The results indicated a significant improvement in the average vocabulary score from the pre-test (39.54) to the post-test (65.45). -7.42, with 10 degrees of freedom (df), and the p-value is less than 0.001 (p < 0.001), confirming that the chain spelling game positively impacted students’ vocabulary mastery. The paired sample t-test analysis showed a mean score difference of 33.68, reflecting a substantial improvement in students' scores after the intervention. The standard deviation of (11.57) and the standard error of the mean (3,49) indicate individual differences and the reliability of the results. The 95% confidence interval for the mean difference ranged from (39.54) to (65.45), suggesting the improvement is statistically significant. In conclusion, the chain spelling game proved to be an effective and engaging tool for enhancing vocabulary skills, providing an interactive and enjoyable method for improving students’ language proficiency.

Abstract

The study concentrated on the opinions and experiences of second-year students enrolled in a writing course that emphasizes media literacy. A case study design is appropriate for this research as it allows for an in-depth exploration of the effects of media literacy-based activities on EFL writing skills within a specific context. Questionnaires on media attitudes and how it affects their writing skills were used to collect data. According to the findings, most students thought that the media literacy exercises improved their ability to think critically, comprehend media messages, and communicate effectively in English. The present study thus underscores the need to embed media literacy into the EFL curriculum to enhance critical thinking among learners and to improve their writing competence. Further research is welcome to help refine these pedagogical strategies and resolve contextual challenges for the best learning outcomes.

Abstract

English-speaking ability is an essential skill for EFL students to communicate effectively; however, many students face challenges such as limited vocabulary, lack of motivation, and low self-confidence. Therefore, the study "EFL Students’ Perception in Using Duolingo for Developing Speaking Ability" aims to analyze students' perceptions of using Duolingo to improve their speaking skills, focusing on how the application's features assist in speaking development and its effectiveness in English language learning at senior high schools in the Greater Jakarta area. This research using quantitative method, with data collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire administered to 25% of 187 randomly selected students. The results indicate that students have a positive perception of Duolingo due to features such as a reward system, learning reminders, and game-based multimedia content, which enhance motivation, confidence, learning flexibility, and active participation in speaking. However, challenges such as limited vocabulary and fear of making mistakes still persist, suggesting that while Duolingo is an effective learning tool, its use should be supplemented with conventional teaching methods for optimal improvement in English-speaking skills.

Abstract

Pronunciation is an essential part of the field of communication. However, it can be challenging for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students to pronounce confidently due to several pronunciation problems. To respond to these problems, the researcher aimed to explore EFL students' perspectives on the impact of using ELSA Speak. The researcher first conducted a literature review analysis by observing fifteen articles published in national and international journals. Then, five participants who had taken an Academic Speaking class in batch 2021 or 2022 were interviewed to discuss the results of the literature review analysis and explored participants' personal experiences using ELSA Speak. The data was qualitatively examined and presented as themes. The results showed positive perspectives from the participants when using ELSA Speak, which highlighted four themes included in the findings. At the end of the paper, the researcher presented practical recommendations for the teacher and future researchers regarding using ELSA Speak to learn pronunciation.

Abstract

Academic writing anxiety is a common barrier for undergraduates, particularly during thesis writing, impacting both performance and well-being. While general writing anxiety has been studied, this research focuses specifically on thesis writing. The study aims to identify factors contributing to academic writing anxiety in students and the symptoms they experience. Using a phenomenological qualitative approach, in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 participants from the English Language Education program at the State Islamic Institute of Palangka Raya, all of whom had taken a thesis course. The researcher adapted the SWLAI instrument for data collection and applied content analysis to interpret the results. Findings reveal that factors such as fear, high or low expectations, self-esteem, lack of ability, stress, and communication issues with lecturers contribute to anxiety. Common symptoms include physical disturbances and avoidance behaviors. The results of this research findings are expected to be a consideration for various parties to arrange the best way to prevent or handle anxiety in the implementation of thesis writing as a final project.
