Abstract

Meaningful learning through the creation a digital concept map is the easiest way to gain cognitive knowledge, new information, and possibility how to expand among learners. Only a few empirical studies have been conducted in the field of nursing regarding learning through concept mapping to achieve higher levels of knowledge and digital skills. The study evaluated the student’s ability to visualize cognitive knowledge by creating a digital concept map. The objectives were to identify the perception using digital technologies and conceptual mapping, differences and relationships between gender, age, years of study, and branches. We used the ContextMinds program map creation. There were 92 Slovak students of nursing, public health and physiotherapy participated in the study. Data were collected and analyzed using IBM SPSS version 25.0. Perception of learning using digital concept mapping strategy was assessed using descriptive statistics, where paired t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Chi-square were used. The study found a positive perception of creating the digital concept map, but a low level of digital skills. First-year students took one or more weeks to submit the final version of the concept map in comparison to third-year students who took one or more hours. For second-year students, a creation of a concept map was less problematic than for first-year students. Students prefer standard teaching and learning methods. Healthcare absolvents are required to be proficient in digital literacy. Applying cognitive knowledge to create a digital concept map is a challenging strategy procedure.

Abstract

Increasingly diverse learners in today’s classroom might require teachers to implement differentiated instruction (DI) to create an effective learning process. This systematic review provides an overview of how DI was implemented in reading instruction in elementary education. For this purpose, the researchers systematically searched five databases (APA PsycINFO, Education Research Complete, ERIC, Scopus, and Web of Science). Based on the inclusion criteria, 28 empirical studies from 2002 to 2022 were selected for review. To be included in the review, the studies should be empirical, written in English, peer-reviewed, focusing on reading in elementary education, and include students with or without disabilities. The researchers created content coding in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to extract relevant information from the selected studies. The findings indicated that implementing DI in reading instruction to elementary school students includes differentiation in content, process, and product, increased quality and quantity of explicit reading instruction, assessments informed instructions, and integrating DI with other instructional models. This emphasizes that although differentiation might seem complex, it is possible to implement it in reading instruction.

Abstract

This research paper investigates digital literacy components for youths in Bangkok. The first phase used a qualitative method. The key informants were eight experts in information and communication technology (ICT), human resource (HR), and education. The second phase was to develop the measurement of digital literacy components using the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) approach with a sample consisting of 1,362 youths in Bangkok. Data collection was conducted through a questionnaire with 52 questions. The results revealed that digital literacy criteria for youths in Bangkok consisted of four factors containing 13 indicators. The first factor and its related access components was three subcomponents, which are i) use of tools and devices; ii) data collection in the cloud; and iii) internet connection. The second factor was understanding components consisting of evaluation, ethics, and legal literacy. The third factor was use of components consisting of safeguarding, search, sharing, and innovation. The fourth factor was creating components consisting of creating weblogs/applications, presenting on website/application, and safeguarding. CFA was employed to test the construct validity of the research latent variables that revealed the harmony correlation of empirical data contained in this research model. These results were employed to develop a digital literacy for youth during the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangkok, Thailand.

Abstract

With the incursion of data science into the academic field and the massification of social networks, it is possible to extract information on student satisfaction that contributes to feedback on teacher teaching strategies and methods. This article aims to determine student satisfaction with teaching performance, through sentiment analysis. Methodologically, the research is of a non-experimental longitudinal design, with a quantitative approach. Data collection was carried out through the social network Twitter, and data analysis was carried out through the sentiment analysis technique. As a result, it was identified that in the first week of class, the highest level of satisfaction was obtained, reaching 96.3% of the total number of students. Meanwhile, in the evaluation weeks, the highest level of dissatisfaction was reaching 29.17%. It is concluded that when going from totally virtual learning to hybrid learning, students express a certain level of dissatisfaction typical of a process of progressive adaptation. Therefore, teachers should take advantage of these findings to redesign assessment rubrics in the context of hybrid teaching. Aspects such as collecting opinions through social networks and extracting a degree of satisfaction through them apply in a crossed way to other professional fields.

Abstract

Vocational school students are not only required to master competency skills but also cognitive skills. Engineering mechanics learning is a basic calculation lesson that students should master. This research aimed to develop and identify the effectiveness of Android-based virtual laboratory (V-lab) media to improve students’ cognitive skills in learning engineering mechanics at vocational school in Surakarta. The subjects comprised 70 students of first grade vocational school majoring in civil engineering in Surakarta. This research was a research and development (R&D) study to develop an Android-based virtual laboratory media. Testing the N-Gain analysis in the experimental and control classes was to determine the effectiveness of virtual laboratory media in improving students’ cognitive thinking skills. Data were obtained from questionnaires and pretest and post-test test sheets. The developed virtual laboratory media was considered ‘very appropriate’ by media, material, and practitioner experts. The average value of N-Gain for the experimental class was 78.19% which was included in the effective category. Meanwhile, in the control class, the average N-Gain value reached 54.07%, which was included in the less effective category. This indicates that the use of Android-based virtual laboratory media for learning is more effective than conventional learning media.

