Abstract

Introduction: Tooth loss conditions are one of the health problems in the oral cavity that can cause discomfort for sufferers because it interferes with daily activities, such as speaking, chewing, socializing, and self-confidence. Riskesdas in 2018, indicates that 58.7% of the Indonesian population aged 65 and above experience dental and oral problems, such as cavities, missing teeth due to extraction or spontaneous loss, filled teeth due to cavities, and loose teeth. To prevent dental diseases, especially in the elderly, one of the things that can be done is to provide oral health education to the elderly. Counseling activities play a crucial role in the prevention of dental and oral diseases. Methods: Observational study using a descriptive, cross-sectional design, both exposure and outcomes are measured simultaneously. The research method used is a lecture method for 35 minutes, followed by a demonstration on how to brush teeth and use dental floss for 10 minutes, and then concluded with a discussion session with the participants. The respondents are 28 individuals aged 55 years and above at the Wreda Sejahtera Foundation in Bali. Results and Discussion: Based on the distributed questionnaire, it was found that an average of 90.3% of the elderly answered the knowledge questions correctly. This result indicates that the participants were enthusiastic and paid close attention to the counseling material. Conclusion: The counseling activities carried out at the Wreda Sejahtera Bali Foundation were welcomed by the participants with enthusiasm in listening to the material and making the most of the question and answer session. This activity also has a positive impact on the elderly.

Abstract

Introduction: Wound healing using herbal plants is considered safer than chemical drugs. One of the plants that can be used for wound healing is basil leaves (Ocimum basilicum L.). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of administering basil leaf extract gel on the number of fibroblast cells in the healing process of incision wounds in Wistar rats. Research method: This study used an experimental post-test only control group design using 24 male Wistar rats. The research sample was divided into four groups, namely the negative control group (CMC-Na gel), the group given basil leaf extract gel with concentrations of 70%, 80%, and 90%. In vivo testing was carried out by making an incision wound with a length of 20mm and a subcutaneous depth on the back of the rat. The extract was given twice a day for one week, then decapitation was carried out on the 8th day. Research results: Basil extract gel with concentrations of 70%, 80%, and 90% was effective in healing incision wounds. One Way Anova test showed significant differences between the four groups (ρ<0.05). Conclusion: Basil leaf extract gel with a concentration of 80% is more effective in accelerating wound healing

Abstract

Introduction: Necrotic teeth can be maintained with root canal treatment, through three critical stages, namely preparation, sterilization, and filling. Sterilization is one of the critical stages that must be carried out during treatment, and it aims to eliminate as many pathogenic microorganisms as possible through irrigation and medicine. In recent times, there have been many studies on the use of traditional medicine from herbal ingredients as a substitute for chemical drugs. This study aims to determine the inhibitory power produced by moringa leaf extract against mixed bacteria in the root canal. Materials and methods: This study is a laboratory study with a Post Test Control Group Design. The sample groups used were mixed bacteria in the root canal which were divided into 5 groups, namely the group with moringa leaf extract treatment with concentrations of 50%, 75%, and 100%, the treatment group given ChKM as a positive control, and the group treated with distilled water as a negative control, with each repetition 5 times. Moringa leaf extraction was carried out using the maceration method using 96% ethanol solvent. Inhibition zone testing was carried out using the Kirby-Bauer method. Results: The inhibitory power produced at a concentration of 50% was obtained on an average of 10.73mm, a concentration of 75% was obtained on an average of 14.24mm, and a concentration of 100% was obtained on an average of 16.48mm. Conclusion: Moringa oleifera L. leaf extract at concentrations of 50%, 75%, and 100% can inhibit the growth of mixed bacteria in the root canal, with the most effective concentration at 100% Moringa oleifera L. leaf extract.

