Abstract

This research is motivated by the low level of students' understanding of the material on functions. This study aims to identify and analyze the learning obstacles faced by eight-grade MTs students in understanding the function material. The method used is qualitative research with a hermeneutic phenomological approach.. Data were collected through tests, questionnaires, and in-depth interviews. The results indicate three main categories of learning obstacle; ontogenic obstacles (psychological, isntrumental, and conceptual), didactic obstacles and epistemilogical obstacles. The findings also reveal that the primary problems students face are a lack of basic conceptual understanding, low learning motivation , and difficulties in applying knowledge to situations or problem types different from those usually taught by the teacher.. The novelty of this study lies in the use of a hermeneutic phenomological approach to deeply explore the experiences and meanings of learning ostacles from the students’ perspective, as well as categories: ontogenic, didactic, and epistemological. This research contributes to an in-depth analysis of students' learning experiences through a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, as well as recommendations for contextual learning strategies, the use of visual-interactive media, and individual guidance to address student learning barriers.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether learning through a scientific approach will improve students' mathematical critical thinking skills. Mixed method is the method used in this study, using Parallel Convegent Design. All eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 21 Bandung city served as the population in this study. Two classes were randomly selected, where class VIII-A was the experimental class and class VIII-G was the control class. A mathematical critical thinking test was given, consisting of five questions aligned with the indicators according to these abilities. The t-test results showed a difference between the posttest scores of the experimental class and the control class, with a significance level of 0.000 <0.05, which means that the use of a scientific approach assisted by Quizlet helped improve students' critical thinking skills. In addition, the questionnaire showed a very positive response to this approach, especially regarding student activity, learning interest, and motivation. Thus, the use of a scientific approach with Quizlet can make students more active, interested, motivated, and better understand mathematical concepts.

Abstract

Students’ algebraic thinking ability remains relatively low, while differences in Field Independent (FI) and Field Dependent (FD) cognitive styles have not been extensively examined in the context of solving systems of linear equations in three variables at the senior high school level. This study aims to analyze students’ algebraic thinking characteristics in terms of FI and FD cognitive styles when solving problems involving systems of linear equations in three variables. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving two students, each representing FI and FD cognitive styles. Data were collected through an algebraic thinking test and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed based on indicators of modeling, generalization, abstraction, dynamic thinking, analytical thinking, and organization. The findings indicate that FI students tend to be more analytical and independent, demonstrating strong abilities in abstraction and generalization as well as efficient problem-solving strategies. In contrast, FD students exhibit more contextual and procedural thinking patterns, relying on external structures and visual representations. These findings underscore the importance of adaptive algebra instruction that accommodates students’ cognitive style differences, while also providing conceptual and pedagogical contributions to the design of adaptive algebra learning based on cognitive style variation.

Abstract

The high level of students’ errors in solving problems on exponents and logarithms indicates the presence of conceptual difficulties that need to be analyzed systematically. This study aims to analyze high school students’ errors on exponents and logarithms. The research was conducted on tenth-grade students at a senior high school in Bandung, involving 20 students, from which 6 samples were randomly selected. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The research instrument consisted of validated exponent and logarithm problems. The results showed that, based on the percentage of students’ errors in solving mathematical problems according to Watson’s error categories, inapproriate procedure errors were classified as high, reaching 48%. Omitted data errors were categorized as low at 14%, and response level conflict errors were also categorized as low at 10%. Skill hierarchy errors were classified as very low at 5%. Errors outside the seven categories were categorized as low at 24%. Meanwhile, incorrect data errors, omitted conclusion errors, amd undirected manipulation errors were not found (0%), thus falling into the very low category.
