Data obtained from observation, interviews and documentation. The subjects of this study were second semester students of the English study program at IAIN Palangka Raya. Then, the object of this research is learning strategies and also factors that contribute in increasing the vocabulary used by English students. They were selected by purposive sampling technique. Interviews were used to determine learning strategies and contributing factors in increasing students' vocabulary. The findings of this study indicate the following points: (1) students use strategies to increase vocabulary, especially during the Pandemic. The strategies include: direct strategies, namely memory strategies, cognitive strategies and compensation strategies. While the indirect strategies are metacognitive, affective strategies and social strategies. Although there are several strategies in learning, here the informants only use cognitive, memory, and metacognitive strategies. Each student has a different strategy that is tailored to their own desires. This strategy is very helpful for students because they can adapt it to their preferred way of learning. (2) in increasing students' vocabulary, there are also contributing factors. The chosen factor is also the same as choosing a learning strategy, because this factor also has a role that is almost the same as the strategy. These factors are usually used when they are studying, namely when they have free time so that even though they are relaxed, they can still get vocabulary.

Abstract

Listening comprehension is a critical skill in EFL education, yet it often receives less attention than other language skills. Traditional listening materials frequently fail to reflect real-world language use, limiting their effectiveness in developing learners’ listening proficiency. Despite the recognized benefits of authentic listening materials, there is limited research on students' perceptions of their effectiveness in improving listening skills. This study aims to investigate the perceptions of MA Hidayatul Insan students regarding the use of authentic listening materials. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through a structured questionnaire completed by 100 students and interviews with five participants. The findings reveal that students perceive authentic materials as engaging and beneficial for improving listening skills, vocabulary, and understanding of native speakers. However, challenges such as the difficulty level of the materials and lack of familiarity with native speech patterns were noted. The study concludes that incorporating authentic materials can enhance listening proficiency, emphasizing the need for tailored strategies to address these challenges.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the strategies used by English teachers to enhance students' critical thinking skills in reading at MTsN 1 Kota Palangka Raya, an Islamic junior high school in Central Kalimantan. A descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design was employed to gain an in-depth understanding of teaching practices within a real classroom context. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that teachers employed various strategies such as interactive read-alouds, divergent questioning, the SQ3R method, group discussions, and project-based learning. These strategies were often integrated with Islamic values like honesty, responsibility, and deliberation. Despite facing challenges such as students’ low vocabulary and reluctance to express opinions, teachers addressed these through scaffolding, gradual questioning, and differentiated tasks. The study highlights the importance of culturally responsive teaching strategies that align with Islamic values and suggests practical ways to foster critical thinking in madrasah settings.

Abstract

This study compares the Dayak Ngaju and Bakumpai languages from a historical linguistic perspective to reveal their kinship and phonetic changes that occur. Although they come from the same language family, these two languages show phonological differences due to social, cultural, and contact influences with Banjar Malay and Indonesian. This poses a threat to the sustainability of the Bakumpai language. This study uses a comparative historical linguistic approach with lexicostatistical analysis to measure the level of kinship between the Dayak Ngaju and Bakumpai languages. The data used is basic Swadesh vocabulary consisting of 200 words. In addition, phonetic changes such as apheresis, apocope, and syncope are analysed to identify phonetic change patterns in both languages. The analysis results show that the level of kinship between the Dayak Ngaju and Bakumpai languages reaches 80.5%, indicating the closeness of the two in one language family. Phonetic changes, such as initial (afteresis) and final (apocope) sound deletion, are found in both languages, reflecting phonological evolution influenced by social and cultural factors. This study concludes that despite phonetic differences, the Dayak Ngaju and Bakumpai languages still share significant similarities, indicating a strong kinship. These findings reinforce the importance of preserving the endangered Bakumpai language and contribute to local Kalimantan culture's linguistic understanding and preservation.
