Abstract

The title of this research is Depression Symptoms of Nic Sheff in Beautiful Boy by Felix Van Groeningen. The research aims to find out the symptoms of Nic Sheff's depression in the film Beautiful Boy by Felix Van Groeningen. The problem in this study focused on the symptoms of depression of Nic's character, which analyzes the symptoms of depression through 6 aspects of depression according to Beck and Alford. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method in which presents the data in descriptive form. The approach used is a literary psychology approach while researchers use reading and note-taking techniques as data collection techniques. The data in this study used are dialog and scene cuts derived from primary data sources, namely the film Beautiful Boy by Felix Van Groeningen. Secondary data sources are obtained from reference books or documents related to the object of research. The data collection technique used is to collect data using reading and note-taking techniques. Based on the final results of the research conducted on the film Beautiful Boy shows that Nic there are symptoms of depression faced by the main character, namely emotional aspects, cognitive aspects, motivational aspects, physical aspects, delusions, and hallucinations.

Abstract

Sociolinguistics and language are closely related. Sociolinguistics studies speakers and listeners of languages by studying various aspects. In this attachment between social and language, the application taken is sociolinguistics in jargon. Jargon is a special term used in a certain scope. Based on this research, it is known that researchers found various types of jargon. Jargon is not only special words that exist within the scope of society, but is also found in online games. In this study, the Mobile Legend Online Game is the object of analysis chosen by the researcher. Data collection and completion of analysis using a qualitative descriptive research type. The output of this study is a sociolinguistic analysis of the meaning of jargon in the Mobile Legend Online Game, using data reduction techniques, data display, and conclusion verification. The data taken is also based on terms that are often used by users of this game to communicate with fellow teams. Researchers have found 16 jargons that have denotative meanings and 10 jargons that have connotative meanings in the Mobile Legend Online Game. With the results of this study, the researcher hopes that this research can become significant data for the linguistic community and can also be a source of data, data benchmarks, and comparisons for future researchers, especially research on sociolinguistics. Based on this research, it is hoped that the results can add insight to readers about the meaning of jargon in various game situations and how it is used in conversations among users of the Mobile Legend Online Game.

Abstract

In the midst of the Covid-19 epidemic, many sectors are affected including education sectors. Teaching-learning activities are commanded to be held online, one of which is through Zoom Meeting application. The purposes of this research are to investigate the perceptions of lecturer and students towards online learning using Zoom meeting, to find out the advantages and disadvantages of online learning through Zoom meetings, and to figure out the students' participation during online learning through Zoom meetings. A descriptive qualitative method is used in this study. To collect the data, some techniques are used involving questionnaire, observation, and semi-structured interview. The questionnaire adapted from Roudlotun Nurul Laili and Muhammad Nasir (2020) and Minhas, et al (2021) was distributed to the fourth semester students and the lecturer of a private university in Sumedang. The findings show that the perceptions of students and lecturer about Zoom Meeting as an online learning application media are very diverse, but this Zoom Meeting application is arguably still effective for online learning. There are some advantages of online learning through Zoom Meeting, such as its flexibility to be used anywhere and on any type of gadget and its beneficial features that make easy for learning activities to take place. Apart from that, there are also disadvantages of using Zoom Meeting as a learning medium. The results show that it wastes a lot of internet data and the internet connection is not stable. The students participate more actively in a smaller scale of class or breakout room than in a large class during online learning.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a digital storybook based on the TBLT method as a facility for literacy activities for grade 8 students at SMP Negeri 4 Singaraja. The method used in this research is the methodology of Richey and Klein (2014), namely the Design and Development research model. The data obtained in this study were collected with data collection instruments in the form of questionnaire interviews, observation, and document analysis. The quality of the digital storybook has been assessed by two experts with very good results and is tend to be valid to be used for learning media and encouraging literacy activities of grade 8 students.  This digital storybook has been trialed in small groups of grade 8 to get responses and conduct formative assessments. The results obtained from the trial of digital storybooks based on the TBLT method with "Recount Text" material for grade 8 can help teachers and students in creating innovative and communicative learning activities through the tasks contained in the storybook. This digital storybook product helps students in facilitate literacy activities.

Abstract

This study aimed at developing English learning materials for the front office of 11th grade students. ESP-based goals in teaching English were mastery of English language skills specifically for students in the field of study following the program of study chosen by the students previously. This study employed the D&D model proposed by Richey and Klein (2014) with the ADDE steps. The subjects of this study were front office teachers and students of 11th grade, especially in class XI AP 5 conducted at SMKN 2 Singaraja and the object of this study was the English materials of the front office. Interviews with teachers, administrating questionnaires, and document analysis were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of the study showed that the English Learning Material of Front Office for 11th Grade Students Vocational High School of Tourism Major at SMKN 2 Singaraja was categorized as "very good" material. It was taken from the result of the expert judgment which was the expert 1 provided value "98" and the expert 2 "98". Based on the evaluation phase judged by two experts, the learning materials conducted was appropriate to be used by students.

