Abstract

This research focuses on the main character's resistance to discrimination in the novel The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee. The study aims to highlight the gender and racial discrimination experienced by the main character and her resistance to this discrimination. This study utilized a descriptive analysis method, incorporating intrinsic elements such as character, characterization, conflict, setting, and symbols, and extrinsic elements including discrimination and resistance theory. This study utilized library research techniques, specifically examining, and researching literature in novels. The findings revealed that resistance to discrimination can be manifested through both overt and subtle actions, whether openly or discreetly. In summary, the protagonist, Jo Kuan, faced gender discrimination in the form of violations of women's rights, as well as racial discrimination through restrictions and exclusion. These challenges prompted the main character to demonstrate bravery and resilience in resisting oppression. Keywords: Discrimination; Resistance; Gender; Racial

Abstract

This research examines the application of Nida’s (1964) formal equivalence theory in machine translation, with a focus on the structural and grammatical aspects of CNN headlines translated by Bing Translator and DeepL. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach, analyzing translated headlines related to the 2024 United States Election. Data was collected from CNN’s official website from October to November 2024, and translations were obtained from both machine translation tools. The analysis shows that whereas both translation tools attempt to maintain structural accuracy, Bing Translator tends to preserve rigid sentence structures, while DeepL adapts phrases to improve fluency, sometimes at the expense of grammatical accuracy. A readability assessment, based on the researcher’s interpretation, shows that DeepL produces smoother translations, which are more accessible to readers. This research contributes to the machine translation reliability discussion in journalism and emphasizes the challenge of maintaining formal equivalence while ensuring readability. Future research can explore a broader corpus or integrate computational linguistic analysis to improve translation evaluation methodology. Keywords:  Formal Equivalence; Machine Translation; News Translation; Readability;  News Headlines

Abstract

This study investigates the role of context that influences the use of elaborated code (EC) and restricted code (RC) in Asma Elbadawi’s speech on Wardah Heart to Heart talk show episode two. Employing a sociolinguistic approach, this study draws on Bernstein's code theory, as well as Holmes’s context theory using intralingual and extra-lingual commensurate methods. The results show that Asma tends to use EC to convey her message effectively, but she also uses RC in particular situations on the talk show. The findings indicate the use of EC and RC in Asma’s speech is not only influenced by her socio-economic background but also by the situational context of the speech event, such as genre, setting, participants, message content, and purpose. This study contributes to offering a broader perspective in the sociolinguistic field by highlighting how different contexts in a speech event, especially in a talk show, can influence the code usage of an individual.

This exhibition is interesting to analyze due to its unconventional presentation of archives, resembling contemporary art installations. Though detailed descriptions of the exhibition and analysis based on archival theory, this research aims to examine the status and display format of archives in the exhibition. The method used is descriptive qualitative of archive study. The results show that although the presentation resembles installation work, the exhibited objects still meet the criteria of archives as records of performance events. This exhibition expands the understanding of the form and presentation of archives in contemporary art, demonstrating that archives can function not only as historical documents but also as artistic mediums. The archival exhibition approach successfully makes archive the main object while presenting them in a visually appealing form, showing the potential of archives in the context of art galleries. Keywords: archival exhibition, performance art, artefacts

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the character dynamics of the central characters in the novel Lord of the Flies to demonstrate the character development of humans when faced with isolated island due to World War II. This research uses descriptive research method with qualitative approach. The data collection technique involves reading Lord of the Floes and look for experts’ data related with character dynamics of the central character. Data are linked to intrinsic elements, including character and characterization, setting, plot, conflict, symbolism, and irony, and relate them to extrinsic studies covering psychoanalytic theory, the life and death instincts theory, and narcissism theory, all three theories proposed by Sigmund Freud. The results of this study show that the character dynamics experienced by the central characters, Ralph, Jack, and Piggy, are dominated by complex psychological and social factors, including the influence of an isolated environment and group tensions. The central characters play their respective roles. Ralph tends to favor the values of order and morality, Jack is influenced by the death instinct and aggression, whole Piggy retains logic and rationality. In conclusion, this analysis shows that under extreme conditions, human character can change. Humans can lose their moral values due to basic primal drives such as the desire of power, fear, and the tendency to act violently. When tensions rise. The moral principles that guide human behavior seem to disappear, so humans tend to fall into destructive behavior that ignores a sense of empathy and civilization. Keywords:  Central Character; Dynamics; Psychoanalysis; Instinct; Morality

Abstract

This research focuses on the wide-ranging notion of inclusivity looking at cultural studies and highlights the non-Western contexts like Indonesia. Following PRISMA protocols, a systematic literature review was carried out on 45 selected articles published between the years of 2015 and 2025. The findings show that there are three primary themes: culture representation, power relations, and local traditions. It can also be remarked that the western notion of inclusivity seems inadequate when placed in collectivist contexts. ‘Gotong royong’ as an example of Indonesian inclusivity models reflects traditional local customs. Furthermore, decolonial and intersectional frameworks illuminate the enduring socio-historical inequalities that are shaped through identity-based hierarchies within practices of inclusion. This research articulates the need to develop a culturally specific framework of inclusivity which regards inclusivity as multiscopic; rooted in local contexts while applicable worldwide. It seeks to contribute to scholarship and guide policy for more inclusive governance towards social justice.
