Abstract

Introduction: Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori) is one of normal human microbiota live in human stomach and often associated with dyspepsia, however, its association with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is still controversial. The diagnosis of H. pylori is often established through histopathological examination, an invasive urease tests, and urea breath test (UBT. Serological tests are also used to diagnose H. pylori, one of which is Stool Antigen Test (SAT), which is cheaper, non-invasive and easier to operate. The purpose of this study was to detect H. pylori antigen in GERD and non-GERD patients at Atma Jaya Hospital.Method: This study was a descriptive cross-sectional. Participants in this study were adult patients hospitalised in Atma Jaya Hospital from August 2018 - November 2018, interviewed with GERDQ questionnaire and stool samples were collected. Stool Antigen Test was carried out using SAT from Biocare®. Results: Thirty participants were included in this study, consisted of 22 women and 8 men, and predominated by adult age group (35–64 years old). Forty percent participants were GERD group consisted of 75% women. Positive SAT test results in the GERD group was 16.67%, non-GERD was 11.11%, and negative SAT test results in the GERD group was 91.67%, non-GERD was 77.78%. Conclusion: The presence of H. pylori antigen was detected in women in the adult age group. It seemed the presence of H. pylori was not different from GERD group and non-GERD group.

Abstract

Background: Metal pollution increases along with increasing industrial development. Exposure to copper in large quantities can cause kidney and liver damage. Curcuma zedoaria has benefits as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferation, anticancer, and antimicrobial. Curcumin which contained in white turmeric rhizomes in previous studies was used as a nephroprotective variation. Objective: This study is used to know wether white turmeric rhizome (Curcuma zedoaria had a nephroprotective effect with exposure to CuSO4 pentahydrate. Methods: This is an experimental study by designing post test only control group design. The sampling is using simple random sampling technique. Male white wistar rats are divided into six groups; normal control, control of white turmeric (45 mg / 200 g), control of CuSO4 pentahydrate, and co-treatment group (curcumin for 14 days followed by CuSO4 for 5 days). Results: Data were analyzed using One Way test. For group 4 (preventive group) serum urea creatinine level was not different from group 1 and 2 (p greater than 0.05) with mild histological structure damage. However, differences were obtained (p less than 0.05) in Groups 3, 5, and 6. Conclusion: The dose of 45 mg / 200 g white turmeric extract showed a percentage decrease in serum creatinine urea level and mild histological damage to kidney tissue.

Abstract

Introduction: Heart disease and stroke are the top two causes of death in the world that are associated with high cholesterol and blood glucose level due to the wrong diet. Objective: The objective of this study is to prove the effect of vikâla bhojana (Buddhist fasting) on triglyceride and fasting plasma glucose levels on Theravâda monks community in Medan city. Method: The research method used is quasi experimental design with non equivalent control group. A purposive sampling technique with inclusion criteria has been applied to respondents, which consisted of 18 monks and 18 laypeople. Anthropometric measurements and biochemical blood analysis are used to collect data. Statistical analysis is performed by using a single sample t-test, unpaired t-test, and Pearson Product Moment. Result: The research statistic shows the value of p=0,006 (p < 0,05), indicating there is a significant difference between the mean of triglyceride and fasting plasma glucose level among groups. Conclusion: Although the main purpose of vikâla bhojana (Buddhist fasting) is to attain self-control, vikâla bhojana (Buddhist fasting) can reduce triglyceride and fasting plasma glucose level.

Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of Kinesiotaping (KT) and quadriceps muscle strengthening exercises on muscle activity of Rectus Femoris (RF), Vastus Medial Oblique (VMO) and Vastus Lateral (VL), pain intensity, and functional status of patients with knee OA.Method: This study used a double blind randomized controlled trial design. Twenty-six women with knee OA were randomly divided into treatment and control groups. The treatment group was given KT on three quadriceps muscles and quadriceps strengthening exercise, the control group received “sham taping” and quadriceps strengthening exercise. Measured muscle activity with surface electromyography (sEMG), Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and Aggregated Locomotor Function (ALF) scale before and after treatment 4, 6, and 8 weeks.Result: There were significant difference in rectus femoris (RF) muscle activity (p = 0.033) between the treatment and control groups at week 8 but there were no significant differences (p greater than 0.05) between group for the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscle activiy, NRS and ALF at weeks 4,6 and 8.Conclusion: KT plus quadriceps strengthening exercise does not offer advantages for improvement of pain, functional status, VMO and VL muscle activity compared with “sham” taping plus quadriceps strengthening in knee OA, other than an improvement of RF muscle activity.

Abstract

Background: Placenta percreta is a life-threatening condition that requires multidisciplinary management. The incidence of placenta percreta increases with increasing incidence of cesarean section. Antenatal diagnosis is an important point to prevent morbidity and mortality in both mother and baby. Ultrasonography (USG) is one of the relatively cheaper and easier modalities for diagnosing placenta percreta. Objective: To identify the optimal ultrasonographic criteria for the diagnosis of placenta percreta. Methods: We followed 2 cases, which performed antenatal care (ANC). Both patients then performed an ultrasound examination according to the placenta accrete index (PAI) method. The ultrasound assessment findings are then compared with intraoperative clinical findings and histological features. Results: From two cases, we did not find any Bizarre lacuna, but a thin retroplacental myometrial layer was found accompanied by loss of clear zone. The findings on ultrasonography are in accordance with intraoperative findings and histological features, where the appearance of the placenta percreta is clearly visible. Conclusion: It is different from the assessment of PAI, where the presence of lacuna is the biggest predictive factor for placenta adhesiva, in both cases, a thin myometrial layer of retroplacenta accompanied by a clear clear zone, although no lacuna was found, sufficiently describe the placenta percreta

Abstract

Graves ophthalmopathy (GO) is the most common extrathyroid manifestation of Graves’ disease. More than 50% of Graves’ patients will experience it, even 10% of them will suffer severe GO. The mechanism of GO is associated with complex autoimmune reaction and suspected to be associated with an imbalance levels of antioxidants and oxidants in the body. Smoking and poor control of Graves’ disease also trigger the progression of ophthalmopathy.Selenium is one of the most abundant antioxidant components in the thyroid gland. Selenium can help overcome mild GO by correcting the imbalance between oxidant and antioxidant levels in the body. Nevertheless, selenium cannot be given carelessly because improper dosing can lead to the several types of cancer as well as type 2 diabetes mellitus.
