Abstract

English, as an international language, plays a crucial role in various aspects of life, from education to the workplace. This study aimed to explore how eleventh-grade high school students respond to mastering English vocabulary through songs. The research employed a quantitative method, collecting data through questionnaires completed by 21 students. The results indicated that most students responded positively to using songs as a learning medium. It was found that songs not only increased their motivation but also enhanced their concentration and vocabulary skills. These findings support the integration of songs into language learning, making the process more interesting and effective. Additionally, regularly using new vocabulary in daily conversations helps students retain it and avoid forgetting previously learned words. This practice is crucial for ensuring long-term vocabulary retention and overall language proficiency. Integrating songs and encouraging daily use of new words can significantly enhance students' language learning experiences.

Abstract

The purposes of this research are to analyze types of Bald on Record strategies and to investigate factors that influence Aang in the film. The subject of the research is the series of Avatar: The Last Airbender 2024. The researchers used a descriptive qualitative method and the data were analyzed using the theory of Brown and Levinson. This series has 8 episodes. There is a total amount of 30 data obtained by the researchers in Bald on Records strategies and Influencing Factors types. The result for Bald on Records shows that there are 11 Great Urgency, 6 Metaphorical Emphasize, 4 Metaphorical High Valuation, 0 Channel Noise, 2 Task Oriented, 1 Speaker is Powerful, 3 Sympathetic Advice or Warning, 0 Permission That Hearer has Requested, 0 Welcoming, 1 Farewell, and 2 Offer. The types of Influencing Factors, there are 4 Payoffs, 6 Social Distance, 13 Relative Power, and 7 Absolute Rankings of Imposition. The conclusion is that Aang used Great Urgency in Bald on Records more often than others because he faced urgent situations frequently, he used Relative Power in Influencing Factors than others because he is more powerful than other characters.

Abstract

  This research aimed to help students at SMP Negeri 19 Pontianak improve their speaking skills by applying Cooper’s Modified Think Pair Share Technique, the latest modification of the original Think Pair Share Technique, emphasizing student-centered learning. The focus of improving speaking skills was on procedural text material related to water-saving. Students created texts on four randomly assigned topics, which included washing dishes, washing vehicles, washing clothes, and watering plants. The research employed a classroom action research method with 32 students from class 8D at SMP Negeri 19 Pontianak as the participants. The researcher collected data using observation sheets, field notes, and oral assessments. The study was conducted over two cycles. In Cycle I, students had an average score of 66.44, which increased to 71.72 in Cycle II, exceeding the Learning Objective Accomplishment Criteria (KKTP) of 71. This indicates that Cooper's Modified Think Pair Share Technique effectively enhances students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

This research aims to see how a media displays an ideology by framing the discourse of an issue. The data in this study are words and sentences in captions that represent how the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is reported through the Instagram accounts of CNN (@cnn) and Aljazeera (@aljazeeraenglish) news channels. In this research, the author uses qualitative methods to collect and review the findings. The data is analyzed using Critical Discourse Analysis by Van Dijk which includes macro structure, superstructure, and micro structure. Based on the results of the data analysis, it can be concluded that there are differences in the way the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is represented. This shows that each media channel from both @aljazeeraenglish and @cnn on average reflects their respective ideologies by using their views on the conflict to frame an event. In general, it can be seen that the way the @aljazeeraenglish account frames an event is indirectly impartial and uses several words that express criticism regarding the conditions that occur in Palestine. While on the @cnn account, they frame the news directly factually, and optimistically without taking sides.  The use of words in news strongly influences how a media account carries the ideology it wants to convey.

Abstract

One of the requirement of study in an EMI university is the ability to express ideas through academic writing tasks or projects. This explanatory study aims to investigate EMI university students' strategies of using artificial intelligence-based writing assistants for college writing tasks. This mixed-method study combined survey-based instrument and interviews. The survey was distributed online, consisting of 10 likert scale statements, with 1 = strongly disagree and 5 = strongly agree and 5 close-ended questions. This likert-scale statements seek to map students’ use of AI-based writing assistants in stages of writing process while the close-ended questions seek to explain their perceptions of using AI writing assistants. This questionnaire was followed by interviews to several participants, purposively selected based on their responses in the questionnaire. The survey was distributed to 101 university students from 17 study programs at one university that implements EMI. The results revealed that AI tools support EMI students throughout the whole stages of writing processes, but mainly in pre-writing, drafting, and editing stages. Furthermore, students’ positive views over the support and concerns over significant reliance on the use of AI writing assistants are also discussed. Further research could investigate the long-term effects of using these tools on students' academic writing skills and academic performance.