Abstract

The study was aimed to develop and validate a measurement test to assess mathematical proficiencies in the numbers and algebra strand. A total of 125 seventh-grade learners with diverse learning abilities from secondary educational institutions under the management of the Khon Kaen Educational Service Area 25, Thailand was chosen as respondents. The researchers employed design-based research consisting of four building blocks to construct a prototype utilizing a construct modeling approach. Firstly, the researchers developed construct maps to identify the learners’ mathematical proficiency (MP) level. This was followed by the creation of the items of measurement test according to the proficiency levels. Next, the researchers allocated scoring measures and formed the conversion of learners’ MP stages. Lastly, the researchers validated the superiority of the measurement test through Wright map consuming the multi-dimensional random coefficient multinomial logit model. The construct maps of the MP level consisted of two dimensions, namely mathematical procedures and structure of learning outcome. Findings discovered that there were 20 items in the assessment tool and its quality passed the determined education and psychological assessment criteria. It can be determined that every item is capable to measure the learners’ multi-dimensional mathematical proficiencies.

Abstract

This study aims to validate the psychometric approach (using the Rasch model and confirmatory factor analysis) on the Indonesian version of the statistical anxiety scale (SAS) instrument. Sampling in this study used cluster random sampling with a total sample of 1651 which was divided into three regions of Indonesia (Western Indonesia, Central Indonesia, and Eastern Indonesia) with details of 457 males (27.46%) and 1,194 females (72.54%). The number of samples from the West Indonesia region was 922 people (55.71%), the Central Indonesia region was 605 people (36.76%), and the Eastern Indonesia region was 124 people (7.53%). The results of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) show that the dimensions/elements of the SAS instrument meet the criteria which are then continued using the rating scale model (RSM) approach. From the results of the tests performed, it shows that all items on the SAS instrument meet the specified criteria. Thus, the SAS instrument adopted in the Indonesian context can be used to measure students’ statistical anxiety. The results of the research conducted became the initial capital to increase students’ statistical anxiety considering that statistics courses are needed in completing studies, especially quantitative research.

Abstract

Financial literacy has become an important element in improving the quality of individual, familial, societal, and national well-being. This study aims to find the relationship between parental income and financial literacy level among students at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris. The research employed a quantitative method using a closed-ended questionnaire to collect the data for the analysis. The research sample was selected using a stratified sampling technique and simple random sampling that consists of 366 undergraduate education students. The result indicates that parental income has a weak and significant positive relationship with financial literacy levels among students. Based on the regression analysis, the father’s income explains about 2.76% of the variance in financial literacy, while the mother’s income explains 10.8% of the variance in financial literacy. The results of this study show that parental income has a relationship with student’s financial literacy level. This finding of this study will help to understand more about the factor that can affect financial literacy.

Abstract

This study discusses the development procedure of the global tahfiz game (GTG) as a teaching aid for the Quranic revision subject for tahfiz students based on the gamification concept. Comprehensive design and development research (DDR) was used as the research method. The analysis includes conceptual and material development, expert evaluation, testing, and the final product. The development of concepts and materials used in this gamification was based on the theoretical framework of mechanics, dynamics, and aesthetics (MDA), with the application of tahfiz education elements. To examine the ability of GTG prototype to tackle the users’ needs, we have conducted the usability analysis. The expert teacher's mean score for the trial run on this gamification was high at 4.85. The trial run score for student participants was also high (4.45). The result demonstrated that most of the constructs are perceived at a high level by respondents. Thus, this indicated the high usability of GTG to be used as a teaching aid for a Quranic revision subject. The gamification of Quranic tahfiz based on board games has been finalized through recommendations and improvements based on the evaluation. The study findings are expected to be useful for educational institutions or researchers in developing teaching materials using the MDA framework for gamification, particularly in the field of Islamic education.

Abstract

All students from every level of education should have excellent and adequate creative thinking, but in Indonesia students’ creative thinking is still low. There are a lot of factors that affect creative thinking, such as learning styles. This study aimed to investigate the comparison of students’ creative thinking based on study level and learning styles, gender, and the combination of the three to determine which factor or type of students needs to be improved. This research uses a statistics descriptive method. The participants of this study were 38 senior high school students, 35 students of the teacher professional program (PPG), 24 undergraduate students (S1), and 12 master program students (S2). The instrument used in this study is a learning styles Learning style test to determine the student’s learning styles and creative thinking questions to classify the students. The results of this study are i) Students’ level of study does not determine their creativity level; ii) Based on gender, female is more creative than a man; iii) Based on the learning style, visual students is the best, followed by kinesthetic and auditory in order; and iv) Merdeka curriculum of Indonesia, nowadays, is essential to make the best learning process to improve students’ creative thinking.
