Abstract

Title: Coefficient Absorpsi Analysis from Patchwork Material and Banana Midrib Preliminary research related composite waste material and nature has done. This research continues the previous research with a more accurate testing method using impedance tubes. Material samples made in this study are samples that have a greater NR (Noise Reduction) value in previous studies. Material samples were made as many as 4 samples with different substance variables, namely fine composite samples, rough composites, banana midrib, and combinations (fine composites and banana midrib). Three samples were mold using a tube with a diameter of 30 mm and a height of 70 mm while one sample combination was a material that was combined to reach a height of 50 mm. From the test results, the addition of cavity affects the absorption coefficient value, therefore the use of this material in buildings must use an air cavity so that the absorption coefficient value increases. Samples that have character as sound absorbing material are fine composite materials, banana fronds, and combination materials because they have an absorption coefficient value (?) of more than 0.30. The combination material has the highest NRC value among the other samples that is equal to 0.57.

Abstract

Title: New Communication of The Architecture Firms in Pandemic Era; Following the Homi  K Bhabha Post Colonial View A new order called the new normal is a central issue at this time. The period before the pandemic which became a standard value and became a reference suddenly was not compatible with the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak. This is happening in Indonesia and around the world. Everyone is in a pandemic situation for a certain period time and there is no certainty that it will end. This of course also affects how to communicate in all aspects including the architectural bureau. New ways of communicating are carried out at architectural bureaus related to social distancing and physical distancing which are considered as effective prevention methods from the COVID-19 pandemic. The types of communication that have changed are communication with clients, communication with the team and communication with interns. There are significant differences in how to communicate from offline activities to online activities where we can still be connected both ways but not in the same place. This situation is a momentum to free the bonds of limitations that have occurred in terms of communication. We want to interpret this in the postcolonialism approach of Homi K Bhabha which is very relevant to the views of hybridity, ambivalence and the third space as a way of communicating new normal discourses.

Abstract

Title: Campus Readiness Toward Lecture Activities in the New Normal Era The Covid-19 pandemic, which has been going on for so long, is not yet known when it will end. Under these conditions, all activities that involve large numbers of people need to seek prevention against the risk of disease transmission. Lecture activities that are usually carried out face-to-face (offline) are currently conducted online. However, at certain times the lecture activities must be done offline. At the Department of Architecture – Duta Wacana Christain University (UKDW), some of the offline lecture activities are carried out in the studio room. Although not every day, this activity still has a chance for disease transmission. For this reason, offline lectures at UKDW need to be reviewed so that all activities that take place on campus can prevent disease transmission as much as possible. Regulation of the Minister of Health regarding health protocols and other related regulations are used to identify the readiness of lecture rooms, especially studio rooms in which the lecture activities in the Architecture Department - UKDW are carried out. The problem that happens is the risk of transmission due to the level of readiness of the studio room and the layout of the furniture in fulfilling the standard health protocol. This study applies a descriptive - qualitative method with data taken from observation and interviews. The results of the examination of the studio rooms show that the studio rooms still need to be adapted to standard health protocols and other applicable regulations.

Abstract

Title: A Nusantara Architecture Touch on Building Construction Science: A Strategy to  Improve Quality for Online Teaching Covid-19 pandemic hit the world hard, causing so many pedagogical reconfiguration and alteration that forces the world of education to change its approach, particularly in the applied science of architectural. This shift seems to be positive in terms of time available to rediscover and realign its relevance towards local wisdom. Visual communication during online class appears to be more interesting due to its capability to showcasing appealing sketch on PC/laptop or smartphone. This situation gives teacher and lecturer even greater chance to accommodate in-depth local construction materials. In order to achieve better formula, innovation are needed to boost visual appeal. By using online devices, students are capable of capitalizing features which ensure their understanding and focus through 3-D structures and visualization, especially towards roof that has been an instrumental character of Nusantara Architecture.

