can strengthen white soil bricks. In a previous study, bricks without husk additive with a ratio of 1 cement: 7 white soil with a brick size of 24 x 11 x 6 only reached 51.9 kg/cm² (Bebhe et al., 2020). Meanwhile, in another experiment, white soil brick added with rice husk ash with a size of 23 x 11 x 5 cm could reach 114.3 kg/cm² (Bebhe & Daton, 2021). This proves that rice husks as additive material can increase the compressive strength of white soil bricks .The results of this experiment about compressive strength could exceed the compressive strength of grades 1 and 2 based on SNI 03-0349-1989. For loaded and unprotected wall construction, loaded and protected wall construction, and unencumbered and protected wall construction based on SNI 03-6881.1-2002.   Keywords: white soil brick,  rice husk, compressive strength, wall construction.

Abstract

Title: Gated Community A Portrait of Social Gaps. Case Study: Casa Grande Real Estate in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region Province   The rapid development of Yogyakarta affects the spread of housing areas to the region of Sleman Regency. Various types of housing overgrow. The middle-high accommodations are usually exclusive and surrounded by fences. The gated community has become a trend for the community’s privacy and security. A gated community's existence can potentially create social gaps between residents and local people. Based on the background, the study’s purpose of identifying social gaps caused by the gated community and the influencing architectural elements. The study implemented a qualitative research method with a case study approach comparing the case with other cases as the context. The study was done in Casa Grande real estate compared to Bale Hinggil and Pesona Merapi real estate. The three cases are in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region Province. The study results show that the fences bordering the housing community strengthen the concept of “the others” as dangerous people that must be watched over. However, the development of social media changes the restricted relation into partnership relations. Social segregation that groups people according to economic class is shifting. However, a gated community still exists to meet modern society’s needs, lifestyle, privacy, comfort, and security.

Abstract

Title: David Frank Adjaye’s Design Thinking: The Unfold Cinematically Approach   Design thinking is fundamental to every designer because it becomes a strategy that creatively solves design problems. Adjaye, an architect with various degrees and awards, explicitly stated that the approach used was "The Unfold Cinematically". The excellence of this approach deserves to be expressed to provide insight and inspiration, that designing is not by generalizing the form of design, because every place has its uniqueness. The method used is descriptive qualitative. Data was collected from literature studies, books, articles, and official websites that refer to Adjaye and his works. The results of this study show that this approach reflects his life journey from moving countries so that the character to respect differences in cultural values is formed. "The Unfold Cinematically" then developed into a link between the process consisting of "The Inside" and "The Outside". The conclusion is that the formation of design thinking is a process of a long life journey. Sensitivity to various conditions determines the formation of an architect’s design thinking. The approach of "The Unfold Cinematically" summarizes Adjaye’s focus on the livelihood of social activities and physical forms that are formed from the environment of values held by the community.

Abstract

Title: Modeling Temporary Shelter Modular Design Based on Material Locality in Hargotirto Village, Kokap District, Kulon Progo Regency   Hargotirto village has an area that is prone to landslides. Several times the landslides caused the affected communities to be forced to flee to temporary shelters with several problems, such as the absence of private space for refugees and the lack of supporting facilities. The modular temporary shelter model developed through this research is expected to create advantages in terms of provision, time, and quality. The modeled temporary housing also considers local elements such as local building architecture, craftsman skills, and local materials obtained from local raw materials. Material locality data were collected through field observation surveys and guided interviews with residents and builders. The research method used is simulation and modeling research through modeling the form of temporary housing that considers the use of local materials such as wood and bamboo, the strength of modular construction, and variations in space requirements. To check the structural strength and construction details of each developed model using SAP2000 software. Several alternative models have been developed, taking into account the availability of local materials, the condition of the land area, and a series of modules in the form of single or row shelters that provide shared space for refugees.

Abstract

Title: Typology of Malay Vernacular Architecture Uma Kabuong Limo in Pulau Belimbing Village, Kampar District   One form of residential culture can be seen in the architecture as a residence for the people of Belimbing Island Village, Kampar regency. The house as a residential function always develops according to the needs and image of the owner, so changes in the Uma Kabuong Limo building are found. Uma Kabuong Limo can be categorized as vernacular architecture because Uma Kabuong Limo is a product and name that has existed for several generations with a development process that adapts the socio-cultural and cultural of the Malay community. The nature of this simplicity is not only a residential building but also becomes the identity of the community. Through the study of the architectural typology of Uma Kabuong Limo was studied through the approach of the computational model of heritage building information modeling (HBIM). This modeling is expected to get an in-depth and precise analysis to describe the typology process more accurately. This assessment process begins with field data observation, modeling, and discussion of building typologies. The Uma Kabuong Limo buildings observed are six buildings representing the distribution of facilities in The Belimbing Island Village. The findings were the existence of a slightly different basic shape equation in the kitchen. One of the buildings changed the shape of the roof, called the paranginan roof, a multi-storey roof. The more engravings and tidiness of home making depict, the higher the level of the social status of the building owner.
