Abstract

This research aimed to build a quadruple-helix partnership model between universities, government, industry, and community from the higher education (HE) perspective in creating various innovations to support sustainable regional socio-economic development. This study used exploratory quantitative research to develop, predict the model, and explain the empirical evidence. In addition to the model, this study found that institutional sustainable entrepreneurial culture (SEC) could be developed by transforming the university into an entrepreneurial university (EU) and applying sustainable development goals (SDGs) principles to teaching-researching-community service activities, management and governance, and institutional leadership. This study also confirmed that universities with an SEC cannot directly affect the emergence of various innovations sourced from knowledge and research results but must be mediated by internal consensus within academia and external consensus among partnership actors. The research contributions are aimed at: i) HE policymakers who will transform their institutions into EU as a first step in carrying out the university’s third mission; ii) HE will build quadruple helix partnerships; and iii) Micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) which will take advantage of the innovations offered in the quadruple-helix. In addition, this research deepens the Etzkowitz partnership path model in which HE, a source of knowledge for innovation, becomes more focused in the form of SDGs-based EU.

Abstract

Higher education and training in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are important for the industrial growth and development of any nation. Physics subject provides the basics for training in many STEM areas. However, failure to pursue physics to the end of high school denies learners opportunities in STEM courses. This research employed a correlational design and survey method to examine the relationship of gender traits (GT) and mindset (MS) with learners’ intention to choose physics among 378 high school students randomly sampled. The study adopted the gender traits test and mindset questionnaires. The Chi-square test for the relationship of GT and MS with the intention to choose a physics subject yielded p>0.05. These results revealed that no student is deprived of an opportunity to pursue physics to higher levels on account of their GT or MS. Thus, attempts to increase the number of learners who can potentially pursue STEM courses by studying physics in high school should focus on other known factors other than GT and MS.

Abstract

This study systematically reviews and analyzes previous studies’ literature to identify the research gaps and the steps that must be taken for research on critical thinking in further mathematics education. Two methods, namely bibliometric analysis and descriptive content analysis, were used to achieve this goal. Data for the bibliometric analysis was obtained from the Scopus database, with the keywords “critical thinking” and “mathematics” Documents accessed are limited to the publication range of 2012-2022. The results show that the number of critical thinking research in mathematics has increased significantly, with a peak in 2021 of 65 articles; the United States has the most research and citations. The source that received the most citations was the journal Educational Studies in Mathematics. The evolution of the theme of critical thinking in mathematics began to link critical thinking with collaboration learning, mathematics education, teacher education, engineering, education, and collaborative learning. The quantitative approach with a student sample, tests as data collection instruments, and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) method is the methodology most often used by researchers. The results of this study are likely helpful for other researchers who will examine critical thinking skills in mathematics, namely as a research guide that they will develop. In addition, the existence of several research gaps can motivate other researchers to fill these gaps to contribute to improving the quality of critical thinking in mathematics.

Abstract

The Isabela State University aims to develop graduates equipped with skills and competence required by the industry. The graduate tracer research helps assess graduates’ employability and establish the elements that serve as a framework for enhancing students’ services and instruction. The snowball sampling was adopted and a modified questionnaire was sent via social media to Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) graduates between 2007 to 2019. There were 111 questionnaires fully accomplished received from the graduates. The results of the study show that the most significant factors contributing to employability were their educational qualifications and professional examinations. All the respondents are employed, but they found the BSA curriculum wanting in providing students with the opportunity to develop accounting skills and better prepare themselves for professional examinations. As such, the graduates recommend extending the BSA curriculum to 5 years; the on-the-job-training (OJT) program with accounting firms, and adding the required course audit. Further, to increase the graduates’ employability, the university shall provide students with the opportunity to experience the use of accounting software in actual business operations.

Abstract

During the context of virtual classes due to the pandemic, it was evidenced that many teachers had to face accelerated adaptation stages, which is why teachers presented difficulties in designing their teaching strategies and students showed certain difficulties in their learning. In this sense, this article aims to determine how the professional and personal traits of the teacher are related to their teaching strategies, in the context of COVID-19, from the perspective of the students. For which an investigation was developed with a quantitative approach, correlational level and non-experimental design. It was determined that there is a moderate direct relationship between the professional and personal traits of the teacher with his didactic strategies in the context of virtual teaching. Thus, it was also identified that teachers do not pour their professional experiences into the development of the subject, additionally it does not favor the solution of problems related to real life applications; this leads teacher to reflect on the importance of the construction of student knowledge, especially if it is about subjects that are taught in the last cycles, since the student is waiting for how and in which processes their knowledge will be applied theoretical knowledge.