Abstract

This study examines taking the turn strategies within the TV program The Extraordinary Kids: My Brother Doesn’t Share His Girlfriend hosted by Steve Harvey, employing Stenström’s framework of conversation analysis. The researchers use a qualitative research method, the analysis focuses on three primary strategies: starting up, taking over, and interrupting. The findings indicate that starting up is the most frequent strategy, occurring 5 times, showcasing its role in initiating new conversational directions and maintaining the flow of interaction. Taking over occurs 3 times, reflecting moments of conversational dominance or redirection, while interrupting occurs 2 times, highlighting disruptions and shifts in conversational dynamics. This study emphasizes the importance of turn-taking in managing dialogue and maintaining engagement, providing insights into conversational patterns in media contexts. These findings contribute to the broader understanding of discourse analysis and conversational strategies, particularly in structured yet spontaneous interactions on television.

Abstract

This study examines how effectively junior high school students vocabulary proficiency may be enhanced using pictorial dictionaries. Classroom Action Research was used in this research, and carried out in two cycles with phases for planning, action, observation, and reflection. Twenty-five pupils from SMPN 11 Barru's class VIII.3 took part, and pre- and post-tests were used to gather data. Only 32% of students received the minimum passing score, according to the pre-test data. After implementing picture dictionaries in Cycle I, 40% met the standard, demonstrating initial progress. Cycle II involved refining the teaching approach, leading to a significant improvement, with 100% of students meeting the minimum standard and the average score rising from 66.6 to 80. The findings highlight the potential of picture dictionaries in fostering vocabulary retention and engagement by providing visual and contextualized learning experiences. These results support the integration of picture dictionaries into vocabulary instruction as a practical and effective tool. Future research could explore the use of digital and augmented reality picture dictionaries to enhance learning outcomes further and address limitations related to abstract concepts.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using short story media to improve students' vocabulary. With a pre-experimental using a single group pretest-posttest, the researcher employed quantitative research. The sample for this study consisted of 25 students’ from class VIII2 at UPTD SMPN 11 Barru. Purposive sampling was the method utilized to choose the study's sample. Following the exam, the researcher discovered that the students' average pretest score was 55.68 and their average posttest score was 69.6. The data was then evaluated using the t-test formula. With t-count = 9.14 and t-table = 2.068, the data analysis findings demonstrated that the t-count was greater than the t-table at a significance level of 0.05. It may be said that using short tales as a teaching tool greatly increases students' vocabularies.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the vocabulary and pronunciation skills of seventh-grade English learners at UPTD SMPN 2 Barru by implementing a project-based learning (PjBL) model. Utilizing the Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach, this research unfolds over two cycles, where each cycle includes the phases of planning, execution, observation, and reflective analysis. Data collection involved tests, projects, and observational assessments to gauge student learning outcomes. The findings revealed a notable improvement in the average scores of students, rising from 62.92 in the initial cycle to 80.83 in the subsequent cycle. Furthermore, the proportion of students meeting completion criteria increased from 41.67% in the first cycle to 83.33% in the second cycle. Additionally, there was a marked enhancement in student participation, with learners demonstrating greater activity and confidence when presenting their work to the class. These outcomes suggest that the PjBL approach is effective in fostering student comprehension and engagement in English language learning. This study corroborates earlier research highlighting the advantages of PjBL, particularly in enhancing student motivation, collaboration, and academic performance. Consequently, it is recommended that strategies for implementing PjBL be meticulously crafted to optimize learning potential, cultivate a more conducive learning environment, and elevate students' academic success.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the drill method in improving speaking skills among 7th-grade students at SMPN 33 Barru, particularly in the context of self-introduction. The research employed a pretest-posttest design with a pre-experimental approach, involving 22 students. The results showed a significant increase in the students' overall average score, from 60 in the pre-test to 84.7 in the post-test, reflecting substantial improvement in their speaking ability. Improvements were also observed across all assessed aspects: Information (59.5 to 86.3), Grammar (59.3 to 82.2), Pronunciation (58 to 82.2), Fluency (58.8 to 82.2), and Confidence (64.3 to 86.3). These findings suggest that the drill method is effective in enhancing various speaking skills, including accuracy, fluency, and student confidence. Therefore, the drill method can be a beneficial teaching approach to improve English speaking skills, particularly for beginners.
