Abstract

Stunting is a common malnutrition condition. Stunting conditions can disrupt children's development, including developmental disorders in the oral cavity. Children with stunting are more susceptible to dental caries due to changes in saliva characteristics. The aim of this research is to determine the relationship between stunting and the incidence of dental caries in children in Sungai Kunjang District. This research is a descriptive analytical study that uses a cross-sectional design with saturated sampling techniques. The research respondents were 20 elementary school children who experienced stunting and were recorded by the community health center in Sungai Kunjang District. The research was carried out by intraoral examination of the respondents' oral cavities and checking students' health report books. Research data was processed and analyzed using the Chi-square test. The research results showed that all children with stunting had caries on their teeth with a DEF-T index of 4.95 (high). The results of statistical tests on the relationship between stunting and the incidence of caries show p = 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating that there is a relationship between stunting and the incidence of dental caries in elementary school children in Sungai Kunjang District.

Abstract

Introduction: The early loss of primary teeth denotes the loss of teeth in the oral cavity before the typical loss timeframe. The early loss of primary molars markedly impacts masticatory function. Children of elementary school age frequently encounter dental and oral health issues. This study aims to determine the correlation between the premature loss of primary molar teeth and variations in body mass index (BMI) among 7-9-year-old students at Public Elementary School (SDN) 003 Sungai Kunjang. Material and Methods: This study employed an analytical approach with a prospective cohort design. The demographic comprises students aged 7 to 9 years at SDN 003 Sungai Kunjang, Samarinda City, with 233 respondents. Sampling was conducted via a non-probability purposive sampling method. This study utilized oral diagnostic instruments, manual scales, stadiometers, stationery, identity questions, and examination forms. Results and Discussions: Bivariate data analysis employing the chi-square test on the early loss of primary molars and alterations in student BMI indicated that respondents with early loss of primary molars were 8.824 times more likely to exhibit a reduction in BMI than those without early loss of primary molars. Conclusion: The study finds that a correlation exists between the early loss of primary molars and alterations in BMI among 7-9-year-old students at SDN 003 Sungai Kunjang

Abstract

Abstract

Background: The third molar is the final tooth to emerge in the oral cavity, distinguished by variability in its developmental timing and the potential for its presence or absence, rendering it particularly susceptible to environmental fluctuations during odontogenesis. Consequently, the prevalence of third molar impaction or hereditary absence is the highest among all teeth. The third molar is linked to various clinical problems, such as impaction, ectopic eruption, hard and soft tissue disorders, and agenesis. Tooth agenesis refers to the congenital absence of one or more teeth and is among the most prevalent defects in individuals. Purpose: This study aimed at exploring the distribution of third molar agenesis cases according to gender, jaw involvement, affected side, and the quantity of missing teeth. Methods: This research employed a quantitative methodology characterized by a descriptive observational design. Data were acquired from secondary sources, comprising panoramic radiographs and medical data sourced from Wahab Sjahranie regional General Hospital (RSUD). Results: Agenesis's gender distribution showed more frequency in females (69.2%) than in males (30.8%). Agenesis mainly impacted the maxilla (44.2%), then the mandible (26.9%), then both jaws (28.8%). Furthermore, on the frequency of absent third molars, the most often occurring situation was the absence of one tooth (50.0%), followed by two teeth (28.8%), three teeth (9.6%), and four teeth (11.5%). Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrate that third molar agenesis is more prevalent in females, predominantly occurs in the maxilla, is more frequently unilateral, and typically entails the absence of a single tooth. Keywords: agenesis, panoramic, third molar

Abstract

Background: Down syndrome is a genetic disorder with a high prevalence of periodontal disease. Increased periodontal pocket depth is one of the important indicators in assessing periodontal tissue damage. Factors such as age, sex, nutritional status, and toothbrushing practice are thought to influence periodontal conditions in individuals with Down syndrome. This study aims to analyze the relationship between these factors and periodontal pocket depth values in individuals with Down syndrome.Method: This study used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach involving 40 respondents who met the inclusion criteria. Clinical examination of periodontal pocket depth was carried out using a WHO probe at six points of each tooth. Nutritional status data were obtained through body mass index (BMI) measurements, while toothbrushing practice and respondent characteristics were obtained through structured interviews. Data analysis included Spearman and Chi-square tests with a significance level of p<0,05.Result: The results showed a significant relationship between age (p=0.000; r=0.646) and toothbrushing practice (p=0.008; r=0.412) with periodontal pocket depth. Meanwhile, sex (p=0.726) and nutritional status (p=0.679) did not show a significant relationship with periodontal pocket depth in individuals with Down syndrome. Conclusion: The results showed a significant relationship between age (p=0.000; r=0.646) and toothbrushing practice (p=0.008; r=0.412) with periodontal pocket depth. Meanwhile, sex (p=0.726) and nutritional status (p=0.679) did not show a significant relationship with periodontal pocket depth in individuals with Down syndrome
