Abstract

The aging process results in muscle weakness, physical decline, and various degenerative diseases. These factors significantly affect the quality of life of the elderly, as they reduce independence and force them to rely on others for assistance. This study aimed to analyze the factors affecting the quality of life of the elderly in the working area of the Medan Denai Public Health Center in 2025. A quantitative research approach with a descriptive correlational design was used. The research was conducted from July 2024 to January 2025 at the Medan Denai Health Center. The sample consisted of 143 elderly individuals selected through accidental sampling, specifically those who visited the health center for treatment or consultation. The results showed a significant relationship between quality of life and several variables: gender (p = 0.001), marital status (p = 0.000), income (p = 0.005), stress (p = 0.005), social interaction (p = 0.007), and family support (p = 0.001). The most dominant factor influencing the quality of life was family support. Therefore, it is recommended that the elderly receive sufficient support to remain active and independent in their daily activities. Social interaction with peers should be encouraged to prevent loneliness, which could lead to stress. Furthermore, providing educational support and involving retired or non-working elderly in light, non-competitive, and deadline-free tasks can enhance their sense of productivity and usefulness within the family. Health centers are encouraged to continue supporting the elderly and to conduct family education programs to promote independence and activity among elderly individuals in their daily routines

Abstract

Indonesia sends hundreds of thousands of Hajj pilgrims every year. Many pilgrims depart at an elderly age due to limited quotas and long waiting periods. This situation contributes to the recurrence of health problems among Hajj pilgrims. The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors associated with morbidity among Hajj pilgrims from Medan City in 2024. This research employed a descriptive-analytic approach with a cross-sectional study design. The study was conducted at the Health Quarantine Office of North Sumatra Province from August 2024 to February 2025. The results showed significant associations between age (p-value 0.000), medical history (p-value 0.000), istithaah (physical/medical eligibility) status (p-value 0.001), and health risk status (p-value 0.000) with morbidity among Hajj pilgrims in Medan City. The most dominant factor influencing morbidity was high-risk health status, with an Exp(B) value of 19.745 and a p-value of 0.000. It is recommended that the Ministry of Religious Affairs establish a maximum age limit for Hajj registration, taking into account the waiting period until the Hajj is performed, to help ensure pilgrims are not too old to perform the pilgrimage. Additionally, it is advised that the Medan City Port Health Office (BKK) be more proactive and responsive in managing high-risk prospective pilgrims by providing training for healthcare workers.

Abstract

The birth length of a baby reflects linear growth during pregnancy, and growth disorders present at birth can hinder physical development in the future. In 2022, the prevalence of stunting in Serang City was 23,8%, as reported by the Indonesian Nutritional Status Study, highlighting the need for further research into factors affecting birth length, particularly maternal health. This study aimed to determine the impact of maternal nutritional status and hypertension during pregnancy on the birth length of babies. Using an analytical observational design with a retrospective cohort approach, the study involved 50 respondents from June to August 2024 in the working areas of the Singandaru Health Center, Serang City Health Center, and Walantaka Health Center. Data analysis included univariate analysis of frequency and percentage distributions and bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test. Results revealed that 18% of respondents gave birth to babies with low birth length, 26% of mothers faced a risk of chronic energy deficiency during pregnancy, and 18% experienced gestational hypertension. The nutritional status of pregnant women (p = 0,679, RR = 1,423) and hypertension during pregnancy (p = 0,334, RR = 2,278) showed no significant influence on the birth length of the baby. Based on the results of this study, there was no significant effect of maternal nutritional status and pregnancy-induced hypertension on the baby's birth length. However, maintaining adequate nutritional status and stable blood pressure remains essential to support overall maternal and fetal health during pregnancy.

Abstract

Pectin is a soluble dietary fiber component commonly found in plant cell walls and has garnered significant attention in the field of functional foods due to its diverse health benefits. This article aims to systematically review scientific evidence regarding the health benefits of pectin and its recommended consumption dosage. The method used is a literature review by collecting articles from various scientific databases such as Google Scholar and PubMed within the range of 2014–2024. The review findings indicate that pectin has positive effects in lowering LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood glucose levels. Additionally, pectin shows potential as an anti-cancer agent through the inhibition of Galectin-3, as well as demonstrating immunomodulatory activity and a key role in maintaining gut health. Pectin has also been shown to be safe as a biomaterial based on cytotoxicity tests on human cell cultures. The recommended dosage of pectin varies depending on its intended use, with an effective range in humans between 15–30 grams per day. However, excessive intake may cause mild digestive discomfort such as bloating or gas; therefore, gradual consumption is advised. In conclusion, pectin holds great potential as a functional food component and therapeutic agent. Nevertheless, further research is needed to evaluate its effectiveness in human populations, determine optimal dosage, and explore its interactions with other dietary components. In addition, the development of high-bioavailability pectin-based products could be a strategic approach to maximizing its health benefits.

Abstract

Menarche in teenage girls may increase their risk of anemia relative to boys in the same age category. This research was carried out to explore how educational media affects adolescent girls' perceptions and motivation concerning the use of iron-supplement tablets. The study used a quasi-experimental design, implementing a one-group pretest and post-test method without a control group. Sample selection was conducted via purposive sampling, and data collection utilized questionnaires aimed at evaluating adolescent girls' perceptions and motivations. After the preliminary pretest, an intervention was implemented that featured printed standing banners and digital content, such as videos and digital scrapbooks. Data analysis included employing the paired t-test to detect any variations in perception and motivation prior to and following the media intervention. The outcomes of the statistical analyses showed a notable shift in perception and motivation after exposure to printed standing banner media (p < 0.05). Nevertheless, no notable changes were detected following the interventions of digital video and digital scrapbook media (p ≥ 0.05). The research finds that printed media significantly influences adolescent girls' views and motivation to take iron-supplement tablets more than digital media does.

Abstract

Problems in the health sector remain a major challenge in developing countries, where the role of the government is crucial in ensuring the availability of adequate health services for the community. Improving the quality of health services is one of the important steps to overcome various health problems that occur. The X-PBI group, which is individuals who have not fully met the criteria to receive full assistance (PBI) but still need partial subsidies, often has difficulty maintaining consistency in paying contributions. This study aims to analyze the impact of the increase in National Health Insurance (JKN) contributions on X-PBI participants in Tanjungbalai City in 2025. This study used a qualitative approach with purposive sampling technique to determine informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, and analyzed narratively. The results showed that the Tanjungbalai City local government has taken a number of steps such as providing education about JKN procedures and facilitating access to health services. However, the policy has not been fully effective, especially in improving the quality of services received by independent participants. Limited human resources and budget are the main obstacles in its implementation. Therefore, improving primary care through strengthening facilities, medical personnel, and community-based approaches is needed.
