Abstract

This study presents a systematic review of Lean and Six Sigma (LSS) implementation in the maritime sector for the period 2016–2025, encompassing the contexts of ports, shipyards, logistics, the LNG industry, fisheries, and ship design. The analysis reveals a shift in focus from initial case studies to strategic implementation integrated with digital transformation, supply chain resilience, and sustainability. DMAIC and Value Stream Mapping methodologies dominate as the primary framework, supported by the integration of Industry 4.0 technologies and data analytics to maximize process efficiency. Quantitative evidence demonstrates the reduction in process time, reduction in defect rates, and significant operational cost savings. However, the success of LSS implementation is highly influenced by management support, human resource readiness, and the availability of reliable data, with the main obstacles being cultural resistance, limited initial investment, and lack of technical training. This study confirms that the future of LSS in the maritime sector is moving towards a hybrid model that combines Lean, Six Sigma, digitalization, and sustainability principles, which has the potential to become a global best practice in increasing the competitiveness of the maritime industry in an era of competition and uncertainty in the global supply chain.

Abstract

Hiku Tech 3D Pultrusion Machine is a PET filament making machine from PET plastic bottle waste designed by Industrial Engineering students of University of Balikpapan. The machine still needs adjustment in handling the size of PET plastic bottle pieces with different widths. The width of the cut can affect the quality of PET filament and the time of making PET filament, if the cut is too wide or narrow. This study aims to determine the ideal cut width of plastic bottles in PET filament making by looking at the quality of PET filament results and the effect of plastic bottle cut width on PET filament making time. This research uses the method of checking the quality of filament results and the simple linear regression method. The scoring results of the 8mm cut width produced a score of 2 for 23 samples, the 9mm cut width produced a score of 4 for 18 samples, and the 10mm cut width produced a score of 2 for 20 samples. The results of linear regression analysis state that the width of 8mm and 10mm pieces has no positive and significant effect on the time of making PET filaments, while the width of 9mm pieces has a positive and significant effect on the time of making PET filaments. Thus, in the manufacture of PET filaments with cut widths of 8mm, 9mm, and 10mm plastic bottles, it was found that the ideal cut width in the manufacture of PET filaments is a cut width of 9mm.

Abstract

CVRP (Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem) is a problem of route and vehicle capacity in distribution. Based on distribution channels, the authors analyze the fuel costs that must be incurred to distribute the product by considering the distance traveled by each distributor served. On the other hand, vehicle capacity also needs to be taken into account to be able to deliver products according to distributor needs. In this study, the authors optimize the distribution route using the Exact Branch and Bound algorithm method. The goal is to distribute products and costs in one of the MSMEs in North Sumatra, namely Sunny Glass Home Industry. As the name implies, the Branch and Bound algorithm limits the solutions that will produce numbers, then branching decision variables that do not have integer solutions, branching is done continuously until it produces integers and optimal decision variables. Optimization of distribution routes is not only based on distribution mileage, but also on vehicle type, vehicle capacity, and current fuel prices. With various scenarios, the results of this study prove that distribution costs can be minimized up to 72.1% of initial costs with optimal distribution routes.

Abstract

This study was conducted at a pharmaceutical manufacturing company, focusing on the blistering process of capsule products. Quality control issues were identified, particularly defects that do not meet company standards. The objective of this research is to identify the root causes of defects and propose improvements using the Poka Yoke and Kaizen methods. The study is limited to defects found in capsules that have passed the blistering stage, including crushed capsules, dirt contamination, misprinted expiration dates, and empty capsules. The capsules used in the study already meet company standards before processing. The analysis applies the Six Sigma methodology with the DMAIC approach (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control). Results from January 2024 to March 2025 show a DPMO value of 9100.625 and a sigma level of 3.86. The Pareto diagram indicates that the most dominant defects are crushed capsules (35.8%) and dirty capsules (30%). Based on FMEA analysis, the highest RPN values are caused by capsule misalignment in the blister machine (for crushed defects) and powder residue sticking to the sealing area (for dirty defects). Improvements are proposed using Poka Yoke techniques and continuous improvement through Kaizen, specifically applying the 5M and 5S principles.

Abstract

The increasingly intense global competition demands that companies improve product quality in order to remain competitive in the market. At a metal plating and stamping company, a defect rate of 2.29% was identified, which exceeds the established standard by 0.29%. This study aims to identify the types of defects present in the company and their causes, with the goal of providing recommendations to improve production quality—specifically for the stationary contact plate product—using the Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Process Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (PFMEA) methods. Production and defect data were collected from January 2024 to March 2025 and implemented in April 2025 using checksheets, Laney P-charts, and Pareto diagrams to identify the types and frequency of defects. The results revealed three main types of defects: dented, bending, and scratch, with scratch being the most frequent. Further analysis using a fishbone diagram helped identify the root causes of the defects and prioritize corrective actions based on the Risk Priority Number (RPN). The proposed improvements include technical recommendations such as adding foam padding to the output container, reducing the distance between the stamping machine and the output container, and implementing a daily checksheet at the beginning of the production process.