Abstract

Introduction: Anterior teeth require special attention in terms of aesthetics. Complex aesthetic treatment becomes the main choice in cases of anterior teeth with more than one caries, deformities, malposition and in needs of root canal treatment. Case: A 49-year-old female patient complained of broken upper right and left front teeth due to impact. Objective examination found that the lingual margins of teeth 11, 12 and 13 appeared reddish and bled easily, composite fillings with secondary caries at 21 dentin depths and 22 pulp depths, chipping at 11, 12 and 22. Percussion of tooth 22 (+), pressure test (-) and CE (+). Case Treatment: One visit root canal treatment in 22, direct composite veneer in 11, 21, 22 and composite restoration in 12. Discussions: Complex aesthetic treatment involves more than one anterior tooth that requires root canal treatment as well as correction of shape and position. Determination of shape, tooth proportion, color, position dimension, inclination, smile position and lip line, relationship between teeth, relationship of facial midline to lip midline are required in complex aesthetic treatment. Composite resin is chosen as a restorative material due to aesthetic considerations, faster procedure, low cost, does not take much of healthy tooth structure, easy to be repaired when there is damage and does not damage the opposing teeth. The use of palatal putty index can increase the efficiency of the work and maximize the final result. Conclusion and Suggestions: Complex aesthetic treatment using direct composite veneer is a fast, low-cost treatment option that can provide good aesthetic results in cases of four malformed and malpositioned upper anterior teeth.

Abstract

Introduction: Microbial variations and oral hygiene (OH) status of an individual are related to the oral biofilm formation. The metabolite of microorganisms influences biofilm formation. This research aims to analyse the effect of bacterial isolates' metabolites from a good OH individual on the in vitro biofilm of bacterial isolates from a poor OH individual. Materials and Methods: Spent medium of bacteria isolated from a good OH individual tongue swab that contains different protein and nitrate concentrations was treated in vitro with biofilm from a poor OH individual tongue swab to evaluate the cell viability and in vitro biofilm mass under aerobic conditions. The methods used include the Bradford test, Griess test, Crystal Violet test, and Total Plate Count. Results and Discussions: There were significant differences in the cell viability of bacteria isolated from poor OH individual treated by spent medium isolated from good OH individual with different concentrations of protein and nitrate (p value <0.05), as well as biofilm mass of the sample that was treated with spent medium containing different nitrate concentration (p value < 0.05). Conclusion: The protein and nitrate content in the spent medium from a good OH tongue swab can influence cell viability and in vitro biofilm mass from a poor OH individual tongue swab.

Abstract

Introduction: Dental and oral health problems are still widely found in children, especially at the age of 5-9 years. One of the factors that causes this problem is the lack of children's knowledge which has an impact on children's attitudes and actions towards their dental and oral health. One way that can be done as an effort to prevent dental and oral health problems at a child's age is by educating dental and oral health through flashcard game media. The purpose of this study is to find out the difference in knowledge and attitudes before and after dental and oral health education in students at SDN 013 Palaran, Samarinda City. Research Materials and Methods: This study was a pre-experimental research with a one group pre-test and post-test design. The research respondents came from students in grades 1, 2, and 3 at SDN 013 Palaran, Samarinda City with a sample size of 71 people who met the inclusion criteria. Data collection was carried out by knowledge and attitude questionnaires. The data from the study were analyzed using   the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. Results and Discussion: The results obtained were that most of the students' knowledge before education was in the medium category, which was 53.5%, and after education, the majority of students' knowledge was in the good category, which was 95.8%. The attitude of students before education is more in the medium category, namely 52.1%, and the attitude of students after education mostly shows a good category, which is 88.7%. The difference in knowledge and attitude before and after dental and oral health education showed p < 0.01 Conclusion: There are differences in knowledge and attitudes before and after dental and oral health education in students at SDN 013 Palaran, Samarinda City.

