Abstract

Communication is an essential element of life. It is crucial when it comes to education which is a tool for the welfare of society. People socialize via communication and thus perform desired behaviors. Because of these reasons, preventing communication barriers will provide a more specific field of experience between the sender and the receiver. The study sought to determine the communication barriers among students of Capiz State University, Mambusao Satellite College, Philippines, learning during the pandemic. The study used descriptive and qualitative methods. An in-depth interview using a semi-structured questionnaire was the researcher’s data-gathering instrument. Eight students were the study participants chosen based on the criteria. The study shows that communication between students and teachers has shifted to the digital realm using cell phones and social media. The primary focus of these conversations is module-related matters, and the students initiate the conversation due to module-related problems. Different pedagogical approaches highlight the need to improve communication and effective teaching and learning in the new normal. Despite the pandemic, it is recommended that students and teachers continue to communicate and collaborate. Teachers must also promote creativity in their classes and conduct intervention activities to help students overcome communication barriers.

Abstract

This study measures and compares the digital literacy index between general and vocational high school students. The aim is to determine each student’s ability to understand and implement literacy skills in the digital space. The notes from the findings of this study are then related to the proper implementation of the learning process between the two groups of education levels. This study uses quantitative methods, with the research design as a survey. The population of this research is general and vocational high school students in Medan, Indonesia using a margin of error of 5%. The sampling technique in this study used the quota sampling method proportionally to 400 respondents, with 220 respondents coming from general high school education level and 180 respondents from vocational education level. The results of this study indicate that vocational high school students have a higher digital literacy index than general high school students.

Abstract

Evaluation may be carried out using different tests that are not necessarily parallel. Students with lower abilities may get higher scores while those with higher abilities get lower scores. Measurement errors caused by this condition require test equating. Several computer programs, including Bilog and the R program, can be used for test equating. Each program has a different level of accuracy, and the accuracy of the equating results will affect the standard errors of equating. This study aimed to find out the most accurate equating test method and the accuracy of the estimated BILOG and R program. This research used two sets of tests with equivalent group designs. The determination of the most accurate equating method was based on the root mean square deviation (RMSD) value. Equating test packages, A to package B with BILOG program estimation on the mean and Sigma method resulted in RMSD value of 0.320. In the mean and mean method, RMSD value is 0.250. Meanwhile, equating package A to package B using R program on the mean and sigma resulted in RMSD value of 0.300, and the mean and mean method with the RMSD value is 0.272. The mean and mean yield RMSD values smaller than the mean and sigma methods. Therefore, the mean and mean method is more accurate and applicable. Moreover, the estimation results of the BILOG program are more accurate and can be used in test equating.

Abstract

Based on The Regulation of The Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology No.17 of 2021, cognitive learning outcomes consist of literacy and numeracy as measured through a minimum competency assessment (MCA) with grade 5, 8, and 11. The subjects in this study are 42 students of grade VIII (second grade) from state Junior High School 4 Cirebon and State Junior High School 2 Cirebon, Indonesia. The instruments were tests of numeracy literacy skills, documentation, and interviews. Purposive sampling was used to determine the subject of analysis of test results and interviews. The data were analyzed descriptively through the following stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions drawing. The results showed that the research subjects are still not familiar with numeracy literacy questions which have the characteristics of always being preceded by texts, not understanding what is known and asked in the questions so they tend to blindly guess the answers and needed to be reminded of the prerequisite material. Based on the results of this study, teachers can develop learning media, project-based learning, scaffolding, and teaching materials that accommodate numeracy skills or differentiated learning.

Abstract

Numeracy is the essential skill for life situations that involve mathematical elements and developing students’ numeracy skills is considered a primary goal of mathematics education. Despite its importance, numeracy can be challenging to teach, and it is not a guaranteed result of classroom mathematics learning. Through a systematic literature review, 35 studies about supporting students in becoming numerate in classrooms or courses are explored, this literature review also explained abilities included as numeracy, recommendations for teachers are given as well as some examples was given, also opportunities and directions for further research are identified, including guidelines for enhancing students’ numeracy competence.