Abstract

The research was aimed at describing happiness represented in the poem “Foresight” by William Wordsworth. The happiness on the poem was analysed through characters, figurative languages, and imageries that built the poem. The research was conducted by means of descriptive qualitative research method with objective approach. The data of the research were words and phrases obtained from lyrics on the poem. The data were then collected and analysed. The techniques of analysing data applied were reducing, presenting and drawing conclusion. The results of the research show that there are three figurative on the poem “Foresight” by William Wordsworth, such as metaphor, simile, and personification. Meanwhile, the imageries acquired from the poem “Foresight” by William Wordsworth are kinesthetic imagery, visual imagery, auditory imagery, and tacticle imagery. Furthermore, the poem “Foresight” by William Wordsworth represents happiness in the form of the beauty nature such as flowers and strawberry gardens.

Abstract

Most English students are still confused about the types of sentences and how to identify them. Also, most English students are not aware of the types of sentences. This study identifies what types of sentences are found in some short stories on the Story Weaver website and what type of sentence is mostly used. The qualitative method is applied, and a simple calculation is used to identify the frequency of each type of sentence. There are 12 stories with different levels based on most read by people. The data taken from the Story Weaver website and divided into four short stories with levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 based on the sorts of sentences: simple sentence, compound sentence, complex sentence, and compound-complex sentence. The data is selected by the most read people for each level. The data referring to sentences were identified and selected based on their types. The sentences were analyzed by their structure and types sentences based on the theory of Loberger and Shoup (2009). The result shows that the stories consist of 563 sentences. There are 374 of simple sentences, 35 compound sentences, 137 complex sentences, and 17 compound-complex sentences. From the result, it can be concluded that the most used type of sentence is simple sentence. The reason underlying the finding is that a simple sentence is suitable for beginners with easy words to help the reader quickly grasp the main point being made. Also, they convey a clear idea concisely and straightforwardly. In addition, simple sentences are commonly used because they are easier to read and understand, particularly for non-native speakers or those with limited language skills.

Abstract

Conversation is one of our activities in communicating. As social beings, it isimportant for us to be able to interact with each other in order to strengthen arelationship. To understand more deeply the conversation, it can be done with ananalytical model. One of the analyzes that we can use is the analysis of adjacency pairs which according to Yule is included in the study. Adjacency pair is a two-part exchange where the first utterance is functionally dependent on the response of the secondutterance. Using adjacency pairs can help us to more easily analyze the conversationsor communications that we do. This study aims to determine the feedback between the conversations that have been carried out. In a conversation there is a need for reciprocitybetween the questioner and the answerer so that the conversation can be said to go well.Data collection is done by observing and watching methods. In short, the results of thisstudy are useful as input for people who are having conversations. In this research,Conversation Analysis Theory is used to analyze a talk show between Najwa Shihab,Andre and Sule on "The Best Of Ini Talkshow"

Abstract

The implementation of this research aims to develop a textbook for English for Housekeeping for grade XI semester 1, majoring in hospitality at SMKN 1 Singaraja, Buleleng. English subject used in schools is still general, did not specific based on each student's major yet, and there was no learning material in accordance with the Merdeka Curriculum. The research method used is Design and Development (D&D) by Richey and Klein (2009) in Sugiyono (2017), in which there are three stages, namely Planning, Production, and Evaluation. The data analysis technique in this study uses with qualitative and quantitative methods.  Based on the data, it was found that teachers and students need specific English with the hospitality major and an interesting English textbooks for Housekeeping. There are three learning units developed using Hutchinson and Waters' (1987) theory, namely 1) Provision and Preparation for Housekeeping Services, 2) Public Area Section, and 3) Handling Lost and Found for Guests. The results of this study are the English Textbook for Housekeeping which was evaluated by the two previous experts using a checklist questionnaire by Lizt (2005) on a Lickert scale. From the results of the expert's evaluation, calculated using the percentage formula and the Mean by Suharto (2006), it was known that the quality of the textbook English for Housekeeping is in the very good category based on the range of assessments by Suharto (2006). Therefore, this textbook can be used by teachers and students to explore English material, especially for Housekeeping subjects

Abstract

This research analyses poetry using Roman Ingarden's Srata. In this research, descriptive quantitative method is used because the data used are words. In analysing the poem A Psalm of Life, the descriptive descriptive research method is used with the Roman Ingarden stratum approach and the literature study analysis technique. In the stratum of romance ingarden itself there are five layers of norms, namely the layer of sound, the layer of meaning, the layer of objects, the layer of the world, and the metaphysical layer. In the second layer there are meanings which result from this layer of meaning found the next layers which indicate that each layer is a whole structure. The conclusion from the research that has been done is that the poem A Psalm Of Life by Henry Wardswort Langfellow has all the layers of sound, meaning, object, world, and metaphysical norms. However, not all poems have metaphysical layers.