Abstract

Introduction: Gingivitis is inflammation of the gingiva and the initial stage of periodontal disease, which, if not treated, will become periodontitis. Coriander seeds (Coriandrum sativum) have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to determine the effect of 8% ethyl acetate fractionated coriander seed extract gel on the number of neutrophils and fibroblasts in the healing process of gingivitis (in vivo) in Wistar rats. Material and Method: Thirty-six rats were divided into 3 groups: the 8% ethyl acetate fractionated coriander seed extract gel group, the chlorhexidine gel group, and the placebo gel group. Gingivitis was induced by tying a silk ligation to the subgingival area of ​​the lower incisor for 7 days. 0.05 ml of gel was applied twice a day in the gingivitis area. On days 1, 3, 5, and 7, three rats from each group were decapitated, histological preparations were made with HE staining, and the number of neutrophils and fibroblasts was counted using an Optilab microscope with 400x magnification. Healing assessment was measured based on the decrease in the number of neutrophils or the increase in the number of fibroblasts compared to the number of neutrophils or fibroblasts on the initial observation day. Results and Discussions: A significant difference in neutrophil counts was found in the 8% ethyl acetate fractionated coriander seed extract gel group (45.43%) and the placebo gel group (51.67%) on days 3. A significant difference was also found in the number of fibroblast in the 8% ethyl acetate fractionated coriander seed extract gel group (5410%) and the placebo gel group (4470%) on days 5, and between the 8% ethyl acetate fractionated coriander seed extract gel group (8463.33%) and the placebo gel group (7953.33%) on days 7. Conclusion: This research concludes that 8% ethyl acetate fractionated coriander seed extract gel can reduce the number of neutrophils and increase the number of fibroblasts in the gingivitis healing process.

Abstract

Introduction: Oral squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor in oral and originates from the epithelial tissue. Carcinoma formation is a genetic process that triggers changes in cell morphology and behavior. Abnormalities in cell cycle control, regulated by p53 among these factors. This study was conducted to examine the role of p53 and p53-related proteins in the formation of oral squamous cell carcinoma. Review: p53 is a component of the genome associated with the development of cancer in humans. Several studies have suggested that p53 is an important antitumor weapon. In the cell cycle, p53 is recognized if there is a cell mutation or the presence of an oncogene, and delays the cell cycle to prevent cells from becoming cancerous. The level of p53 will increase and react by arresting the cell cycle, directing cells to repair or undergo apoptosis. If p53 does not function, the cell cycle carrying damaged genetic material continues and is unable to undergo apoptosis. As a result, cells continue to proliferate with genetic abnormalities that can lead to malignancy. Conclusion: Loss of p53 function can cause random mutations, chromosomal changes, and aneuploidy, which drive the growth of cancer cells to a malignant state. Analysis of changes at the molecular level can be a major diagnostic tool to guide treatment and identify changes associated with oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Abstract

Introduction: The early loss of primary teeth denotes the loss of teeth in the oral cavity before the typical loss timeframe. The early loss of primary molars markedly impacts masticatory function. Children of elementary school age frequently encounter dental and oral health issues. This study aims to determine the correlation between the premature loss of primary molar teeth and variations in body mass index (BMI) among 7-9-year-old students at Public Elementary School (SDN) 003 Sungai Kunjang. Material and Methods: This study employed an analytical approach with a prospective cohort design. The demographic comprises students aged 7 to 9 years at SDN 003 Sungai Kunjang, Samarinda City, with 233 respondents. Sampling was conducted via a non-probability purposive sampling method. This study utilized oral diagnostic instruments, manual scales, stadiometers, stationery, identity questions, and examination forms. Results and Discussions: Bivariate data analysis employing the chi-square test on the early loss of primary molars and alterations in student BMI indicated that respondents with early loss of primary molars were 8.824 times more likely to exhibit a reduction in BMI than those without early loss of primary molars. Conclusion: The study finds that a correlation exists between the early loss of primary molars and alterations in BMI among 7-9-year-old students at SDN 003 Sungai Kunjang