Abstract

Statistical literacy is fundamental competence to think critically and to conclude information based on data. This study aims to describe students’ statistical literacy according to gender, grade, and educational field. This research was a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design by explaining and analyzing the results using Rasch modeling, and students’ statistical literacy was categorized and described according to statistical literacy topics, gender, student grade level, and educational field. The respondent of this study was 271 students obtained through the stratified random sampling in Yogyakarta’s senior high school. The result of this study confirmed that the statistical literacy skills of students are still at a low level. The lowest aspect is the scope of conclusions, while the highest aspect is data production (medium level). There are no significant differences in statistical literacy skills based on gender and class. However, there are significant differences in statistical literacy based on field education. It indicates that policymakers or teachers should improve students’ statistical literacy skills by training or applying a learning model that focuses explicitly on statistical literacy skills.

Abstract

Another style of leadership utilized in the field of education, notably digital leadership, has become more prevalent. Studies on digital leadership are receiving more attention, but there has not been much focus on scoping reviews. To determine the constructs of digital leadership, this study undertakes a scoping review. Accordingly, a scoping review on human-influenced and non-human-influenced constructs in measuring digital leadership was carried out in this study. This scoping review follows six processes: i) identification of the research question; ii) literature research; iii) selection of relevant studies; iv) charting the information; v) collating, summarizing, and reporting of study results; vi) discussion of the results and implications for future research. A scoping review was conducted via the Web of Science, Scopus, and Google databases to identify empirical studies on constructs in digital leadership since 2014. Next, the titles and abstracts for selected full-text articles were screened manually. Data from the included articles were charted and summarized. To develop specific and empirical data for measuring digital leadership, the study found that 22 constructs were influenced by humans and three constructs were non-human-influenced. Interpersonal and intrapersonal skills were separated from the constructs that were influenced by humans, with 15 constructs constituting intrapersonal skills and seven constructs constituting interpersonal skills. The results will help identify the crucial components of successful digital leadership. Future research is warranted in creating programs such as workshops, training, and conferences to promote digital leadership and further improve the study.

Abstract

Young adults with enough financial knowledge can commonly make good financial decisions, whereas those who lack financial literacy are always burdened by student loans and credit card debts. Acquiring adequate financial knowledge has become crucial among young adults. The present study investigated the effectiveness of incorporating financial literacy into videos among high school students. The video clips were incorporated into financial literacy in the economics curriculum to engage students and facilitate their learning of financial literacy. This study employed the mixed-methods explanatory design. The data analysis procedures in this design involved collecting the quantitative data, analyzing the data, and using the data to guide the follow-up interviews. A total of 327 students participated in this study. The results showed a significant change in students’ behavior regarding financial literacy (F=271.847, p<.05). Financial literacy should be instilled to students from primary school through tertiary education to ensure long-term sustainability effects.

Abstract

The career readiness model is needed as a reference source for relevant parties, especially universities, to implement various career development and interventions initiatives. This study was conducted to assess the reliability and validity of personality, career efficacy, career readiness skills along with indicators using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling in forming a career readiness model. Results show that each construct achieved good reliability and validity through composite reliability (CR) readings recorded between 0.78 and 0.92 to measure internal consistency reliability, while convergent validity through average variance extracted (AVE) readings exceeded 0.5. The construct of this model had also achieved discriminant validity through the recorded readings of cross loading, Fornell-Larcker and HTMT confidence intervals which did not contain the value of 1. The findings also indicate that career efficacy and career readiness skills are accurate and relevant constructs for developing a career readiness model.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the specifications for developing a problem-based learning e-module for chemical equilibria to increase students’ higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). A qualitative approach with a semi-structured interview involving eight participants from form six teachers in Penang was utilized. The interview results were analyzed using NVivo 12 software by dividing the transcripts into several codes based on a thematic analysis approach. Four broad themes emerged from the need analysis interviews: i) the importance of chemical equilibria; ii) problems in teaching and learning chemical equilibria; iii) teaching strategy; iv) desired improvement. The findings of this study showed that the topic of chemical equilibria in form six syllabus is an important topic for students to master. Still, it is the most challenging concept for both students and teachers. Findings of the interviews also found that teachers need an e-module integrated with problem-based learning due to the lack of teaching resources, the content of the syllabus, and the lack of students’ thinking skills. Besides, teachers suggest variegating the content, strategies, and technology to develop the modules. These findings indicate that teachers are still unsatisfied with the existing teaching materials and strategies and, therefore require an e-module to meet their needs. All themes and codes of the findings are summarized using schematic diagrams. The results of this study are essential in designing and developing the e-module integrated with problem-based learning for the topic of chemical equilibria, which can be implemented and positively increase the HOTS level among form six students.