Abstract

Sustainable leadership practices ensure that the mission and vision of a school continue despite changes and challenges. Such a practice can build the capacity of the organization based on the environment, especially in shaping a better school climate. Past studies have found a significant link between school leadership practices and the school climate. However, there has been little discussion about the phenomenal relationship the in rural national secondary school (SMK) context. Hence, this study aimed to identify the level of sustainable leadership practices of principals and their relationship with the school climate in rural SMK in Malaysia. A total of 450 teachers were selected to participate in the study using proportionate random sampling and questionnaires were adopted as the research method. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the research population located in rural areas, data were collected through the mail. The findings showed that the level of sustainable leadership practices of the principals was high (M=4.18, SD=0.52), along with a high level of the school climate (M=4.14, SD=0.51). Sustainable leadership practices were also positively associated with school climate (r=0.607, p<0.05). These findings can be used by the Ministry of Education Malaysia to enhance sustainable leadership practices in the national education leaders professional qualifications designed specifically for future school leaders in Malaysia. In this regard, it is hoped that these findings will enrich the literature on sustainable leadership practices and the school climate.

Abstract

Affective commitment is ultimately carried out by a leader in an organization, including in high schools. This study mainly aims to examine the influence of personality and job satisfaction on the affective commitment of high school principals mediated by motivation. A quantitative survey was employed in this study. The sample studied was 90 public high school principals in Jakarta, Indonesia. The data were collected through a questionnaire, which has been tested for validity and reliability. The data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) using SmartPLS 3.0 software. The results showed a significant relationship between the public school principals’ personality and job satisfaction on their affective commitment which is mediated by motivation. In more detail, the results indicated: i) a positive direct effect of personality on affective commitment, personality on motivation, and job satisfaction on the motivation of public school principals; ii) no significant direct effect of job satisfaction on affective commitment; and iii) a mediating role of motivation, that directs to a positive and significant influence on personality, job satisfaction, and principals’ affective commitment. The study’s implications for related authorities are presented.

Abstract

Students’ failure to be successful English learners is primarily due to uninteresting materials that lead to demotivation in learning. This research aimed to uncover the students’ motivation to study in the Indonesian English immersion program (IEIP) of Kampung Inggris Pare and to investigate the innovative methods of teaching speaking as a communicative approach in the IEIP at Kampung Inggris Pare. This qualitative study with a micro-ethnography approach was conducted in four English course institutions by associating ten students and four teachers as participants. By having the initial interviews, the results revealed that most students perceived learning English at formal schools as unsatisfied. In comparison, the two months of observation in “the daffodils, Mr. Bob, Kresna, and Peace” English course institutions found that the teachers taught speaking by integrating the other skills and utilizing some sources. They could regulate and deliver the materials attractively based on their methods. The communicative methods employed namely teaching speaking through writing practice (TSWP), teaching speaking through listening practice (TSLP), and teaching speaking through visual media or pictures (TSVM). This study supports students learning English at the IEIP because it fits the purpose of communicative goals, which directs the students’ success.

Abstract

Currently, there are not many studies on teaching informatics in the direction of developing students’ self-directed learning (SDL) competency. The results of the survey with 235 informatics teachers in 42 provinces/cities across Vietnam showed that although they are very interested in teaching SDL, teachers are still confused about teaching methods and assessments. To improve the effectiveness of informatics teaching as well as develop SDL for students, the study proposed a method of teaching informatics in the direction of designing activities to guide students to create digital products by themselves. The pedagogical experiment on assessing SDL and learning outcomes was conducted on two experimental and control groups, selected from 87 10th grade students, in the first semester of the school year 2022-2023 at Cam Giang High school in Hai Duong, Vietnam. The results of SDL and test scores of the experimental class were higher than that of the control class (with p-value <0.005– this difference is statistically significant). This proves that the method (creating of digital products) is effective, positively affecting students’ learning, helping students develop SDL competency.

Abstract

This study examined the psychometric elements of psychological symptoms, attitudes and coping strategies and the impact of COVID-19 on learning among the university students in Malaysia. The design employed in this study was survey method, that centered on convenience sampling method. A total of 489 students from eight undergraduate program of year 1 to year 4 participated in the study. They enrolled in various disciplines ranging from chemical and food science, medicine, engineering, psychology, communication to religious studies program. Data was analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with all items being grouped within the study’s constructs, which subsequently, were tested using the establishment of measurement model of confirmatory factor analysis. The instrumentation for this study was adapted from Weiner’s Attribution Theory, Expectations and Values Theory. Comparatively, in measuring the students’ coping strategic approach, items were adopted from Greenaway. Additionally, the Counseling Center Assessment of Psychological Symptoms (CCAPS-62) scale was adapted to measure the eight constructs namely anxiety, social anxiety, academic distress, eating anxiety distress, family distress, hostility, and smoking abuse. The Cronbach’s alpha values for all three constructs have indicated the accepted values. Findings revealed that the loading factors for the attitude, coping strategies and psychological constructs are at the accepted values and acceptable composite reliability values. Findings also indicate that the measurement model for the construct attitude, coping strategies and psychological have loading estimates that are statistically significant.