Abstract

Title: Carrying Capacity Related to Batik Waste Processing in Giriloyo Batik Village, Bantul District, Yogyakarta Yogyakarta is one of the areas in Indonesia that still maintains its cultural heritage, one of the cultural heritages that is still a source of pride is Batik. This cultural heritage is increasingly in demand by many people because of its very diverse motives and usually these batik motifs describe the characteristics of an area so that they can be used as souvenirs. This higher market demand has made batik production increase, causing new problems, namely environmental pollution as a result of the waste of batik making itself. The purpose of this study was to determine how to dispose of batik waste in Kampung Batik Giriloyo, Yogyakarta, and to analyze its impact on environmental quality. This research uses qualitative research methods with a case study approach. The results showed that some of the batik home producers still dispose of their waste directly into the river, some of them dispose of it in wells without filtration, and some have disposal sites that meet standards. Discharge in the river results in dirty river water and causes the fish in it to die. Direct dumping into the soil causes the surrounding plants to die. Meanwhile, disposal in soil wells without filtration causes soil contamination and there is a concern that it will contaminate nearby well water.

Abstract

Title: Current Architecture: Between Living with Nature and Living within Nature Architecture is the answer to human needs on shelter, from the basic structure copying the structure concept in nature to more complex buildings that can be in harmony or in contrast with the surroundings. Nature and architecture are two distinct but related things, mutually affecting their existence. The two paradigms of architecture; modern and post-modern, have their own views about them. Based on those paradigms, architect must select the position where they and their creations belong. With the case studies of architecture in Indonesia, this paper aims at exploring architects’ points of view about nature and site’s coverage and demanding architects not merely to take sides with human being. Using data collection and descriptive method, this paper will provide overview of which architectural paradigm is better with more attention to the nature and the site’s coverage. Even though the architectures presented in this study are built in contemporary era, their paradigms about nature are different. Some use the paradigm of living with nature, and others use the paradigm of living within nature.

Abstract

Title: Making Use of Google-Street-View for Urban Observation During Covid-19 Pandemic   Data collection in the field of architecture and urban design has been conducted mostly onsite through field survey. Yet, covid-19 pandemic made this activity impossible due to the avoiding physical activities in public area. Field survey in the covid-19 pandemic can be conducted through the make use of Google-Street-View (GSV). However, previous articles did not explain sisytematically the topic in the scope of architecture and urban design which were possible to discuss by using GSV. The article aims to review the implementation of observation technique using GSV to support data collection in the field of architecture and urban design. The research method employs the literature review, and case studies from Indonesian cities and abroad by the narrative method. The result showed that 3 topics of discussions were possible to use the GSV as a tool: streetscape evaluation; reading visual characteristics of the city and town; and architectural conservation. Even though some weaknesses were noticed, this technique of data collection give a flexibility for the user especially the lecturers, researchers, as well as students to complete their data collection.

Abstract

Title: Semiotics to Comprehend The Change in The Meaning of An Ornament   Semiotics is the science of a sign that consists of the structure of the signifier and the signified.  As a medium of communication, a sign serves as a stand of something else or represents an expression message from the maker or owner to another party (interpretant) to be able to read.  (Peirce, 1986 as cited in Chandler, 2007).  Ornamental architecture is a work of art as a sign that is a medium of communication to viewers or related parties, which contains meaning that is not yet known or understood.  The unknown meaning is caused by several types (1. decoration of new creations; 2. historical breakdown; 3. transfer of context; 4. correction of meaning due to discrepancies).  Given that ornamental architecture is a sign of a grammatical "text", it is possible to interpret it using the same scientific approach of signs. Presumably, semiotics is deemed appropriate even though the results of the interpretation are not absolute. The accuracy and experience (object, location, specific time) of the sign interpretant greatly determine the result of the meaning of the sign, besides the influence of the possible socio-cultural, economic, political, religious, technological background factors, typical forms, masses and evaluators.  The success in interpreting the sign proportionally becomes a reference in behaving or acting or placing ornamental architecture more proportionally.  This is where the role of semiotics is very helpful in interpreting the sign of ornamental architecture as a basis for further action. Therefore, all things around that are signs related to our lives can always be treated appropriately.
